Also the championship format of the day. Nick Saban would look a lot less impressive if you discounted the two times he has lost his own division but still sent to the national title game IMO.

I agree with the losing a game part.
Heck, I would go as far as calling it fact. We lose to Arkansas that year, or any game, we don't get to play for the championship. Several other years, one game cost us the opportunity.
Can't swear it would apply to Bama though, they seem to have a different set of rules/standards, in every department.

Not quite and Bama’s dominance has been sustained for a decade now.

I agree about the length of the dominance. But Saban’s best 4 year stretch is also 5 losses in 4 years.
