Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

Look, Hubbs has even argued that the majority of the guys Butch recruited were fools gold. There’s a reason we landed a bunch of these guys that were 4 stars on Rivals, but had no legitimate SEC offers. Butch was trying to keep the fans happy by keeping the class rankings high, and did an excellent job of it. The dude was selling snake oil. Yeah, he hit on couple, even a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally.
This is very true

Most of the defense on the "playoff rosters" was the same for the 4-8 season last year. The only reason that team was ever considered playoff-caliber was because Butch beat out Arizona St. for Dobbs, Missouri for Barnett, and Vanderbilt for Reeves-Maybin. It's not like he was going head-to-head with Saban getting the recruits he wanted after his first year.

In fact, Wanya would be above anyone in Butch's first full class.

Barnett could have gone to many places. Don't let him narrowing it down to Missouri and UT fool you. Ohio State was in until the end as well.

Obviously, we lost several key players from the 2016 defense. Losing the first (or second) best pass rusher in school history is kind of a big deal.

Every other staff in the country has to deal with the same timeframes.

Yep. And they all have hard decisions too. And they don't have years of experience dealing with this timing issue either. The original statement was that our coaches were struggling with timing. You implied that our staff was deficient because they were struggling. I thought that was a misguided notion, but if you want to stick to it, knock yourself out.

I'm of the opinion that Butch recruited some really talented players, but he didn't coach them up to play meaningful football. Talent shone through in many situations, like Dobbs/Kamara making something out of nothing time and again. But you've got to be able to develop that talent, something I don't believe Butch did anywhere close to well enough (and ultimately why he got fired).

Thanks. I’m comfortable with my assessment.

The only Argument imo that holds water in regards to butchs recruiting is that he had a lot of help with legacy guys.

Disagree.
I have to say in all honesty, I thought Pruitt and his staff would recruit better than this. We are missing on our priority targets for ESD. Maybe things will shift in February for us, but nothing that’s happening right now is any indication of that.

This is all I’m saying.

Step it up, Jeremy.

Look what Pruitt was selling then compared to now. At nationally established programs (FSU, Georgia, ALABAMA) it was probably a lot easier to bring in the dudes than it is coming off back to back losing seasons. Perhaps he’s struggling managing the pitch/visit scheduling.

I believe in Pruitts coaching abilities and the relationships he has with people. I think the best is yet to come recruiting wise. There’s some definite growing pains going on here because of where the state of the program is.

Summary of how most of us feel:

Butch did fine recruiting, he had help with legacy but he underachieved with the 2016 class, to say the least. Pruitt had impressive wins against Auburn and Kentucky this year with Butch's 2017 class and a few gems he recruited. We still had the same record, though.

We'll know more after we see the class he signs (hoping it would be top ten, but right now, it doesn't look like we are going to get that) and the new offensive coordinator he hires. We are homers and want to see the best in everything, but all these years of disappointment have just made us very skeptical.

Hope so. I believe he’ll develop guys so there’s that. But I don’t want to be SC. I want to be competing with Ga and Bama. Can’t do that unless we land the jimmies and Joes

We have more points in the 247 composite right now with 20 commits than we finished with in both 2017 and 2018. If we can finish with Wright and Gray, the rest of the class is just a bonus.

To be honest, we should be happy to get a top 10-15 class considering we haven't won an SEC title in a decade and have been under .500 for two years straight. Go 7-5 or 8-4 next year, and watch the show.

We won't win big in the next couple of years regardless. Just need to make progress. If he has to finish this class with 3 stars, then do it. Then, develop them and win 7 games next year. When you show progress, recruiting will come around.

And to say that Barnes hasn't won anything yet is why our fans get a bad rap sometimes. He won an SEC regular season title. Only won team wins the national title, and UT has never been there. It is incredible what Barnes has done.
I really like Barnes and thought the hire was great. I’m not being unrealistic I’m just saying he hasn’t really won anything. I fully
Expect him to have us in the tournament each yeah and I am more than happy
With that.

I’m just saying these people using a big win yesterday in basketball to justify settling for 3 stars as a good thing are going to be severely dissapointed when we are struggling for bowl eligibility again next year.

And Khafre Brown.

To be honest, it was clear Butch would take the guys early and deal with it later if a higher rated guy wanted in. It's a tough deal, but it's probably best for the school.
I think since Pruitt joined the college ranks, he's always been at a big time program where he could afford to slow play recruits. They would always jump on last minute if he came up short with his first option.

He may just now be learning that you can't take a recruits interest for granted.

That, or he doesn't care and is willing to take that risk. It does make me feel good that he's being honest and up-front with these kids. It would also make me feel good to win, though. So... I'm torn.

They are definitely real criticisms of Pruitt so far if you look at it objectively. Recruiting has been a tad of a let down although i think he brought in some good players similar to how Dooley did his first class.

But he also allowed his team to completely quit the last two games of the year.

He’s also already hired one OC that didn’t work and he ran him off (for right or wrong) and it’s rumored that weinke is looking to leave already and that he hasn’t meshed/been able to hire another OC easily.

So there are some question marks already but that does mean that Pruitt won’t be successful here. He’s just got some learning to do.
