I really don't doubt the defense will be real good in a few years I just hope we aren't like Mcelwain and have 0 offense
That’s my worry as well. I’m not sure the kind of offense our staff wants to run will work too well until we’re 8-10 deep with absolute studs up front. And we haven’t exactly seen much willingness to adapt to the talent on the roster or the kind of playcalling that helps mask deficiencies either.

Agree. It’ll be year 4 or 5 at the earliest for our offense to be the way they want it imo

Auburn extended Malzahn last year and put his buyout in the $15 million plus range IIRC. No matter how bad the wheels fall off he'll be there next year

I looked it up and $15 million was an understatement. He signed a 7 year $49 million dollar extension and the buyout is 75% of whatever's left on his contract. So $31 million buyout at the end of this year, decreasing by about $5 mil a year. He'll be there a while

Wow! Mike Hamilton their AD?

I think the willingness to adapt will come after they establish their base in what they want to do, and also get players in here..It is logical, and I'm 99 % sure that is what they are committed to doing this year. It is pissing us off that they are doing it, and I don't think Pruitt gives a crap. He is right..If you can't execute your basics in the right way, you are never going to be any good.

And let’s face it. How much can we really do when we’re playing catch up in S&C to virtually every opponent we play?

Exactly..If Pruitt can finish the OL class thry are putting together..I don't believe the rebuild will take as long as we think. I don't believe Helton is a three yards and a cloud of dust guy. Once they start executing the basics correctly, and get stronger/bigger on the line, then I think you will see the wrinkles.

I’m hoping this isn’t the case and they’re just sacrificing some success this year for the sake of development. Hopefully Pruitt is right. We can’t really say for sure yet anyway.

But I’m not totally convinced that’s the case yet. You can do that without having to be completely predictable in your playcalling and putting guys in situations they’re unlikely to succeed. If what we’ve seen so far is what they want our offense to be, then we’re not gonna have a ton of success on offense against SEC defenses without an OL that is significantly more talented and experienced. We’re not just a few new bodies away from that, IMO.

The best OCs manage to adapt their scheme and playcalling to their unit’s strengths and deficiencies year in and year out, have a knack for dialing up the right play at the right time, and manage to get their best playmakers the ball consistently every game.

We haven’t seen too much of that thus far. That doesn’t mean we won’t see this staff put together a successful offense at some point. I’m just not convinced we see them put a very good one on the field unless they manage to put together a unit that is more talented than most of our opponents.

FWIW, I’m not sure I believe Helton Ian a 3 yards and a cloud of dust guy either. But I am
Curious about what exactly the gameplanning/playcalling dynamic is between Pruitt/Helton/Friend. Part of me wonders if there are just too many cooks in the kitchen there or whether those three don’t necessarily all in the same page in what they want to do. Whatever the issue is, Helton certainly hasn’t looked like a $1.2 million OC thus far. I’m not really holding my breath that he’s gonna be the next Kiffin or Spurrier calling plays.
