Just spitballing here...

When the media questions UT on the apparent "hypocrisy" between not hiring Schiano yet hiring KB, wouldn't Pruitt, Fulmer or even the current UT President simply respond, "guys, I don't know what to tell you. We weren't around then and we had zero part in the decision-making process at that time."
That would be classier than my proposal:

"You mean the guy that is about to lose his job?"

crazy how a few weeks ago folks and media saying we could have a chance at landing a top 5 class... now we are looking to try and stay in the top 10... what happened overall? How did our momentum with these kids stall? Were we simply the flavor of the month and the excitement is gone, or did the way we finish the season have something to do with it? Some on here say how we finished has nothing to do with recruiting, yet we laid eggs at the end and now we are sliding in the wrong direction with some kids... still time to reel them back in though...
nothing has really changed except with Pappoe reconfirming his committment to Auburn. everything else is the same.
and really, nothing changed with Pappoe. he was and is still committed to Auburn.

i get the optics of it, and certainly my confidence in flipping him have changed...but it was going to be a flip.

structurally, nothing has changed to the class.

Also, a run down of some of the names we've been looking at. Team talent (247 composite) vs offensive efficiency rankings (SOS-adjusted)

Freeze
2015 - Talent (19) Offense (2)
2016 - Talent (15) Offense (27)
Average - Talent (17) Offense (14.5) +2.5

Enos
2015 - Talent (25) Offense (1)
2016 - Talent (27) Offense (38)
2017 - Talent (22) Offense (48)
Average - Talent (24.67) Offense (29) -4.33

Briles
2015 - Talent (31) Offense (10)
2016 - Talent (40) Offense (52)
2017 - Talent (73) Offense (22)
2018 - Talent (51) Offense (26)
Average - Talent (48.75) Offense (27.5) +21.25

Yurcich
2015 - Talent (33) Offense (21)
2016 - Talent (39) Offense (14)
2017 - Talent (38) Offense (2)
2018 - Talent (37) Offense (14)
Average - Talent (36.75) Offense (12.75) +24

Basically, if we somehow land Briles or Yurcich, we're gonna have many reasons to be excited.

Final thoughts on Hugh Freeze...

Multiple reports have former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze taking the head coaching job at Liberty over multiple offensive coordinator opportunities at Power 5 programs.

How much was Tennessee one of those programs?

Well, Freeze never had a formal offer from the Vols, per our sources. We believe Freeze and Jeremy Pruitt spoke last week and there was mutual interest on both sides, but it never got nearly as far down the road as many had suggested and it certainly didn't get to a point where it was blocked by the administration. As we indicated multiple times, a lot of this was Freeze wanting to see what other opportunities he would have.

I spoke with some very good sources this morning who flat-out told me a lot of what was reported on Freeze was entirely false. The specific claims that the powers that be at Tennessee quashed a Freeze hire and that there was a press conference being set up were "complete BS," per those sources.

If Pruitt had hired any OC in the middle of the week, chances are that guy is going straight on the road recruiting instead of to a press conference. It took Tennessee two months last season to officially announce his first complete coaching staff when he had all but a couple of spots sewn up basically by the time he was hired.

You might suggest it's easy to have that info floated out after Freeze goes elsewhere ... but it's consistent with what we heard and relayed to you guys here. If Freeze wanted Tennessee and Tennessee wanted Freeze and those were the only two factors at play (they weren't), then it probably gets done, and likewise if Tennessee wasn't going to let Pruitt hire Freeze because of his baggage, that would have gotten out, too. There were other layers and factors involved.

All along Freeze was waiting for other opportunities to come open and playing the field a little bit. Alabama was the one some very involved in Tennessee's search thought Freeze would get after the Tide tried to get him on as an analyst last year. And yes I do think it's telling Freeze wound up not in the SEC.

And if you're wondering why this is coming out now, it's not uncommon for people to become more willing to talk when a search ends or someone is hired.

Quality post, way to bring it to the board man, ty

Well, there’s another hit to Harralson, Brice, and Wallace’s already flimsy reputation. Fake news media for sure

Because those 3 need a reason for why they were wrong. Booster involvement is easy excuse and can't be verified. 247 nevertheless reported anything on Freeze which should have been a sign. So I'd trust them for spilling the truth. Also VQ said similar this morning so they bit the bullet there unlike the others. Brice will never admit wrong

This is the kind of BS we'll just have to expect.
yep. siap, briles has baggage. much like freeze. the difference being he was never fired, and has been hired twice since then. the information out htere on briles, some if it is not very good, but the majority of it is "according to reports..." type stuff, aside from the title ix law suit he's named in.

bottom line, there's enough smoke that it will require some serious vetting (and i think that's either been done, or is being done) once again.

it'll bring the ire of the media because it's TN and the Schiano fiasco. we'll be called hypocrites. and in some ways we are. at least some of us. i never put much stock in to the Penn St stuff with him. it was 3rd part heresay that his name was even brought up.

Schian was a beyond terrible choice for this job. the PSU cloud, if you can call it that, was just baggage. many of our fans misconstrued and used that as a reason to justify not wanting him. and maybe rightfully so, i don't know that he WASN'T involved in that stuff.

i do know he was an terrible choice and a bad football coach that had enough baggage from his time in the NFL to warrant skepticism.

as for Briles, much better coach. really what we need offensively speaking. just have to decide are we willing to go thru the PR mess?

i dont' think being scared of bad PR should be a reason not to hire him, especially if you've done your homework and are confident in what you've found in the vetting process. cause at the end of the day, if members of the media have an axe to grind, it's not like they're going to pay attention to any relevant facts to do so. the majority of their audiences are going to be ignorant of any real details and the name "briles" and "baylor rape scandal" will be enough to generate the reaction they want.

lss, the media is going to do what it's going to do, regardless of how well we did at vetting him, and regardless of what facts may be out there to support Kendall's actual involvement in what happened at Baylor.

if he's your guy, hire him. we start winning and he gives no reason to be questioned further, it'll wind up being a great redemption story.
