We should be flying around like LSU is on defense. We should be ranked top 5 in the country. We should have Vandy, UK, USC, Missouri, marked as wins every year before it starts. We should never be worse than Clemson.
Saban sees it and is earning his pay tonight. He's coaching real time for the first time this year.

I know Pruitt is the guy, it’s just going to be tough to find something to do for 2 more years until we are back to handling UGA, UF and competing with Bama. Also dominating Clemson in every aspect.

Started with Fulmer hanging on past his prime rather than going out gracefully when UT still had players.

If you are blaming Fulmer for the ****-show that has been our football program; you really are clueless. Tennessee was in the SEC championship the year before he was fired. We had one of the best defenses I can remember and a top 5 recruiting class coming in. Do you think we would have ever seen such a weak offensive and defensive line on a Fulmer coached Tennessee team? No freakin way! I’m not saying Fulmer would have won another championship but I know we would have never been THIS bad.

I blame Mike Hamilton and a clueless administration that handed all of the power over to Jim Haslam and his minions. I HATE what they have done to this program and to this fan base! We have lost an entire generation of Vol fans...

Feel bad if 2007 defense is one of the best you can remember.

Gave up 100 points to FL and AL and finished around 70th in total defense and 61st in scoring defense.

Fulmer started the slide that still continues with this program.

There's a difference between sliding into a mid-tier bowl team and plummeting to record setting ineptitude

Fulmer is, in no way, responsible for the **** show that has taken place since his dismissal.
Kiffin leaving is what really crushed the program. Every transition is crippling. 2 in 14 months is like imposing the death penalty on yourself.

Kiffin being hired started it. He should have never been on our radar. He was a proven loser hired after a HOF coach was fired.
Even if he wasn't the right guy, I don't think we fall as far as we have if he's even mediocre and wins 7 games for 3 or 4 years.

The overall problem is that Tennessee hasn't at least had a Ron Zook. Zook didn't win (or win enough) but he left talent behind.

There isn't a Tennessee coach in this trail of tears that has left a much better roster than when he arrived. Each new hire has needed at least 2 full season recruiting classes (the first one doesn't count) to have a chance to compete.

I get your point. But I still cannot understand what Mike Hamilton was thinking turning down Gary Patterson in 2009. What made anyone think that a loser would be better than a proven winner?

The defensive stats are misleading. That last defense was very good and had they been paired with even a competent offense; it would have been among the premier defenses in football.
