Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

I think the most important factor in the selection of an OC is hiring a guy that isn't ambitious about moving up. We need consistency. It's really the foundation for almost all successful programs. I like Chaney because of that because we know he isn't trying to be a head coach. Sark might fit this description too, but I'm not as high on him. He's wasted Matt Ryan and Julio Jones. The difference between Kyle Shanahan and Sark when you look at the Falcons is night and day. I'd love for Maurer or Shrout to have the same guy working with them every day for the next 3-4 years.

My second factor is QB development. I know a lot of us were high on Freeze because of his recruiting capabilities, but there are not a whole lot of OCs that are great recruiters. I think we can still recruit really effectively without having a great pitch man at that staff position, especially since our head coach is a damn dog of a recruiter himself.

So why would anywhere not include the place that he could call home?

I think it would be great to bring Tee in to let him prove himself. If he earned it, then he could be promoted to OC when the time comes. Otherwise, it's a no for me.

Coach Friend is one of the BEST Oline coaches, not just in the College ranks but in football period.

There’s a reason why he’s paid what he’s paid, and gets the respect he gets across the country.

You can disagree and have your own opinion but to disrespect the mans coaching prowess and to not see him as one of the best is just WRONG.

The man knows his craft and knows it well.

He had one of the smallest Olines, just not in Power 5 but in Division 1 PERIOD. Dealt with Multiple injuries, lack of a Strength coach, bringing in a new blocking scheme, playing walk ons, his best player was lost to Blood Clots, playing kids that weren’t ready physically, I can go on and on.

He's clearly not one of the best. A ton of excuses here. Line was bad, maybe even worse than last year. No excuse there.

Quite the opposite. We have some of the best in the business in Knoxville. VFL Films & Vol Network are the best at what they do. Pruitt and several on this staff are absolutely elite football minds. Barnes is one of the best. Vitello is as bright a baseball mind as you'll find. Things are not nearly as bad on the hill as they seem right now.

Good points. Barnes is great. We have some great minds and coaches surrounded by some of the worst admin. Hoping that changes.

Nobody could have made that shjt show work this yr with 200 lb lineman and unfortunate injuries etc. cast your ballot then when there is something to work with. Till then just relax and enjoy the ride.

I’m a candidate????

Boys we are playing for FGs.

1st and 10... Punt it. They’ll never see it coming
You do realize that even if your strategy worked, 25% of VolNation would still second-guess you?

"I know Volatil has got us off to a 7-0 start, but this smoke and mirrors crap is going to catch up with us in the playoffs...he's unwilling to make adjustments and look at all the talent he's wasting. Yeah, we're doing okay for now but I guarantee you it is in our best interests to get rid of him sooner as opposed to later. I don't know about you, but if you think I'm going to keep donating $10 each year, you're a bigger idiot than he is."

Basilio is hell-bent on the story that Pruitt wanted Freeze and Fulmer blocked it and now Pruitt is going around talking to big $$$ boosters around the state and telling them that Fulmer is blocking him. If true, it's just a matter of time until Pruitt walks to the next stepping stone.

Not buying it.

Edit:
Not buying the Pruitt talking to boosters part.

FWIW, scheme and play calling did the OL no favors at times. Seemed like we some schemes in our run game that were just asking too much of the guys we had to work with a lot of times. The few times we seemed to try to scheme around the OL and not ask too much of them (notably, USCe), they didn’t look terrible.

Hard to know whether that was a Helton thing or a Friend thing, though.

Hard to see Basilio making something like this up, IMO. He has so much to lose. Where will he go if he loses his credibility and has to sell the van down by the river he broadcasts from/lives in?
