"I think the Hugh Freeze stuff has some legs"

Sankey maybe able to stop this hire if we try to go this route.

SEC Bylaws concerning Hiring Practices that requires schools to get the commissioner’s blessing for any candidates with a “major infraction” on their record:

In addition, where a member institution considers hiring an individual who has engaged in unethical conduct as defined under NCAA Bylaws or who has participated in activity that resulted, or may result, in a Level I, Level II or major infraction, the President or Chancellor of that member institution is expected to consult directly with the Commissioner prior to offering employment to the individual.

Sankey and the conference do not have veto power over such a hire though. That's what is strange about that rule. The school wanting to hire such a coach is required to make a case to Sankey, but he can't stop it. He can disapprove, encourage the school not to make the hire (like he did with Saban last year), etc., but he cannot prevent it from happening.

It would be great to get him. Before the season started I met him after a round of golf. He stopped in Birmingham to visit with a guy in our group that started 4 years at Ole Miss. He was on his way to Auburn to move his daughter in and visit with Gus. So who knows. Would be a great get.

I’d love to land Freeze but what in recent history has shown that UT goes after big name hires or shops anywhere other than the bargain bin for coaches?

Now here’s hoping we actually care about winning again and get this guy. I already got some crow defrosting just in case. :)

You’re an idiot to think a HC is going to willingly leave to be an OC
Dan Enos and Joe Moorhead did that, off the top of my head. I am sure that others have done that. It is more money in a Power 5 Conference and a foot in the door.
You getting hung up on titles...instead of opportunity.

He certainly can. But that doesn’t mean he’s going to do that

Here's the full quote from Simonton.

"I do think that the Hugh Freeze stuff has some legs, talking to some people. There was interest a year ago when Pruitt was initially making his inaugural staff for Tennessee, with Hugh Freeze. That obviously did not happen and they went with Tyson Helton. I think there's some mutual interest there. There's gonna be some hurdles, though, to make that happen. One is the SEC and two, I think, is some folks in Tennessee's administration."

Is there a difference here than with Bruce Pearl?
