That was my main point. They’re paid to coach these guys up and win. Not be drill sergeants. If you can’t teach these players how to play during practice without screaming like a maniac I’m not sure coaching is for you
You post that we have the same point and then go off in another direction. Vince Lombardi was a screaming cussing banshee...and won. Tom Landry was quiet, stoic and ice blooded and won. Volume is part of individual styles. If they scream and win? They get paid...and the opposite style nets green. Coaching’s for winners...however the 🤬 you get there!

I'm completely new to football and recruiting. Is it common for a new staff to require more than a half season to install a completely new system with players recruited for a different system, and who the fan base routinely pans for lacking talent? Just curious.

I've followed football recruiting for a very long time. Also, I've paid attention to what happens when offensive and defensive schemes are changed with new hires. Guys who change from the existing base defense struggle because they don't have the right players to fit the change. That usually takes 2 or 3 recruiting cycles to get the players to fit the new system. This is what's happening to UT right now. We don't have the right personnel to run Pruitt's 3-4 scheme. It will come though because this staff is much better at recruiting and developing talent. I believe we finally have the right coach in place to get us back on top. I would roll his contract every year because I believe he's the man.

These players sucked epically in the 4-2-5 the last two seasons and they’ve visibly improved in this first season. It didn’t take two recruiting cycles for Richt’s UGA team to succeed in the 3-4 and they flourished under Pruitt.

Not really because Banks shows he can be a beast at RB if he could just not fumble

I think most of us know that if a player is believed to have great potenial on both sides of the ball where Pruitt is going to place them.

I am not saying banks isn't going to be good at LB I just think it will be more by stumbling onto it than seeing it coming from the coaches.

Vince Lambardi could still coach up players without screaming every time, that’s my point. Theres a difference between yelling when someone deserves it vs teaching someone how to properly tackle. I never said coaches should ever yell or cuss. Lombardi treated his players with respect and they respected him. Starr asked him to not chew him out in front of all of his teammates again and he stopped.

Not to mention this is a different era.

I don't believe we have the same level of talent that Kirby started with. That's just me though.

Jeremy Pruitt talks post-practice Wednesday

Pruitt said the team has had a really good three days of practice, said this group has brought lots of energy. "There's only one way this team can go and that's up."

Pruitt said Flowers is still a couple weeks away from playing but good for him to be out there during practice.

Ryan Johnson is fine.

Pruitt said Banks has gotten a ton of reps the last three days. Said he could still move back to RB but likes his skill-set for LB.

CFA is going to get some work at tailback. Looks like I was confused at practice today with a No. 27 still on defense. Must've been another scout teamer.

Brandon Kennedy, who is "7-8 weeks out of surgery," is progressing really well. Pruitt jokingly asked him today if he'd be ready to play soon.

Practice Observations
Here were a handful of observations and notes…

Jarrett Guarantano was wearing a rib protector today. Tennessee’s quarterback wasn’t as sharp as Tuesday, with his passing lack a bit of the usual zip. During the routes on air, the Vols mainly focused on slants and outs today. Unlike the past three weeks, we haven’t seen any back-shoulder throws in practice this week.

In an effort to save their legs, Tracy Rocker continues to limit the reps of his three seniors during individual work, as Shy Tuttle, Kyle Phillips and Alexis Johnson all took a period off while Kurott Garland, John Mincey, Ja’Quain Blakely and Paul Bain all received extra attention. Notably, after playing more than 30 snaps last week, Matthew Butler was working with the scout team today.

The offensive line looked different Wednesday, as starting center Ryan Johnson wasn’t present while we were out there. We’ll ask Jeremy Pruitt about Johnson’s status later tonight. It might’ve been a class conflict.

With no Johnson, the Vols went with Trey Smith, Jerome Carvin, Riley Locklear, Nathan Niehaus and Drew Richmond. Will Friend and a couple GAs were livid with this group while we were out there, as they messed up a look against the scout team on three consecutive occasions.

In the secondary, Micah Abernathy remains out, so Shawn Shamburger and Todd Kelly Jr. were getting most of the work at safety alongside Nigel Warrior. Interestingly, Trevon Flowers (collarbone) was off the bike and among his teammates. Flowers didn’t take any reps while we were out there, though.

Jeremy Banks was getting plenty of run at middle linebacker, taking reps alongside Daniel Bituli during one drill while Quart’e Sapp and Darrin Kirkland Jr. worked on pattern matching with the secondary. Freshman JJ Peterson continues to work with the outside linebackers.

As has been the case since the bye week, Tennessee practiced in shells Wednesday.

Which history books did you misread? Peruse Instant Replay by Jerry Kramer and Dick Schaap when you want some firsthand knowledge! There are a multitude of HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL coaches throughout the “eras” who didn’t need megaphones because it would have muted their natural volume too drastically. Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells, Jim Mora (SR), Jim Harbaugh...hit the buzzer when you recognize a name.

You’re completely missing the point lol

Do we know? That what we would assume yet he was recruiting Puckett as a WR while others recruited as a DB. He moved Kingston harris to OG despite liking him on defense. He probably will lean toward defense as most do but most the move should so far have been out of necessity. Taylor and Thompson were desperately at cb

I wasnt arguing. Our coaches aren’t paid to be drill sergeants, are they? I’d much rather have someone who is calm and teaches guys instead of a guy who runs around and screams into a mic until his face turns red at practice. I don’t want someone who curses out players during practice and purposely embarrasses them in front of their teammates to the point they quit like a previous staff did, but I guess that’s just me.
Sometimes, some guys have to have that, but for the most part I agree. I don't agree with the absolute statenent that it is never needed from a coach, and I bet that Pruitt fires up on some of these unmotivated losers he has to deal with on this team pretty hot sometimes.

I didn’t mean that it is never needed if it did come across that way. Oh no doubt I’m sure he does a few times a practice

And you need to get your sports history from the nonfiction aisle. The aforementioned Jerry Kramer mentioned at the most recent HOF how every player on the roster had been cut at one time or another after a screaming, expletive ridden tirade. IF they were good enough, Vince would send someone from the staff to bring them back before they got on the plane. Yes...even Bart Starr. They respected him...because they lost before he took the job and WON CHAMPIONSHIPS after he took said job. Which leads us back to that tricky “point” thing you pretend to get. 😉

Again... Missing the point lol

I think THompson and Taylor tell us a lot. The others aren't elite talents on either side imo

We have losses against the following teams (current rank and record):

1. Alabama (8-0)
7. Georgia (6-1)
9. Florida (6-1)
13. West VA (5-1)

There's not a 'Bad' loss in that group. The only truly beatable team for us so far was a huge win -- Auburn.

The second half of the season will define the 2018 Vols. Every team remaining on the schedule is as beatable as Auburn. Removing an unwinnable game against Bama, this Vols team (including the coaching staff) has improved dramatically since the beginning of the season.

If they come strong with game plan and effort, there's no reason this team can't sweep the remaining teams. Will it happen? Maybe not. We'll be playing some evenly matched teams. But anyone who thinks it isn't possible is shortsighted.

This is a great perspective post.
