Fundamental work continued for the Vols on Wednesday in what was the second of three practices this week.
Head coach Jeremy Pruitt again spent the individual periods we saw watching his offense closely. He watched the quarterbacks and tight ends in route work they did and stayed with the quarterbacks as they moved over to work with the receivers.
For the receivers it was about vertical routes with the quarterbacks. Pruitt, OC Tyson Helton, and WR coach David Johnson were imploring the receivers to catch the ball at it's highest point. Even Pruitt was individually coaching Josh Palmer and Cedric Tillman on why getting the ball at it's highest point is a must from a defensive backs point of view. Understanding the why as Pruitt likes to say. Marquez Callaway, who was dinged up on Saturday, continued to work on the side Wednesday.
The tight ends were without Eli Wolf who was working out on the side. One would assume that is why LaTrell Bumphus was back at tight end today after working on defense Tuesday. JaQuain Blakely remained on defense working with the defensive line.
On the offensive line it was about getting off the ball faster, with more explosion and power. The offensive line work has been heavy fundamental like fall camp type fundamental work. The same can be said for the tight ends in their run game work. Obviously, both those positions have to move some people in the second half of the season. Of course, Tennessee is without Riley Locklear who had surgery earlier this week after being injured at Georgia.
Defensively it looked like a lot of fundamental, back to basics work today during the open periods. Defensive linemen worked on leverage, staying low and small details like hand placement.
Linebackers and defensive backs both did a ton of work on open field tackling and Kevin Sherrer was on his guys hard, making several players repeat reps if he didn’t like what he saw.
Blakely after working with the outside linebackers on Tuesday he slid down a spot and was with Tracy Rocker’s defensive line group on Wednesday. That unit appeared to work a good bit on run fits and gap control.
Linebacker Darin Kirkland and safety Micah Abernathy were back on the practice field on Wednesday.
