2018 Midterm Election Thread

Yet none of us raise our kids saying "dream big, maybe one day you can pick fruit or clean hotel rooms for a living."
My problem with the Abrams statement is that we also don't tell our kids "If you don't get a good education, I'll give you lots of options."

Breitbart News has obtained photographs of members of the New Black Panther Party wielding weapons and holding signs supporting Democrat gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, a leftist who hopes to be the first black female governor in Georgia.

This comes on the heels of Oprah Winfrey’s visit to the state on Abrams behalf where she said the Democrat refuses to allow the sacrifices of those who were “lynched” and “oppressed” to be “in vain.”

The photos show the men, dressed all in black, with the Black Panther logo on their clothing and holding weapons.

Abrams opponent, Republican Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, will be the focus of a rally today in Georgia where President Donald Trump will be stumping on his behalf.

Ryan Mahoney, Kemp for Governor spokesman, has no doubt about the origin of the images. He said:
It’s no surprise that militant Black Panthers are armed and patrolling the streets of Georgia for Stacey Abrams. The Black Panthers are a radical hate group with a racist and anti-semitic agenda. They are dangerous and encourage violence against our men and women in uniform. Stacey Abrams should immediately denounce the Black Panthers and their hateful record of racism. She should stand against and condemn their attempts to intimidate hardworking Georgia voters just days before the election.

Seems a little too well-timed, no?

Yes. Because picking apples is all the farming that’s done.
No one said that or believes that. She was talking to the masses on the bottom. Not the farm owner but the apple picker, not the hotel manager but the maid.

The funny part is they're holding signs for a candidate that sought to confiscate those weapons.

Senate Races Tightening - Democrats May Take Senate And The House

As the electrifying, no-holds-barred battle for Congress in the 2018 midterm elections campaign comes to a close, Democrats appear poised to win back the House of Representatives.

Ramping up the drama, a slew of tightening polls indicate that the Senate might also drift away from Republicans if all the dominoes fall towards the opposition party on Tuesday.

While polling analysts still forecast the Senate to remain in GOP control, some surveys indicate nail-biting contests in key states in the final days before Nov. 6. In wave elections, close races often end up tilting the same way - that is what Democrats hope for this year.

In the Senate battle in recent weeks, Republicans have been confident of winning North Dakota but concede that Nevada and Arizona could go to the Democrats, making the chamber evenly balanced on 50 seats each but still in GOP control because of the tie-breaking vote of Vice President Mike Pence.

That, however, was before new polls in TENNESSEE - the "firewall" state for Republicans - dead level. If Democrats cling on in Florida, Missouri and Indiana, where their incumbents have faced tough fights and an energized Republican base loyal to President Trump, then it could all come down to the Volunteer State.

Democrats closing gap in key Senate races as late polls defy forecasts

538 has determined that Dems winning the Senate and/or Reps keeping the House would both be cases of systematic error in polling. IOW - all of the polling would have to be fundamentally flawed but in opposite directions depending on whether they are about Senate or House. It is possible but not due to just unsystematic (random) error.

Most farms are family owned and operated. Family members work the farms.
You, along with her, are both talking out of your ass

Yet none of us raise our kids saying "dream big, maybe one day you can pick fruit or clean hotel rooms for a living."

I think if more of us pushed our kids to work on farms and do manual labor jobs they wouldn’t need all the safe spaces when they did get into college and would have a different respect for working class .

If you think those are the extent of jobs in either industry then you are as clueless as Abrams
You guys are brain dead. Who said that was the extent?
Pew also found that 60% of the workers who ensure that no bad fruits or vegetables get to supermarkets are immigrants.
Other jobs where immigrants made up more than half of the workforce included plasterers and stucco masons, sewing machine operators and farm workers.
Immigrant workers are most likely to have these jobs
Maids and the accommodations industry also mentioned in the study.

The article is about jobs most likely to be help by immigrants; not what % of jobs in ag are fruit sorters. Try again.

There are great jobs in both ag and hospitality and telling people they should avoid those industries is doing both the industries and the potential employees a disservice.

Of course there is. Do you have a point you are trying to make?

yes the point is your arguments paint a world where you are either entry level or top of the heap and you completely ignore the wide range of good careers in both industries. but I guess you have to defend your candidate with whatever you can.

You are clueless. No one ever insinuated there were no good jobs in those industries. There are great jobs in those industries, and 50 times more crappy low paying jobs.

So why tell people to avoid these industries when they could have great jobs and careers there? A low paying job in any industry is the same so why is a low paying job in ag or hospitality worse? What's wrong with starting at the bottom?

I think her point was to dream big and not feel that you are trapped in some low paying labor intensive job just because of your nationality, ethnicity, or background.

she could have said that instead she said this:

"People shouldn't have to go into agriculture or hospitality to make a living in Georgia."

If she was just talking about low paying jobs the choice of "to make a living" is curious. Nothing in her statement indicates nationality, ethnicity or background. Nor does it indicate being trapped in low-paying jobs. She said people shouldn't have to work in these industries (ones that represent 1 - 7 jobs in the state).

It's elitist bullcrap.

I just found it and listened to it again. It was a throw away line in a rant about the great jobs she will create and was generally just an inarticulate thing to say. It was the kind of line your kill Trump for.
