I think it’s pronably likely that most assistant coaches would not owe a buyout if they take a promotion (however that is defined) at a non-competitive school, but when you offer a first-time playcaller $3.6M guaranteed, it’s not your normal situation and there’s a much stronger argument that he should be locked down.
