Weird observation.... 2018 Kentucky is eerily similar to 2016 Vols

Come on, the woe is me posts are smothering this board lately. Let’s just enjoy the weird twilight zone of them copying our season for a second.
I pull for the Vols with everything in my heart. I pull for them when they are down by 28 points in the 4th quarter against Alabama. I never turn the game off early, no matter what.

That said, it is going to be a celebration if UT beats UK this year. Let that sink in.

Now, I am patiently waiting for the Vols to turn it around so we can party our asses off while Alabama watches from their couches.

They get an off week then Vandy. We had to face Bama immediately after. I feel the seasons will diverge at that point.

Mobile QB, better runner than thrower

Stud RB that will play Sundays

Struggled first game against a cupcake

Broke the Florida streak

Beat a ranked rival

Started 5-0

Got a ton of media attention, achieved the highest ranking they’ve had in as far back as anyone could remember

Then went to Texas A&M, came back from behind on a miracle turnover to send it to OT. Lost in OT.

....... the similarities are insane
Wilson is nowhere near Dobbs. Not even close. And Dobbs threw it WAY better than Wilson.

That’s what everyone has tried to do. What a lot of people aren’t taking notice of is that it has been Kentucky’s defense that has allowed them to keep pounding the rock.

Florida didn’t score. Carolina didn’t score. MSU didn’t score. A&M didn’t score.

That defense has been really good this season and if you don’t take the run away via the scoreboard, they’ll keep pounding Snell and eventually he’ll get rolling against most of their competition.

A&M was able to do it without getting points on the board.

this is because everyone but a&m got impatient with them. that a&m game shouldn't have went to overtime at all except a&m gave them a gift. other than that, they shut ky down. ky's defense has weaknesses, but they've matched up with teams so far. now they've been exposed

Lol.

Texas A&M scored less at home against UK than they did against Clemson and Alabama.

Both defenses played well. Unfortunately it was UK who just couldn't do anything in the 2nd half which cost them the game. Some of it was the horrendous play calling, but a lot of it was the Aggies pressure. We didn't have an answer.

I blame it on Stoops taking a page from Butch’s book and settling for OT with 3 timeouts and 2 minutes on the clock. One day these non-SEC rooted coaches are going to learn the super-safe approach is how you lose every time in this league.

this. can't believe he sat on the ball w/3 TO's and 2 minutes. dumbfounded. awful situational football management. curled up in his shell and played not to lose. he got what he deserved. i honestly felt bad for KY at that point. it was like reliving a nightmare...in the end, i was just glad it was a team in orange doing it this time......

I also hate the 4 or 5 play sequence leading up to the 2nd Aggie touchdown. Multiple bad calls from the refs. Multiple mistakes. Then it all ends up being a quick 7 points in a game where our defense was really playing tough.

Those are some fascinating parallels, Chatt-town, you're right.

So let's extrapolate, assuming the parallels will continue to pile up.

2016 Vols went 3-3 after the A&M game, with losses to Bama, USCe, and Vandy. Wins over Ky, Mizzou, and Cupcake.

2018 Cats could go 3-3 from this point, losing to ____, ____, and Vandy. Wins over ____, Mizzou, and Cupcake (MTSU).

So how to fill in the blanks? Loss to UGa seems likely. That's one. The other loss, and the remaining win, have to come from Tennessee and Louisville. The way both we and the Cardinals have played so far, that could go either way, equally.

Or, things could go a little less parallel, and Vandy could be a win for the Cats, or Mizzou a loss. That would shift the roles of Tennessee and Louisville as well.

Will be fun to watch how it evolves. Thanks for pointing this out, very interesting!

Go Vols!

p.s. Does this mean Mark Stoops is Butch Jones in slow motion? That would be very bad news for the 'Cats, indeed. But nah, doesn't seem the type. More like a watered-down version of his brother than any Butch mirror.

Stoops has to learn to play your style of football for 4 Quarters.

Being conservative with the game on the line will get you fired in this league quicker than anything.

If Stoops is anything like Butch, he won’t learn from his mistakes but I think he has more football knowledge than Butch ever will.

Looking forward to this years matchup with the Cats.

Does anyone realize that we are comparing Tennessee’s best season in a decade to this year’s Kentucky squad?

Except we were a favorite to win the East in 2016, and Georgia sucked still.

Know what happened though? UF hung around long enough to pull off an upset vs LSU in a real slobberknocker and slithered its way to Atlanta. Could happen again...

Here's one possibility: Kentucky comes off the bye week and beats Vandy in Lexington. They lose a close one to Missouri and then another to Georgia. On a 2-game losing streak, they come into Neyland and lose to a fighting group of Vols. The Cats finish the season with wins over MTSU and Louisville. Finish 8-4 (4-4) and go to a decent bowl.

They've been very patient and allowed their coach to grow a program. If we are super-patient too maybe someday we can grow up to be like them. And the similarities really are pretty interesting.
Maybe we can someday grow up and be like Kentucky in football? Wow I guess it really is over for us.
