Best post I have read in a very long time. Thank you.To all my fellow morans and families walking through the Alzheimer's/dementia experience with loved ones - our hearts and prayers go out to you. In a month it will be the 7th anniversary of my wonderful mother-in-law's death from dementia. As Jacket posted, be thankful if your loved one knew you in the end. Ours did not. In the end her body forgot how to chew, swallow, and breathe. It was a brutal, 10+ year experience for her and our family. However, today she is with the Lord and all is good - no more pain, no more fear. The grief we felt gave way to great memories and life lessons to honor her, which were to love deeper and serve others better.
If you can't mock your hated rival, then whom can you mock? I am in!! Mehlan sucks.Dan Mullen: An VN Oral History, retold by Nicksjuzunk:
I would like to give some history and context to the Dan Mullen debate. I'm going to dig just a bit through post history, because I've got a weird memory and these things are able to be found if you desire to search.
1. The Context: When this debate began, Butch Jones was still the head coach. Generally speaking, there were roughly speaking, two camps. Gruden, and other coaching candidates. The most "reasonable" names circulated at this point are as follows:
a. Jon Gruden
b. Scott Frost
c. Dan Mullen
d. Chip Kelly
e. Other names, Patterson, Brohm, Campbell, were also pitched around.
At this point in the game, every Vol fan had the exact same thing in mind... bring me the coach who will give us the opportunity to win championships. We heard things such as "money will not be an issue" to get our hopes very high. When Butch is fired, Currie gives the illusion that he is about to run this thing. Hopes are high on Rocky Top. We were told we were "swimming in different waters."
2. The Conversation: So, being a message board, we begin to pick apart each candidate. Gruden has never been a college coach, Frost has never won at a big program, Kelly would never come, Campbell's buy out, Brohm is too small, Patterson will never come, etc. This brings us to Dan Mullen. I was largely one of the Mullen detractors, which is well known. I believe McGill coined the phrase "Mehlan", which unfortunately was more catching than my personal "7.5 win Dan". I'm not about to go over the reasons of the anti-Mullens, as this has been discussed endlessly, but the context seems to be lost and only the conversation is remembered. No one every questions whether Mullen was a "good" coach. He is obviouslly a great quarterback coach and did very well at Mississippi State. The question at this point in the game was, "Can he bring championships to Tennessee?" Because that is exactly what our eye was on at this point in the game. I personally, did not think so.
3. The Continuation: So, we are knee deep in the coaching search, and it becomes clear, we've been fed a line. There is no Santa, there will be no "proven winner" hired, and suddenly

When it became clear that we would not be able to hire a tier 1 coach, most people said Mullen would be just fine... but Florida had grabbed him. Later on, in March, I would admit...

4. The Concession: Given the resources at Florida, it's obvious that

But will he win championships? I still tend to think not, though he certainly could.
5. The Continuation: Having now settled exhaustively how 95% of anti-Mullen posters feel about Dan Mullen, I would like to let you konw that I will continue to take shots at Mullen every chance that I get. I will laugh at his dancing, mock his cheesy quotes and call him 7.5 Win Dan with every single loss that he takes. I am a fan, and he coaches my most hated rival. It doesn't mean I think he is a terrible coach, but I'll hammer that if he gives me nails. I am not sure if we will ever get the joy of overtaking the Gators while he coaches, but with every slip, I will be there to gloat, because when your team is as bad as the Vols are right now, you gotta enjoy something.
You have toThat’s your opinion, but don’t get mad at me when i believe we have better OLmen on roster than schools like: Vandy, wake Forrest, Rutgers, Virginia, and whatever crappy school you want to put in there.

i don't care if Chandler gets more carries.Only thing is JJ can pass BUT Chandler should get more carries period.
take away the venom, and i don't really disagree. You guys bowing at the altar of Meh wuth your coach envy is sickening. Dan Mullen is a good coach, but if Keremy Pruitt is having a hard time recruiting at Tennessee, then Mehlan would have been toast here. He is a good place for him to succeed.
If you idiots can't see how fundamentally footbaw stupid, slow and soft..the triple whammy of suckitude...that this roster is..Then you are just willingly stupidly blind.
NOBODY..would be doing any better with this roster to this point...NOBODY..I Pruitt can get these guys playing any better, and he already has imo, then he will have done a great job this year overall.
Yah. That guy's an idiot.Nothing like McGill calling Vol fans stupid blind idiots for disagreeing with his opinion to start out a Monday morning...

that didn't bother me. i was pretty torn. i did a lot to talk myself in to the notion that he'd be good here. and there was plenty to point to to be honest.Mullen is a gator through and through, that is why I did not want him here.
Lol...might as well get started earlyNothing like McGill calling Vol fans stupid blind idiots for disagreeing with his opinion to start out a Monday morning...

I literally agree with everything you said.that didn't bother me. i was pretty torn. i did a lot to talk myself in to the notion that he'd be good here. and there was plenty to point to to be honest.
i just thought Tennessee wasn't a good fit for him. i don't think he's an elite recruiter. but at FL, it makes more sense given the history he has there, and the talent pool he'd be in, where he'd be able to get high quality players w/out a ton of effort.
to be good here, we do need a relentless recruiter...that was the main thing for me. i know he's a good offensive mind, i was sold on his ability to coach qb's. i just felt like he'd need someone else to be able to get them here.
