The QB Debate.... Post Bama (merged)

Same I hate to say but the play that tua came up a little gingerly I was wishing that he was hurt bc there is no reason saban should have put him back out there and score another TD just to rub it in a little more
If the purpose was to score another TD, they didn't need Tua to do that.

The purpose was to give your starting QB the ability to play a series out of the locker room.

5 seconds ago we were arguing JG is the best QB in the SEC East and now he’s not the best QB on his team?

less defensive scheming when KC comes in because the game is out of hand. the o-lineis the culprit and friend is the ringleader. this league is either too much for him or too much for some of them.

Some want to claim he is the team leader... HUH? I see no leadership out of him at all. JG is not the QB to lead this team. That spot is up for grabs and we will limp through the year with the debate about KC or JG. Next year... opportunity is there for a young gun to step it up and take the role.
Maybe 2 young guns if Mauer can get here early for spring practice. I definitely feel Chryst ought to see the field more after seeing him play yesterday. I'm nuetral on the debate on here over JG-KC. Doesn't matter to me just win. I trust our coaches.

Unless JG is 100% healthy then go with Chryst. JMO
Agreed. No point in getting JG seriously hurt. KC is probably ok enough to give us a chance against USC. Just gotta hope he looks as good against a Muschamp defense that prepares for him as he did against a team that hadn't prepared for him and let off the gas. Can't run a flea flicker every time we want a chance to push the ball downfield

The blitzer was the LG's man. We had enough men to pick up the blitz on that side, but the OG couldn't get his man.

QB has to have a better feel of the pocket there, but it's not like the LG there had no part in the sack/fumble. He'll be catching some hell in the film room for that this week.

That’s why the left guard (Carvin) didn’t play much after that first few series.

because the end looped out to the tackle and the corner went thru the B-gap. the guard...carvin....did not get proper depth and it was too late once he noticed he didn't. go back to the uga game. kirby ran this same exact blitz, except with the olb and de. the de makes contact with the tackle while the olb...cb yesterday....loops in and the guard misses. that's NOT a JG issue. its an o-line issue. our oline and rbs stink on blitz pickup too much!

I think it’s on both of them you have to tell your line that an extra man is coming or else they are looking for a different guy. Plus the CB shot through the gap quickly so if Carvin wasn’t told ahead of time he is already a step behind picking that blitz up. That being said Carvin played like poop.

During the last series Tua played in the 3rd quarter, CBS said Tua graded at 99.6% (and then finished off a TD series). So I don't think that snapshot of grading (by OP) was all of it. Tua was very close to 100% grade--almost unheard of. Anyone who thinks Chryst did better than Tua is wearing very orange glasses. Don't get me wrong, I love my Vols and thought Chryst did great coming off the bench, but he did not compare to Tua.

Just breaking news?? I hadn’t heard if he’s for sure done for the year...damn that just sucks...
You say this at 5:48 on Saturday and that's still not confirmed. That's not breaking news it's B/S that you take as fact and worse yet you repeat it as if you know. Buy a mirror and gaze into it because I' not gonna call you what I want to in public.

It’s hard to retain a job if you tear your ACL and the guy behind you keeps winning. It wasn’t anything he did wrong
Didn’t say he did anything wrong. Just says he got beat out by a better player.
Hurts for Bama didn’t do anything wrong unless you count losing 2 out of 31 games but he lost his job.
You assume because he had started at Stanford he is automatically better than what we already had.

This is a charged issue.

KC is more like Montana.
JG is likeAikman.

Exactly.

We have the HoF QBs. Pruitt just needs 3 to 6 more recruiting classes so his players can buy into what he is preaching.

May well be on our way to losing by less than 30 to Bama in the next 5 years if the game isn't too big for the players.

Chrysts ability to get rid of the ball quick is a good combination with a mediocre offensive line.

It’s huge!

Plus the fact that he Is pretty good at reading a defense keeps him from taking those vicious hits.

LOL, I'm sure they watched film on KC and expected to see him play.. They knew they would most likely knock JG out on 3rd and long perched in the pocket for a deep throw. We've seen that all year

Also tua didn’t grade well at all. Makes you wonder how much of his performance is based on unreal protection from te Oline and great separation by the receivers
But but but the CBS announcers all but guaranteed Tua the Hypeman.

Listen to John and Yoko this Sunday morn, sports fans as they sing their appeal...………"All we are say...ing is give Chryst a chance, All we are say...ing is give Chryst a chance."

Have you ever been around somebody who functioned at a job just fine up to a point that they had too many things coming at them at once, and then their brain cells just flew off in all directions and it became apparent they couldn't handle an overload??? I've had problems like that personally. I think JG is that way when he lines up as QB. There's just too much coming at him at once and he isn't able to handle it at times. Those times when he seems completely unaware of unblocked defenders overloaded to one side. Those times when he is getting temporary protection but he can't go thru progressions with 2nd and 3rd receiver patterns. It floods his brain and he can't pull the trigger in time. Those times when a defensive alignment should automatically change the play call to a screen when a blitz looks imminent right where he is going to hand the ball off to his RB.

I'm not saying any of us know what we're talking about. I know I don't. But just listen to John and Yoko and think it over.

People arguing Guarantano being even in the top half of the SEC East don't even deserve a response. Those are likely from the group that have been carrying the Guarantano flag since the kid announced his interest in Tennessee about three years ago. These people were moronically convinced he was the chosen one to lead Tennessee due to clever "marketing" by his family and others. This was all backed up by the tooting of Guarantano family message by volquest writers, and others, when they covered the kids announcement from "Times Square". All of these people waited for any hint of last weeks performance for two and half years by celebrating average at best performances against the likes of ETSU, UTEP, and other subpar opponents. So, once last weeks game happened(Thanks to a good effort by JG and a spectacular performance by a WR group that bailed his tail out by getting almost literally EVERY 50/50 throw.) it's no shock this group was waiting to declare him the best in the SEC. Most of this group will NEVER admit any fault by the kid and will toot his horn all the way up until the moment he marches his pouting tail back to New Jersey when he transfers. If he's officially benched, who will be surprised when it happens?

What people saw yesterday is what Guarantano has done in practically every appearance in his career against ANY defense worth a flip. That's spending half the game picking himself up off the ground. He is in his THIRD season on campus and second season of playing time along with years of playing in high school. If the guy doesn't know how to play quarterback at this point then he won't. Simple as that. Mostly only sheepish type people with blind loyalty will argue otherwise.

I do not wish the kid illwill, but the sooner he's out of Knoxville the better off for everyone. Wish him well at Rutgers, etc.

Right now, KC is better. Even before being injured, JG was getting frustrated, and it was starting to show. Not his fault, our OL is simply a sieve against a defense of this quality.

But generally, JG is the better QB. Not taking anything away from Keller, he's playing very well. He hasn't taken all the sacks and near-sacks, and he looks calm and confident. Throwing it well, as a result.

Let's just don't jinx him and get him blasted, too. No one plays well with a jack hammer repeatedly pounding them in the face.
What baffles me is that Helton let's JG drop back and run plays that take several seconds to develop and in the process gets him blasted every time he tries to throw a pass. JG finally gets injured and Helton brings Chrystal in and calls quick hitters and screens which allow him to stay clean and upright and then most on here wanna crown Chryst the better QB. I call bull!! How about giving JG some of those quick throws to keep him from getting him blasted every time he tries to throw the ball. Prime example, the quick throw to JJ which resulted in one of our td's. 2 step drop and get it out to the receiver the play is designed for? And please don't give me that old, stainless argument that JG holds the ball too long! You have to hold the ball for a couple of seconds at least to have a chance to complete a deep ball or even a crossing route where the receivers have to go across the field. Chryst couldn't start for a mediocre pac-12 team and Pruitt knew it. He is an insurance policy and nothing more

In a 58-21 loss? Equivalent to being the smartest kid in summer school imo. He played fairly well in relief of JG, especially given the circumstances. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Nice to know he’s a competent backup.
JG vs Auburn was the anomaly. Either the guy won’t put in the work to learn how to read defenses or he can’t figure it out. I’m not sure which is worse. He a redshirt sophomore who takes too many hits because he can’t see obvious blitz packages and refuses to shift the protection. Is the o-line bad? YES. But a lot of the abuse JG is taking is because he isn’t playing smart football.

Chryst doesn’t take the hits JG does. Why? Because he can read the defense and gets the ball out. He played well yesterday and deserves that recognition. Is the answer and should he be playing over JG? I have no idea and will trust the coaches to make that determination, but the love affair with JG and his “toughness” when much of the pain he is taking is due to his poor decision-making is down right lame.

Helton was in the process of adjusting to Alabama and they were letting off the gas. Chryst was a beneficiary of that. He had a great quarter. Then he came back down.
