This vitriol toward Helton has taken focus off the defense, which gave up 88 points to Mizzou and Vandy. We lost those games by 58 points. The Vols didn't do well on offense or defense. And defense had the experienced players-- four SR starters on the DL and three of our best JRs in Bituli, DTaylor and Warrior. Big picture-- there's plenty of blame to go around.
Defense is gonna be fine

Thanks for reminding us that everyone sucked and failed

And today?
Pruitt/Dave & Busters: “Get job?”
Helton/Dairy Queen pay phone: “Yeppers!”
Pruitt/Dave & Busters bathroom stall: “Aight...cool.”
Helton/Cricket wireless phone: “Laters!”

Next move for Helton, do not pay out $800 k...do not go home to Knoxville

Good chats all around. 😎
It's either in his contract or it's not. None of us know. It's 100% speculation at this point. No use arguing over it, unless you just enjoy arguing.

Have we all cooled on Matt Canada?

Current Maryland interim but I’m guessing they’ll look elsewhere and he’ll be looking for a new job

My concern with Freeze would be it would be very short term.
I thought the same thing. Although I would think it would be slightly longer than Kiffin. I would say Kiffin would be a 2 year type thing. Where as Freeze could be a 3-5 year stint.

I'm sold on Osovet but one caviat...JG cannot run RPO's. No way in hell.

We ran plenty this year. Seemed like he handled it at times. We never really committed to it as if it was our identity though.

I think this was a big learning year for JG. He took some big steps from 2017 to 2018 as a passer. Hopefully he can continue improving into next year. His oline made things really really tough on him every single week. But the dude is tough as nails.

If we get some big improvements on the oline, I feel pretty good about him running whatever offense we throw at him. He did a good job taking care of the ball for the most part. He's at worst a solid game manager. But he's still young and could be the starter for 2 more years potentially. If he gets some protection he might start picking teams apart.

And if not, then bring on one of them youngsters that can.

But if we run RPO stuff we're gonna need an experienced QB that can make the right reads consistently. He's gonna be that guy for sure. Hopefully we groom somebody better to eventually come up behind him. But I would prepare for Guarantano if I were you.

Agree, but... the offense didn’t help the D out much, and Lock and Shurmur are both good QBs who had some of their better games against us (in Shurmur’s case, almost certainly the best game of his career). (And by good games, I mean perfect throws even when the coverage was there.)

I agree-- the offense was a huge problem. Trying to execute Pruitt's power run offense without the essential personnel wasn't going to work. We only had one RB who could catch the edge and he was playing hurt. But the Vols had issues on both sides of the ball.

I'm not going to bog down all the sexy OC talk with the various points of your post I disagree with. Just saying that Osovet's offense is a bad match for JG.

Simonton keeps throwing around that Pruitt will just reshuffle his staff...I think that is the case....but I wouldnt put Friend as OC....rather see what Osovet could do.

My wishlist....
1. Kingsbury
2. Freeze
3. McClendon

Or promote Osovet

I agree (as I’ve said). We’re not likely to make him pay it because it seems like Pruitt was probably ready to move on and this is the best possible way (in terms of optics) for that to happen, so UT would want to do everything possible to facilitate WKU hiring Helton.
Wouldn’t have mattered if he’d smashed it here. No HC wants his name associated with keeping an assistant away from advancing...optics schmoptics.

For JGs development i think he needs some stability with all the offensive staff changes he's had to deal with. I think Friend would bring that, and his offense at Colorado St put up pretty big numbers.

He's not a sexy hire, but with some staff shulffing they could promote Osovet to an on field role to lock him down.

That was Mike Bobo's offense not Friend
