I mean, justifiably so though.

To me the recruiting issues are much more worrisome. Can’t keep kicking the can down the road - at some point you have to out-recruit what the results on the field justify.
Let’s let the class finish first. We don’t know how it ends and we are still in on top players like Wright, Henry To, Robinson, and Cain. He’s gonna land Gray and we lead for Wright. If he lands those guys I’d argue that, in spite of the rankings, it’s better than any class the intern signed. So let’s let it play out first

Gus has a bit more standing as a experienced head coach. Lots of unknowns at this point with Pruitt. Also, we know what happens at Auburn.
I love this “we know what happens at Auburn” or any other school line that gets dropped when we are getting beat on the recruiting trail.

Let me go ahead and assure you, we’re cheating just as heavily as every other SEC school. That’s not the reason we aren’t getting these guys.

Except beat two ranked teams in year one with one of the worst rosters in the SEC, one of those wins being an SEC west team on the road, something intern Jones never did. If I’m not mistaking, Pruitt needs one win over a ranked team to equal the interns total in his 5 years here.

Not to mention he’s been a championship coordinator which is more than anything the intern has on his resume
I didn’t say he hasn’t done anything Butch didn’t do, just that he hasn’t clearly differentiated himself. Butch beat a higher-ranked team than Pruitt did, recruited far better, and didn’t get routinely humiliated his first year (a couple of times but not with the same frequency).

Pruitt beat an additional one more ranked team and also won a road game against the SEC West. To this point that’s all he’s really got on Jones. Don’t see the separation from where I’m sitting. Maybe it happens. Maybe it doesn’t. But it hasn’t happened yet. Again, JMO.

I can’t believe some fans are frustrated after 10 years of sucking and getting beat by 25 against Vandergriff. Gmafb

The coach worshipping fan shamers are the worst. Keep being blindly optimistic if you want, but there’s nothing wrong with pointing out flaws and showing concern after year 1.

Nothing wrong with it, its just easy.

Not unfairly, in my view. Pruitt hasn’t done anything to demonstrate he’s clearly better than the last guy.
chicken or egg? he's taking the last guys left overs. it's hardly fair to compare the two given the last guy had 5 years, and what was year 5, and would have been year 6, they'd have a total of 9 wins between the two seasons....that's what hte last guy did.

that's not a function of running a good program, as evidenced by the fact he got fired, and this guy was brought in to fix it.

and i'd say 1 year with less than half a recruiting cycle on the current roster isn't exactly the fairest way to judge what he has, or hasn't done relative to what the last guy did.

I disagree with every point you made here. But that’s fine, he has to prove still he’s a head coach but I’d take him 100 times out of 100 over Jones

Still a long way to go, but that finish probably still puts us around 10th in the country. That’s good - but certainly not great.

I’m not going to hold Pruitt to the Butch standard. Hold him to the standard of the top of the SEC.

You are naive if you don't think opposing coaches are using this against us with offensive players, defensive players, even other candidates for the offensive coordinators job. This is a cut throat business and other coaches use whatever they can to place doubt in a recruit' s mind. Stability is a huge factor for any recruit and if you can portray a shaky situation at a place you're recruiting against, it huge factor. That's why it's crucial for coach Pruitt show improvement next year. If he doesn't opposing coaches will be breaking out the hot seat talk.

Malzahn is literally on a hot seat and they are still recruiting with the best of them. Doubt negative recruiting is really hurting them.

10th isn’t great? I mean, I want to be number 1, but 10th with the top two tackles in the country and several other top players is a great class.

Yeah, there are all kinds of excuses and caveats we can offer for why this year or that year didn’t go as well as it could have. All I’m saying is we have absolutely no reason to think Pruitt will be any better than Jones except for wishcasting.

And I’m not saying he won’t be better than Jones or that he’s going to fail. I’m just saying I’ve seen nothing to suggest he’ll be any better yet. Maybe he will. Maybe he won’t. We need more data.

I am in favor of giving him 5 years regardless of what happens.

No, I don’t think it’s great. 10-15 is a pretty average class by Tennessee standards. At his prime, Fulmer was pulling top 5 classes every year.

That’s how you build a real contending team.

Auburn takes it to a different level. Cam's dad got a new church. Do you not find it the least bit strange that Pappoe does a complete 180 10 min after the Auburn coaches leave? I know we cheat, Auburn just cheats better.

Agreed but I believe you have to start somewhere. If Gus doesn’t perform next year we could easily be in the top 5 for 2020. Especially with Bailey on board.

Let me preface by saying that, although I am generally an optimist, missing a bowl because we laid down vs Missouri and Vandy and recent misses on the recruiting front aren’t a good look. But I don’t think things are nearly as bad as they’re being made out to be on the coaching search. Based on reported facts vs rumors it seems to have gone like this...

Round 1: Hugh Freeze is it. I think information came to light about Freeze and UT elected to pass. The fact that the dirtiest program in the country, Auburn, also took a pass tells me we probably made the right choice.

Round 2: Briles, Lebby, and Yurcich. Briles has a lot of strikes against him: black eye from scandal, no playbook, and gonna have to let him bring a couple of guys to get him away from an already sweet deal in Houston. There’s probably even more considering FSU hasn’t hired him yet. Pruitt and co. likely decided he’s not worth the trouble. Lebby not qualified. The ball is in Yurcich’s court, if he turns us then it’s on to round 3.

Looking at all this, I don’t think a bunch of people have told Pruitt no. I think we passed on one, couldn’t meet the demands of another, and are waiting on word from Yursich. Maybe he was offered Monday and given 48 hours to decide, who knows?

I think it’s apparent from the candidate list that has gone public that Pruitt is looking to go with an up tempo spread type offense, which may be out of his element and why a lot of more traditional pro style guys that seem to have obvious connnections may not have even been approached. I do find it very hard to believe that we would be going around interviewing guys just for fun if we’ve had our guy in the bag or even 95% in the bag.
I think what we are missing as fans is that he is doing personality interviews as much as scheme. Don't think scheme is biggest factor. Per Hubbs and LaVol.

I think you are too focused on one recruit. It’s going to happen time to time.

Fulmer was also fielding top 5 football teams in the fall.

The 2 are directly correlated

Coach Doug Mathews came on the Midday 180 last Wednesday and said the OC hire was 95% done. Does he come on the Midday 180 every Wednesday? I'm interested to hear his take today if so.
