The Men that Killed UT Football

Are you kidding? You have to include Fulmer on this list. He started UT’s decline. He completely lost control of the program.

I'd put the folks who ran him off the way they did at the top of the list. You don't treat a man who won the national championship that way and have any credibility nationally. We should have handled Fulmer the way FSU handled Bowden. A gentle nudge out the door over time, not a swift kick in the rear. Hamilton caved to people like you and THAT is the reason we suck now.

FSU won another national championship within three years of Bowden leaving. The best UT has done since 2008 is piss away a trip to the SECC in 2016, at which bammer would have embarassed us anyway.

How FSU did it is the right way...how we did it is the wrong way.

We lost credibility and became a joke. Remember the Fulmer Cup? Losing at home to Wyoming? The program had gone off the rails. He let it get that way.

Fulmer jumped at the AD position first chance he had. He has had no other public offers. That tells you how attached he is to Tennessee, for good and bad.

He. Was. Never. Going. To. Quit. Voluntarily.

Should he have been fired when he was? That is a good topic of debate and I see arguments on both sides. But Fulmer was NEVER going to give up that honeypot job. JMHO, of course.

Yes. I remember losing to Wyoming. THE WEEK FULMER WAS FIRED!!! And yes, we lost BECAUSE he was fired.

Remember the joke of a press conference with Fulmer in tears? How effing stupid was Hamilton to set that up?

Remember the players walking out of the presser in protest? Do you really think it was a coincidence we lost to Wyoming?

How interesting that you bring up the Wyoming loss, which was CAUSED BY Fulmers's firing, not the cause of it. He was already fired at that point.

You are a case study in why we suck now. Impatient and yes, uninformed fans running off a national championship coach.

Interesting you didn't even address my reference to FSU. They handled it right and won another NC. We handled it wrong.

As bad as Hamilton was, his worst trait was caving in to folks like you. It was cowardly. He gave Fulmer a big extension and raise in March 2008. He should at least have been man enough to go down with the ship.

I don't disagree, but back in 2008 we thought this program was a quick fit and didn't have the patience to wait another couple of years for Fulmer to ride off in the sunset.

Lol. Add me to the list

IMO the Haslams didn't decide "Let's torpedo UT football" and then orchestrate a carefully conceived plan to accomplish same.

Rather, "Big Jim" et al felt that given their level of $$ contribution and prestige they were not just fans, they were The Owners. And, as The Owners, they began to micromanage. UT Admin went along with it, hence a major contribution to the downward spiral.

"Big Jim" once stated publicly that he didn't want UT to be known as "a mercenary football school, like Alabama" but instead to be known as "an academic school that also plays football, like Virginia." Also, The Owners reportedly had a long time love of Schiano thus his attempted hire at UT -- and we all see what a great choice that was and how well it worked out for UT. Kind of like all the great choices that The Owners have made for the Cleveland Browns, making them the NFL dynasty that they are.
To be fair, Bill Belicheck recommenced Schiano too for other NFL coaching jobs. We probably would’ve been fine with him had the Penn a state thing not happened.

Fulmer set the wheels in motion. He’s always acted like the job was his birthright and he has a small army of butthurt fans who think the same thing

When Spurrier left Florida in 2001 Fulmer was handed the keys to the SEC and he ran it into the ditch. Zero SEC championships.

Fulmer became a very average coach when Spurrier, Meyer, and Saban showed up.

Let me finish reading Tom Mattingly and Celina Summers new book about last years search.

She summarized it on the radio though. They interviewed both Big Jim and Jimmy. It was clear Big Jim had no involvement in the last search.

HOWEVER, Jimmy showed up to the interview with a canned statement from his lawyers explaining he had no involvement. Jimmy then proceeded to rattle off 6 or 7 things that showed his direct involvement of attempting to get Schiano. He basically buries himself with his own words.

Now I’m paraphrasing from memory here:

The telling point is when he calls Currie to congratulate him on hiring Schiano.

Currie replies “It’s not finished yet.” And Jimmy gets mad and asks why not.

Currie replies “The fans are burning dumpsters around the stadium.”

Jimmy says, “You can’t kowtow to the masses/simpletons” or something to that effect.

He thinks he knows more than everyone. It’s why we’re here and why the Browns have had 6 coaches in 6 years.
I actually believe Haslam when he said that he merely suggest Schiano and wasn’t pushing him. If Haslam was so hung up on Schiano he would’ve hired him as the Browns coach instead of Hugh Jackson in my opinion.

I’m not saying that I like the haslams, but I do think the whole Haslam was trying to sanatorium is by pushing Schiano was way over blown

They tried to hire him at Cleveland and pretty much everyone there told them they would quit if he was hired.

The micromanagement of UT by the Haslam family killed UT athletics.

Ed Oregeron i hate worse. That guy was using our phones after they took the USC job telling the early enrollee recruits to turn around dont arrive on campus or that starts the use of their eligibility. Brandon Willis comes to mind who was enroute and got the call from Orgeron on the University of Tennessee issued phone and Willis turned around over the mountain between North Carolina and Knoxville. Granted Orgeron wasnt alone im sure Kiffin told him to call the recruits they wanted. However at least use your own cell. How dirty to negative recruit a school with their own phone.
Can't like this post enough. It wouldn't bother me to see Orgeron run over by a truck.

EXACTLY!! I was at that Wyoming game. Clearly what happened.
I also remember talking with a handful of Wyoming people downtown on Gay Street and Market Square after the game. They were utterly stunned -- not only at winning the game but that we had fired the coach earlier that week. We were absolutely laughingstocks.

The thing I remember about Keith Jackson was his faux-retirement love fest taking over the 4th quarter of the Fiesta Bowl.

That, and his love of Al-----aaaaa-----BAMA!!!! Which I think contributed to his showboating.....anything to take the attention away from our NC.

Records indicate that Schiano was the only coach contacted by Currie. Seems odd don’t you think? Either Currie went full retard by only contacting one single coach, or he was following directions.

The only other coaching contact was Leach reaching out to Currie because he wanted the job.

It all started with the elevation of Hamilton to Director of Men's Athletics. Hamilton was a great fundraiser, but he had no qualifications for the AD job. Funds, programs, the university's reputation - all took a nose dive during his tenure. "Hurricane" Hamilton devastated Tennessee athletics. 2003, a year that will live in infamy...

Imagine if UT had chosen to unify men's and women's athletics under Joan Cronan in 2003. Imagine the candidates who would have wanted to follow her in the job. Imagine the last 15 years of Tennessee athletics being filled with achievements and accolades. Imagine athletes in all sports yearning to wear the orange & white, praying to receive an offer from UT.
