The QB Debate.... Post Bama (merged)

You have to ask some key questions about JG:
Can he make the pre snap reads necessary to win against an SEC defense
Does he have the peripheral vision to see what’s coming from his weak side
Does he properly go thru all of his progressions
Can he make all of the necessary throws
Can he make anything happen with his feet (escapability/mobility).
Does he have leadership qualities on and off the field.

You forgot "can he anticipation a throw and go to a spot before the receiver is open". If he is out for multiple games we still will not know before next season. I guess that was CJPs reasoning.

Who would Nick Saban play? Nuff said!!!

Win now brings higher expectations and greater accountability for every player on the team to give 200% in practice and in the game. It changed the attitude of culture for the better. It also give potential recruits the solid message that the VOLs mean business and we are back after a decade of chaos at the helm, head coach and AD wise.

What message do you want recruits to get?

Wins now is the only way of getting solid upper tier recruits who can help our VOL team rise in the national ranks of dominance and truly begin playing for Championships again.

That can’t happen with out WINs NOW!

You can play KC for the rest of the year and still give JG valuable playing time for next year.

Hmmm, so you know beyond a shadow of a doubt who Saban would play if he were the coach? Please tell us how you know this.

If anything I felt you judged mine and for some reason felt obligated to respond. I agreed with what you said though.

Thanks for the honesty. No, I didn't even read your post, just the OP and one other.

I don't comment often on the QB situation because I just don't know. I understand its all about opinions, but I'm saying I just don't have an opinion on which one I think should be starting.

I just see the situation like walking in a restaurant that's on an hour wait and seeing several empty tables, and you just don't understand why. Some people raise all kinds if hell about it, and if was left up to them those tables would be sat, and then the whole restaurant goes down. Because like it or not, there was a reason for those tables being empty.

Anyway, I don't disagree with your opinion.

We haven't seen enough of Chryst so who knows. You want Guarantano to finish the season so he's better next season.

I see your point BUT none of our losses was due to q b play
I personally, would like to see Keller start. If he succeeds, it is good. If he wains, then J G can always take back the starting roll

You don’t have your name added to the Johnny Unitas watch list for being a junk QB. (His last season at Stanford)

JG ... you guys loved him last week. This week, we lose, and you run over the kid.

The line has a lot to do with the success of the team. The QB is the catalyst but the line has to work or it want matter.

It never fails. The backup QB is the smartest and has the most potential of any player on very football team.
I dont think either player is as good or as bad as they re made out to be. JG has had moments, Chryst had some yesterday.

If anything it's good to know your backup showed signs of being capable.

No doubt about it. If there's one place where we're in good shape, it's at backup QB.

Until we start blocking people, it doesn't matter who the QB is.

His TD's only came against the best team in the nation in the second quarter, and he only had a completion % of like 60. JG has that toughness and that completion % bruh. Low completion % with 3 TDs and no INT does not make a good QB. Need to up that completion % and those INT's to obtain proper homer ratios.

Are you smokin crack or just drunk?

KC - 9/16 - 60%
JG - 5/10 - 50%

Even a bama fan can tell that 60 is higher than 50.

Obvious JG is the more physically talented QB. It's just as obvious Chryst is much more seasoned and better at reading the defense and making decisions so he does not get sacked as much. His two TD drives in the 2 nd Qtr. Against the best team in the country were a thing of beauty compared to watching our offense looking like a duck trying to pull a truck the rest of the game.

Most of the rest of the game was in the entire 2nd half where the O scored 0 points.

Wouldn’t you want JG to finish out the year to get experience since he is here 2 more years

KC playing now and JG being secessful next year are not mutually exclusive.

I want wins now for the recruits Pruitt will need next year to genuinely give our VOL team the depth at every position we will need to overcome the injuries every team faces. Recruits that can help protect JG next year.

That is the formula that gives JG the best chance for sucsess next year as he watches a veteran win and learns from game film and applies those lessons to his own abilities. Yes he can still play some this year as a rotational backup.

KC playing the rest of the year would also give the current coaching staff time to work with JG so the VOLs can have real success next year.

JG is the guy. KC got some run, played well, and I’m happy for him. That does not mean he needs to suddenly be the starter. The coaches watch these guys every day in practice. If they though KC was the guy, they’d play the guy. I simply don’t see this as being a debate anymore. JG has played the best football this season. He’s been more confident, made some big throws, even the leadership aspect has improved. The kid got hurt (probably earlier than we think and that lick just took the wind out of him) and coaches decided they wanted to save his life. KC came in guns blazing because his ass hadn’t been planted every drop back for the whole first half. He made two really great throws that first series. The throw to Chandler was an absolutely athlete moment by number 8, had little to do with KC. After that, the magic left. All the people who want KC are simply looking for a simply solution to fix the offense and you all are looking at the wrong position group. Move Trey back to guard next season, get Kennedy back, add the two 2019 5* to the tackle spots (because they will immediately be better than every tackle we have), and watch this offense blossom.

What you just said is the reason Dobbs didn’t get action earlier in his career, but we know how that turned out.

Big picture no.

I do think Chryst does a better job pre snap of seeing the blitz and starting that clock quicker. The end result may not be a positive play but the sack fumble chances are reduced.

Keller Chryst is the Vols’ highest graded player by PFF

My *GUESS:.
JG is probably the better QB in most categories. The 1 thing our limited view of Chryst suggested, is that he reads the defense better and adjusts.. or at least avoids the sack but possibly takes advantage of the blitz.
That's a huge deal but it will probably never win him the starting job. The brutal truth is that we don't have a good enough pass rush to simulate other teams in practice.
If Chryst is more beneficial because of our weak OL, it will probably only be seen in injury situations, never in practice.
I like both QB's, just for different reasons.

JG may be better at one point but it’s obvious Chryst is a much calmer and better QB right now.

He needs to start from here on out.

I know it’s only been about a quarter but he is much more poised and the game is much slower for him. A blind man can see it.
Give KC a shot. He definitely gave the O a spark yesterday. I am more worried now about who #3 will be.

Not hard to do. Just have us play 6 linemen against our OL in practice. That’s what it looks like in games anyway. Teams are getting the pressure of 6 blitzers with 3-4 guys

If JG is truly not worried about picking up the blitz and changing protection, you have to consider going to Chryst. You can't just accept your QB is going to get blind sided 5 times a time.

We threw the towel in the 4th Qtr and didn't even attempt to score. Ran the ball 90% of the time just to run the clock and get the massacre over with. No one can argue that KC looked much better than JG yesterday. I like JG but the stage looked to big for him yesterday.
