Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

Just want to interject into the whatever he/she said troll flow this AM to say the difference in 5-7, 6-6, 7-5 is not as much about the extra practices and playing in a toilet bowl. It's about developing a roster that seeks first to compete hard and win. That's what CJP's "straining" is all about. You win or lose with every single play. So the players have to be mentally tough and focus such that they highly value every single play. Many on this current roster don't and those guys need flushed out. CJP has been telling the world this in his own words everyday.

Winning begets winning and the better players tend to be like JJ, who hates to lose more than they love to win. Those guys will battle past the whistle to prove they are better at anything than the opponent. Which is why everybody I know loves the guy and were thrilled for him to be reinstated. So going 6-6 or better matters because the team will be straining to win another game and in practices. More players will either figure that out or be flushed in the off season. It also helps this coaching staff gel a bit more as they finish the recruiting class and plan for next season. More data points - more knowledge. It's the same in football as it is in most other occupations and industries.

Carry on...

Great post.

Just thought I'd stop in here and check on things. Yikes.

I just trawled through ten pages hoping for a recruiting update, and came away thinking this thread is one MJ/Lebron debate away from opening the last seal in Revelations to start the end of days.

I've just started skipping to the end when there's 15-20 pages from my last visit. I can generally get an update with 1-2 posts...one such as yours! 😂

Well, this is the football talk thread. Recruiting updates should be in the recruits' individual threads.

What happened on Saturday doesn't faze me one bit on JP. Y'all can sit here and argue incessantly with Chief and whoever else over bullshiz, but this is the first coach since late 90's/early 2000's era Fulmer that I truly believe has a handle on how things need to go for this program to have success, long term.

He's a football coach. He's not a marketer. He's not a charmer in press conferences. He's not the flashy, trendy hire. He's straight up X's and O's, coach 'em up, develop the program, get the **** outta my way kind of coach.

This team has gotten better week-in-week-out. Saturday was a speed bump, nothing more.

Aight?

Now...go back to arguing with fools.

I don’t care about opposing fans or the media’s perception of our season vs. expectations. The only people’s opinions not currently invested in the program I care about are recruits. I’d say the difference to them is real, although I’m sure it’s a matter of degree.
i dind't say you should.

i'm just saying that any consternation you have about this season, the future or the perecepiton of the program is self driven. it's not being forced on you by outside influence. you do it to yourself. this narrative that if we dont' do this or that, then it is going to be detrimental to the program, just isn't true, except int he minds of some Tennessee fans. conversely, beating VAndy and going to a bowl doesn't mean we're going to do great things either.

lss........we're not very good this year. and there's really not much difference in what happens after this season, no matter what happens SAturday.

want to win...yep. think we need to...yep. hate losing to vandy....again.......double yep.

does anyone deserve to be fired if we do? nope. does it mean the future is lost? nope. does it mean we wont' finish the 2019 cycle on a good note? nope.

like i said, it's the need that some have to decide the fate of the program on a weekly basis that jsut doesn't make any sense.

after the FL game, "we're going 3-9" after the Auburn game "i can see 8-4".

laughable the overreacting that goes on here.

Gotta agree with Bruin here.

I hate that it's so cut-and-dried/black-and-white. Something like judging the success of a season is always filled with ups and downs, and I don't really like giving a grade until the results have been written. But this is about as clear a test as it gets.

I just hope that if we go 5-7 it doesn't mean a chunk of the fanbase folds on this staff. Just because a first-time HC doesn't round out his first year in the best fashion doesn't automatically qualify him as a failure. Nor does it mean we throw all continuity to the wind and fire a coordinator.

I think a chunk will fold on him if he goes 5-7, but that's just the nature of today's industry. I strongly agree with the fact that this program needs stability, so I hope there is minimal turnover in terms of the entire football staff (including S&C, etc.).

What I do want to emphasize is that I think this is Pruitt's first "must win" situation as UT's head coach. I could sit here and list a bunch of reasons why it's important to win this game, but at the end of the day, how will our coach perform in a "must win" situation? I think that is very important.

Ok, so if it’s self driven, why are people so quick to call those that don’t align with their evaluations “foolish” or “idiot?” Really seems to be coming from only one side of the debate.

on that angle, i do agree...as part of the maturation process of the program....definitely agree.

i think you're reading what you want to then...there's plenty already on both sides of it....and it's all self driven.

i'll put it this way...i dont think you 've seen enough of anything to say he's going to be great or that he's going to be a failure.

those that have arleady kinda picked their side of the fence will be able to give you reasons why, either way. and you can already see some of that.

and then there's just the folkks that get their jollies by riling everyone up.....

Again, not seeing where anyone here has said Pruitt shouldn’t be given that much time aside from your friendly neighborhood straw man.
Over-generalizing on your part and you seriously haven’t heard ANY artificial deadlines on this board? You been hangin with the Dalai Lama or some seclusion shizz?

Maybe I’m not taking notes as well as you (I can totally see you having a ledger somewhere) but no, haven’t seen anything putting an artificial deadline on anything before 2020. I’ll keep an eye out, I promise.

So there are 9 bowl spots open with 19 teams sitting at 5 wins.

3 games of 5 win teams matched up including UT
Make that 6 spots

Very good chance there are 2-3 5 win teams who get in, maybe more.

There are 6 teams with a higher APR than UT so if anyone is thinking about a bowl at 5 wins it’s not possible.

Bored this morning and sad I even wanted to look it up. Bottom line just win. Vandy can go bowling if they lose most likely since they are 3rd in APR but who gives a ****.

Of course not. He hasn’t even had a full Recruiting cycle. And again, the debate last night really only touched this season. I think it’s fair to say the season was a failure and his first year was a success if we don’t make a bowl but pull a top ten class. I’m not asking it to be decreed from the top of Ayres Hall. I’m not advocating for ANY staff turnover. If that’s my opinion alone, I’m fine with it. But I’ll put it out there and discuss it.
