Kiffin didn't beat a ranked UGA team in '09. UGA was 3-2 entering that game. They had been ranked #18 2 weeks prior to the UT game, but had lost to LSU the week prior to UT and had fallen out of the top 25 (and finished the regular season 7-5). It was a good win for Kiffin/UT because it was a rival and first year Kiffin defeated the veteran Richt, but it was not a signature win.

Until this generation that remembers the ‘90s dies off, no we won’t. 😆
class of 97 here.

it is what it is. big picture, what really is the difference between 5-7 and 6-6?

the difference only matters to us TN fans. to anyone outside the program, it won't move the needle at all.

it's be chalked up as 1st year, brand new everything, coming off the worst season ever at UT......

i think the narrative on TN after this season is going to be we showed signs of improvement, and still have a long long way to go, but probably off to an ok start under the pruitt era given the way we started to winding up beating a couple ranked SEC teams.

going to a bowl won't be viewed as some super human accomplishment by those outside the program. it would be viewed as over acheiving however.

it's only us close to the program that have deciced to put as much as we are on this game. and that's fine, i'm not saying you shouldn't or anything. it's vandy. to us, it is important. we should win this game. we hsould be disappointed if we lose.

just don't get the need to make every week a referendum on the program. it's stale.

Except that any field that has an NFL team playing on it has the money to be in good shape. I didn’t see it as a huge problem last night, but generally, there’s no excuse for an NFL franchise.

I agree but the problem with that is, a lot of time the city owns the actual stadium so they will do a lot of concerts and other things in it. Unlike say Neyland where it’s basically used for 8 Saturday’s a year and like 2 more counting the O/W game and something else.

Just want to interject into the whatever he/she said troll flow this AM to say the difference in 5-7, 6-6, 7-5 is not as much about the extra practices and playing in a toilet bowl. It's about developing a roster that seeks first to compete hard and win. That's what CJP's "straining" is all about. You win or lose with every single play. So the players have to be mentally tough and focus such that they highly value every single play. Many on this current roster don't and those guys need flushed out. CJP has been telling the world this in his own words everyday.

Winning begets winning and the better players tend to be like JJ, who hates to lose more than they love to win. Those guys will battle past the whistle to prove they are better at anything than the opponent. Which is why everybody I know loves the guy and were thrilled for him to be reinstated. So going 6-6 or better matters because the team will be straining to win another game and in practices. More players will either figure that out or be flushed in the off season. It also helps this coaching staff gel a bit more as they finish the recruiting class and plan for next season. More data points - more knowledge. It's the same in football as it is in most other occupations and industries.

Carry on...

Without reading every players thread, can someone give me the Reader's Digest version of where we stand in recruiting after a big visit weekend? How many NLI's can be accepted in the early signing period? How many remaining? Who is most likely to commit and sign in the early period? Other interesting angles, etc.
.

Just thought I'd stop in here and check on things. Yikes.

I was on the Kelly bandwagon because he was the big name that I thought we could buy. Other than beating USC, his return to cfb looks like a disaster. One poster in particular , not Beaver, brought some info that made me think Gruden was in play even though that was fool's gold. I would have been very happy with Patterson. If I knew we were going to hire a coordinator, I would've been good with Venables. I would've bought season tickets if they'd hired Leach.
Thanks. I don't think Kelly was an option, at least not with Currie. I would have been ok with Venables and very happy about Leach.

i dont' think we really tried with Kelly iirc. they released something on their end saying they "turned down Tennessee", but i dont' think it ever got past the "are you interested in talking" phase.

Chip Kelly wouldn’t leave the ESPN studio to get started with his team and the class he inherited dropped about 10 spots and this upcoming one’s a Hail Mary away from top 80! Home run hires yo...😎

Let’s re-examine in 2020. If UCLA still sucks, it will show that those who didn’t want him were right.

I have a feeling they will be fine.

I don’t care about opposing fans or the media’s perception of our season vs. expectations. The only people’s opinions not currently invested in the program I care about are recruits. I’d say the difference to them is real, although I’m sure it’s a matter of degree.
