The QB Debate.... Post Bama (merged)

If Chryst was a junior would the QB position be more contested? Would JG still have the starting job? Or are we just throwing JG in there to give him experience for the next few years despite the fact we're probably going to get a new QB anyways? Do you really see JG being a senior and going to the NFL?

Right now it appears JG has a slightly better arm, kid is tough, but immature and it affects his gameplay, and he lacks the ability to read defenses and make on-the-spot decisions.

KC is more mature, possibly leadership quality- which matters. Slightly less arm strength but I'd think just as mobile as JG (because JG hasn't shown true signs of being dual threat, sorry).

What exactly has JG done this season to imply he's immature?

What exactly has JG done this season to imply he's immature?

It's a lot of facial expressions & body emotions that are probably overlooked most of the time but if you watch closely you do see it.

Pouty-ness on the sideline when he wasn't starter last year is a prime example.

Confusion on many plays (and yes I know he's learning a new scheme under the new coaches) but it's still relevant.

There's been times I've seen him look confused as to which type of play it is supposed to be (standing looking at the coaches on the sideline for over 10 seconds as the play clock is dwindling) and that's last year and this year so it's hard to blame the current coaches...

He somehow really lacks the ability to read very obvious blitzes. He stands still.

I wish him all the best of course. I just don't think he is or will be 'the' guy. Shrout (or a new recruit) very well may take the starter job and JG will transfer to an easier conference.

What exactly makes you think he is not immature? What have you seen? (Not being snide; genuinely curious).

I believe he plays smarter

Smarter maybe the right word to use here. I think KC sees the field better than JG and for that reason, he has a better feel for the game. Many times he threw balls away rather than forcing and holding the ball to take the big hit that JG may have tried to make work. Smarter and Better Vision is what KC has, IMO.

I believe it was a mistake by Pruitt in the opening game of this season to select Guarantano as the best chance for success. I’m not saying Guarantano isn’t a good QB, just not yet ready for prime time.

It seems almost every time CHRYST comes in he shines and outs points on the board. There is no better example than the 21 points this team put on the board with him at the helm against arguably the best team in the nation. Imagine what he could have done if Pruitt had picked the right QB for this years job begins with the first game!!!

Pruitt chose to hide behind the idea its a building year so win’s and losses don’t really matter. He was brought in to win with integrity.

Under CHRYST we should of had a 6/1 or maybe 5/2 record, not 3/4!!!

Guarantano is now hurt, give Chryst a real chance to save the season and begin to bring back respectability for this team in desperate need of confidence moving into the future.

Just based on the small sample size we've seen, it's hard to argue that KC isn't the better option.

I don't know what practice looks like and obviously JG was more familiar with the system since he was here in the spring, but if yesterday is any indication it's clear what needs to happen.

Of course anyone can hand off a couple times so I guess Helton needs to decide who he thinks is better suited for all his 3rd and 8 calls

Like I’m asking this in all seriousness, but what has been shown that the two QB’s are miles apart in “arm talent”? I’m legit asking. Seen that thrown out here all last night.

His TD's only came against the best team in the nation in the second quarter, and he only had a completion % of like 60. JG has that toughness and that completion % bruh. Low completion % with 3 TDs and no INT does not make a good QB. Need to up that completion % and those INT's to obtain proper homer ratios.

My perception is that KC can at least somewhat read a defense, use a less predictable snap count, go through progressions instead of staring down one receiver, and most importantly not take unnecessary sacks. I could be wrong but Id stick with him.

We haven't seen enough of Chryst so who knows. You want Guarantano to finish the season so he's better next season.

I want us to get to a bowl game for the extra practice and help in recruiting so more than just JG is better next year. Whoever gets us more wins now is helping the whole team more next year.

Maybe KC was AS good...but NOT demonstrably BETTER in practice/camp. Meanwhile, this being “Year 0” (according to Dooley...and ESPECIALLY since JG had already taken a red shirt)...JG starting & KC as backup made the most sense for the future.

Obvious JG is the more physically talented QB. It's just as obvious Chryst is much more seasoned and better at reading the defense and making decisions so he does not get sacked as much. His two TD drives in the 2 nd Qtr. Against the best team in the country were a thing of beauty compared to watching our offense looking like a duck trying to pull a truck the rest of the game.

Wouldn’t you want JG to finish out the year to get experience since he is here 2 more years
Me personally no I wouldn't. I would put in whoever has the hot hand. Now if i was convinced JG was the future then maybe let him finish out and learn etc., but I'm definitely not convinced of that. JG worries me when he never changes up a snap count, calls a good audible, takes his eyes off one receiver per play, or avoids taking sacks that kill drives repeatedly. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

It's obvious JG doesn't have as good of a football IQ as KC. KC makes much better reads and is a more seasoned QB. JG is tough as nails but in some ways is his own worst enemy by not making good reads and holding the ball way too long. I think our chances of winning 3 more games is about the same with either one of them playing

You have to ask some key questions about JG:
Can he make the pre snap reads necessary to win against an SEC defense
Does he have the peripheral vision to see what’s coming from his weak side
Does he properly go thru all of his progressions
Can he make all of the necessary throws
Can he make anything happen with his feet (escapability/mobility).
Does he have leadership qualities on and off the field.

Its easy to sit on the couch and watch a few games and make decisions about only what you see, that no one holds you accountable for.
Imagine being held accountable for every foolish thing you've ever posted online. Luckily reasonable people can see it and go, "Hmmm isn't it so much more interesting when people like him form their own opinions? It could be nonsense but we're not reporting the news here."

Yes this.
Don't blindly start him just cause he'll be here next year.

So, I'm guessing you didn't like my opinion?

Who would Nick Saban play? Nuff said!!!

Win now brings higher expectations and greater accountability for every player on the team to give 200% in practice and in the game. It changed the attitude of culture for the better. It also give potential recruits the solid message that the VOLs mean business and we are back after a decade of chaos at the helm, head coach and AD wise.

What message do you want recruits to get?

Wins now is the only way of getting solid upper tier recruits who can help our VOL team rise in the national ranks of dominance and truly begin playing for Championships again.

That can’t happen with out WINs NOW!

You can play KC for the rest of the year and still give JG valuable playing time for next year.
