There will be hot boards everywhere (including one here) but I don't think anything is going to happen quickly with this OC search.
Hugh Freeze is a candidate and there's mutual interest there, but folks in Tennessee's administration and SEC would have to green-light the move to make it happen.
I've been texted Josh Niblett's name a couple times. I don't see it with the Hoover HC. But Niblett does have strong connections to Pruitt. Freddie Kitchens also has ties to Pruitt but the Browns new OC has called plays for all of 3-4 games in his entire career. He was a college position coach until 2005 when he moved on the NFL to be a position coach (mostly RBs) until Hue Jackson and Todd Haley were fired.
Dan Enos is an interesting name. He's developed Tua well this year and has experience calling plays in the SEC.
Finally, I wouldn't rule out Tennessee simply making a few promotions from within, starting with Will Friend. There's a couple different avenues to take there, but John Lilly and Joe Osovet are options to be made on-field staffers. Those moves would likely dictate changing roles for Brian Niedermeyer and Chris Weinke. Just something else to consider.
Would be an excellent hire IMO. Lots of good options out there
Are you aware if Helton had language in his contract to eliminate the buyout for a upward move?
Helton is leaving on his own. How is that deflecting anything. Pruitt has said a number of times he is ultimately responsible and has to get better so we can get better. So it begins. Deflect responsibility to the OC, deflect responsibility to the O-Line coach, deflect responsibility to the players. Not a good look either.
“Reported” by LAVol...That was off the “1/3 of their remaining” blanket language that included Sherrer, Friend and Fitz...you saying they all have the same exact contract? That was “reported” as part of their standard contract but it doesn’t include leaving to be HC...never does. It’s a protection against them making a lateral move. Call it an “exception” if you wish when there’s no buyout “reported”. I still can’t reconcile this thinking that you’re more likely to lock in someone you threw money at to pry them away because they were in LESS demand.
I was just curious. Thanks.I've only seen the MOU. The legal teams for both parties have boilerplate clauses that they insert and each side agrees to strike certain clauses during negotiation. The executed contract could include a clause waiving the buyout if Helton accepted a HC position at another institution within a specified amount of time. Legal likes to strike such clauses when there is leverage to do so, but UT made a lot of concessions last year. I could call and find out, but it doesn't matter-- given the circumstances, UT will likely waive any applicable buyout.
