Bingo. The guy/gal with the PhD and 25 years in field XYZ got the gig and the payday for consulting. The “associates” do the crank turning and execute the project in a majority of cases. Thus my advice in not getting pigeon holed long term in that “associate” role. I’ve seen it.

Civil is the ONE field where a deep resume on experience rules supreme.

I'm not an engineer by any stretch of the imagination but we work with a lot of different disciplines and I have come to realize that many "engineering" degrees are a sham.

I’ve done this for 30 years like I said. “Engineer” is a title earned on the job in the field. “Engineering” are degree fields. I’ve known ME masters degrees I wouldn’t let change the oil in my truck. And I know one non degreed guy I work with whom we are putting in to join us as Engineering Fellow which requires Corp VP of engineering approval at my company. And he deserves it.

And I’ve bought more text books and tech resource manuals since graduation than I ever did in school. Like any other professional field you get out of it what you put into it.
