I don't think knowing what timing of visits is the problem. Beating out Bama and UGA on getting the timing you want is a problem but most kids will pick them first right now. Also having so many needs and so little numbers is effecting do you take a guy early down list some or swing for the fence. Imo that is the issue not "figuring out timing" it's getting the timing you want and making numbers work

No reason we shouldn’t have locked down a guy like Joseph Anderson though. In state kid at a huge position of need and obviously he’s now “a take”, but it’s too late.

To everyone complaining about the staff closing recruiting battles, let's just wait and see how we close once we have a winning record. This staff may be great at recruiting, but they aren't miracle workers. All Saban or Smart has to do is point to the last three years of records and smile. Our guys have to sell hypotheticals, a tradition of excellence (which probably looks like a ghost to someone who wasn't alive when we won the Natty), and playing time. I'm convinced that playing time is overrated when it comes to recruits because all of these recruits 3 stars and above have been the man their entire lives. They think they are good enough to start from day one, 5 star roster be damned. Can't really explain why Bama loads up 5 stars 3 deep at the same position each year if playing time is such a premium for attracting recruits.

Butch Jones did it.

Jeremy Pruitt should too.

No excuses.

We wont win big with 3 stars, and to be frank Barnes hasn’t won anything yet at tennnessee. I’ll be the first to admit how much I like Barnes being our coach, yesterdays win felt incredible... but it’s december... the rule is typically recruit elite and win elite. There are really not any exceptions to this rule.

We won't win big in the next couple of years regardless. Just need to make progress. If he has to finish this class with 3 stars, then do it. Then, develop them and win 7 games next year. When you show progress, recruiting will come around.

And to say that Barnes hasn't won anything yet is why our fans get a bad rap sometimes. He won an SEC regular season title. Only won team wins the national title, and UT has never been there. It is incredible what Barnes has done.

Yeah but the issue we are discussing doesn’t have anything to do with what the staff is selling, but rather how to manage the timing.

If we can’t manage the timing to get the talent we need to actually achieve a winning record, the staff’s ability then will be moot.

Did he though? How many of those 4 stars did he compete with Ga and Bama for? They may have been 4 stars, but most of them were the overrated guys nobody else was after that he knew he could get easy. There were some, but those were few. Just look at the play of the tean

247 Consensus 4-stars
Josh Malone
Jalen Hurd
Todd Kelly
Dillon Bates
Dewayne Hendrix
Derrell Scott
Von Pearson
Cortez McDowell
Daniel Helm
Derek Barnett
Dontavius Blair
D'Andre Payne
Gavin Bryant
Chris Weatherd
Evan Berry
Charles Mosley

Malone/Hurd/Barnett were really good players. Kelly/Pearson/Berry were decent role guys. The rest did nothing.

Butch got a dream scenerio with legacies, and a lot of his top rated guys crashed.
A bit of a false narrative. The backbone of his best teams were not legacies. Dobbs, Kamara, Hurd, Barnett, Malone, Sutton.

A lot of them were instate however.

Yep, and pruitt said there were only 2 guys on the roster that he recruited for GA or Bama. They may have been four stars but when we’re competing against nobody for them, that’s a sign. Then we can see what happened when they got here

And Khafre Brown.

To be honest, it was clear Butch would take the guys early and deal with it later if a higher rated guy wanted in. It's a tough deal, but it's probably best for the school.

BJ also enjoyed the benefit of apparent success at Cincy and CMU. Pruitt had no record as a head coach, and unfortunately last season's mix of hits and misses didn't make it clear. It may just take the longer cycle of 1) recruit where you can, 2) develop and improve, 3) then recruit better, 4) repeat. The bottom line is that if he can get a team to play above their ranking, the wins will come and recruiting will improve. If he can't...well let's just hope he can.

Which legacies worked out here?

Butch built a playoff roster for 2015 and 2016. He couldn’t continue to recruit at that level because the jig was up about his coaching abilities. He was a great recruiter and should get credit for those rosters. He just sucked at everything else
