A lot of his throws, I’m sure he would have been happy with 2 seconds.A lot of JG fans are enamored with his cage match toughness, he has that in spades. But in the SEC no QB should expect 4-5-6 secs to decide where to throw the ball. That is JGs weakness, was last year and is again showing itself this year.
An example tonight . JG has stacked receivers on the left. Two corners near the line. The safety creeps down to 7 or 8 yards from the line - receivers. This is the tip that a corner blitz is coming. It could be a fake blitz. So the QB should audible a hot route and make the blitz work for him. Something safe , like the low receiver in the stack runs a slant. He will be uncovered. A blitz is an opportunity to a solid signal caller. Jeff Fisher almost refused to blitz Peyton. Instead of taking advantage of the blitz and attacking it ....nothing was done. and the play was blown up .
This is not an indictment of JG . I am pleased with his progress. He doesn't understand coverage . There are a hundred other examples. This ability alone would be a massive improvement

He's definitely gotta get better at all those things, but IIRC on that sack/fumble we had enough guys on that side to pick up the blitz. It was kind of hard to tell there whether JG didn't see it coming or just trusted his protection too much.I Agree. Keller is the more Mature QB and I think his understanding of the game and his experience allows him to make quicker decisions. That matters, especially if your o line sucks. JG has always taken way too long to make decisions and honestly that is what caused that sack and fumble. Not the o line. JG just doesn’t have the cerebral part of the game. He doesn’t lift the team up when ***** going bad. He has a slightly stronger arm. That’s it. Start Keller.
I've always been, and always will be, a fan of whoever is taking snaps for us. I absolutely believe JG has a better arm, and probably talent. I don't get why Vs Florida and today he's lost, but KC comes in and both games puts up points. Last week was career day, but his only conference win. Is it like some have mentioned, he doesn't gel with the team, yet lights out in practice? I'm legit confused about the whole thing. I sincerely hope he's okay though.I do think after this game, the QB situation is very, very murky. JG could have lost his starting job.

And out come the JG haters. Right on cue. Lol.
Very good point... those 50/50 balls were caught by TN receivers because of their superior skills... passes were just in the area and the best man won out on the catch.I'm not a JG hater but I don't think the team rallies around him. Player of the week last week, but the wr's made quite a few great catches.
I really think the issue with JG is his mentality and his immaturity. Especially the immaturity. Everyone knows how he pouted on the sideline last year when he wasn't starter.
Everyone knows he cannot read a defense. He consistently looks confused during plays and on the sideline. He seems to lack leadership on the field and perhaps off the field. It seems like he's more worried about his stats than winning (which again, I blame on his lack of maturity.) If he's really as immature as we see on the field he might also be off the field and perhaps it's affecting the rest of the team? I just don't see leadership qualities in him.
The kid is tough and I hope he's ok. I don't think he is SEC caliber yet and I'm not sure he ever will be unless he finally realizes football is a mental game just as much as a physical one...
I know the play you are referencing. It was a 5 rusher 5 blocker situation. Unless the ol blows an assessment or throws a look out block, qb should be able to read a route before hitting a check down. That situation calls for a 3 second release, but in the first quarter the ol was not up to the job.
If Chryst was a junior would the QB position be more contested? Would JG still have the starting job? Or are we just throwing JG in there to give him experience for the next few years despite the fact we're probably going to get a new QB anyways? Do you really see JG being a senior and going to the NFL?
Right now it appears JG has a slightly better arm, kid is tough, but immature and it affects his gameplay, and he lacks the ability to read defenses and make on-the-spot decisions.
KC is more mature, possibly leadership quality- which matters. Slightly less arm strength but I'd think just as mobile as JG (because JG hasn't shown true signs of being dual threat, sorry).
