Helton: Pruitt can stand toe to toe with any offensive coach: a great football mind

They and every one else know who they are. Some of them wouldn't have a positive thought if one hit them in the head. LOL

this is simply rewriting history to back your viewpoint.

Alabama had just had a coach that never made it the practice field. Even the UT admins haven't screwed the pooch that badly on any hire.

2006 4 players drafted, rounds drafted 2,2,3,5
2007 3 players drafted, rounds drafted 4,7,7
2008 0 players drafetd, rounds drafted
2009 3 players drafted, rounds drafted 1,3,3

No, just a different take on what happened. You use the data to support your viewpoint and I see it slightly different. Sometimes there is a "Paul Harvey" to the story that is deeper than just the quick review of stats.

UA was down, that's for sure, but I just don't think it was as bad as the team CJP had to work w/ this year. It will be another year to prove , but Saban probably inherited more upperclassmen who ended up in the NFL than Pruitt will....your info plus the UDFAs that ended up in the league for more than a year are enough to confirm this.

Shula wasn't the greatest....I don't think he was an absolute trainwreck either; he inherited the real mess, may have been too young and green at that point in his career to handle. Franchione put the dagger in UA....putting them on sanctions and bolting. Shula's second to last year UA was # 8... you don't just stumble into that IMO. Over 3 of his 4 years his teams were fairly competitive.....numerous key injuries during a couple of those seasons didn't help the effort, and his inability to beat AU sealed his fate.

Of course, I'm not a UA fan....so my view on the Shula years probably doesn't mirror theirs.

Their records were abysmal most of the 10 years prior to Saban getting there with 2 10 win seasons in there but they were a few years apart.

There were very few positives about that program at the time. So what did their administration do? Hired a guy who had a proven successful track record in college.

UT's program was, according to you, worse than what Saban inherited and what did our folks do? Look for every up and comer they could. Leach was the only proven commodity that we seriously attmepted to land and of course the powers that be squashed that plan quickly.

While I hope CJP is the guy, at this point there is zero real life date that indicates he will be. And i see no reason to pretend otherwise.

Saban was their second choice.....Rich Rod told them no first.

I suppose anyone skeptical is automatically a "Pruitt hater".
Agreed. I like a lot of what Pruitt is doing. I am Critical at times,, mostly of players. Pruitt is building UT back to what it is expected to be. It isn't going to be a fast build. A big step has been made, with this year's recruiting. He also showed us, a little of what he is looking for, on both sides of the ball, strategically. An offense, that lives and dies in the trenches. Run the ball, against ANY DEFENSE. Possess the football. Win the Time of Possession war. Win the kicking game. Set up play action. Throw over the top. Move the chains. Attack on defense. Confuse QB's, cause turnovers. Sound familiar? Old UT football/Bama ball. He needs an OC with a strategy that compliments the defense.

While Rodriquez almost certainly would not have had the success Saban has had, he was a proven commodity as a head coach not a coordinator that they hoped could be a successful head coach. And when they had to drop to their 2nd choice...did they go oh well no one good wants to come here? Nope, they went the other direction and got an NFL HC.

But spin it any way you want to. Their administration was serious about winning and serious about putting their program back to where it had been previously. I can't say that would be true in Knoxville.

Have to agree with your last sentence....so maybe you mistake the intent of my post. I'm not taking up for Pruitt....he's a grown man and can do that himself. There were plenty of WTF moments this year. I just don't think you can state uniquivically that UA was in worse shape when Saban was hired.

I haven’t spun anything. What I said was fact. Saban was their 2nd choice. And what exactly do you have against Pruitt? I’m not a coach worshiper nor have I ever said he was the absolute best coach we could have hired. I do believe he will be a very good head coach though. Just like the previous bunch of coaches we’ve had, he deserves time to right the ship. I will support him until he gives me a reason or reasons not to.

The only thing I have against Pruiit is that he is learning on the job. That should never happen at UT.

I know, I know, ADPF blah blah blah, his staff want a bunch of rookies when he was. His talent level was at an all time high at that point.

I support him just like I've supported everyone of his predecessors. Unless you mean by supporting him one must claim how great of a job he has done or is doing..Because at this point, outside of the most recent recruiting news, he has only been average at best. Pretending there are obvious signs that he is going to be a good head coach isnt something I'm going to do.

I guess I saw a little more out of Pruitt this year than you did. That doesn’t make my opinion right and yours wrong. We just have different opinions of the man right now. I choose to be a bit more positive. However we both want the same thing at the end of the day and that’s for Tennessee to compete for championships again soon. GBO!
