Sounds like Helton is out. Props to @HankHill for calling it like a month ago.

Here are some replacement ideas, just connecting some dots:

Promote Will Friend to playcaller, hire a QB coach. Tee Martin (it that staff is fired) and Doug Nussmeier come to mind.

Hire an outside offensive coordinator: Nussmeier and McElwain have both coached with Pruitt at Alabama. Maybe go after Freeze if the SEC allows. Fulmer has coached with him before. We tried to hire both Enos and Locksley before they decided on Alabama last season - maybe go after one of them again?

We’re going to hire someone explicitly committed to the pro style, game managing, power run system Alabama has historically run. Helton could not or would not fully commit to it.

I’d feel pretty good about McElwain or Enos as OC. Nussmeier or Martin, not so much. Feel pretty neutral about Friend as OC.

If Pruitt doesn’t get the offense right, it won’t matter how well he’s recruiting or how good the defense is, he won’t work out. Has to nail the OC hire

Just don’t understand that. Freeze beat Bama twice even if he did cheat for the players. I do agree that Freeze did not really scheme the running game all that well. But you get the best.

Agreed. Our offense is very much like Floridas before Mullen. Itll take 3 years or so to get the defense right but i believe he can do it.

Welp...I like Pruitt, and I think he has qualities that could make him a great HC...BUT...his mulligan season is over..if he ever loses to that trash program again..I will be leading the Fahr Pruitt bandwagon.

Tonight, I finally realize why I have hung around the recruiting forum for so many years. It's the hope of the future of UT football. If we don't have the coaches, we could at least hang our hope on the incoming talent. I will continue to hope in our future VFLs that decide to join our wonderful university. Demand more from yourself, from your coaches, and UT will return soon to the top of the SEC East. GBO!

I’m old school and at first didn't mind Helton’s playcalling but I gotta say he’s very predictable. I said earlier it’s silly to judge him with THIS OL. But an elite OC should manufacture more than he did. He’s not elite we need elite. He was only marginally better than Larry Scott.

It was rumored last year Pruitt wanted to hire freeze and the SEC put the hiatus on it.
