A few interesting stats so far this season:

Running Back by committee:

Jordan (63 car, 258 yds, 4.1 ypc, 2 TDs)
Banks (41 car, 161 yds, 3.9 ypc, 3 TDs)
Chandler (40 car, 247 yds, 6.2 ypc, 1 TD)
London (36 car, 205 yds, 5.7 ypc, 3 TDs)

Four Different Pass Catchers have caught balls of 50+ yards (we had only 4 total plays of 50+ yards all of last season): Palmer, Callaway, Pope, Murphy.

Sophomore Palmer Showing Flashes: Josh Palmer is averaging 25 yards per reception, with 8 total catches. He's also averaging 7.8 yards per carry on 4 end-around rushes. He's emerging as the Vols greatest big play threat.

Guarantano Showing Improvement:

Last year Guarantano played in 9 games, tallying 997 yards on 86/139 passing, with 4 TDs and 2 Int, and a 7.2 avg/p.

This year, after only 5 games Guarantano is already at 801 yards on 59/93 passing, with 4 TDs and 2 Int, and a 8.6 avg/p.

His completion percentage is up a tick from 62% to 63% so far this season as well.

Jucos Leading the Way in the Defensive Trenches: Emmit Gooden leads the Vols with 4 TFL, and Alexis Johnson is T-2 with 3 TFL.

Darrell Taylor Coming Alive: R-Jr Darrell Taylor's stat line is looking better after the Georgia game, he now has with 3 Sacks and 2 FF on the season.

Linebackers Lead in Tackles: Junior linebackers Daniel Bituli and Darrin Kirkland Jr. lead the Vols in tackles with 26 and 23 respectively. Surprising Sophmore Will Ignont has tallied 18 tackles and is third in the LB group.

Punter U: Joe Doyle is averaging 42.44 yards per punt on 25 attempts, with 9 fair catches, 11 inside the 20, and 5 punts of 50+ yards.

Steady Kicking: Cimaglia is 4/4 of FGs and has made all his XP so far this season.

I'm surprised at Ignont's & London's stats. Palmer has been good on long balls. Taylor, Johnson & Goodwin have impressed me also. Special teams have been solid except for kick and punt returns. I really like our young secondary.

The thing that stands out to me is the ypc for the running backs. Even with Chandler's 85ish yard run taken out, they are all averaging right at 4 ypc or more. I was always coached that anything greater than 3.3 ypc is a good thing. With three downs that equals a first down.

Very nice, OP! Good to see some tangible evidence of progress.

I think the stats accurately relate that we've done well in the kicking game, just lack any explosiveness in the return area of special teams.

The rush stats are padded by the two powder puff games. They're not terrible against WVU, Florida & GA; but not where they need to be and as others have pointed out, the problem is not getting the push we need to gain that critical third down yardage when we have to have it. But at the same time, I think the stats do suggest that maybe Helton hasn't been as patient with the running game as he should be. He hasn't let any one back get the feel for a game and get in a groove outside of Jordan against WVU and that was because he felt he had no choice.

The passing game stats are even more skewed by the two gimme games. What to me is the most concerning stat for this area of offense is the number of receivers catching passes per game. Against UF & UGA only 4 receivers caught passes and that includes Johnson's total 15 yards. The only other receiver thrown to was Byrd and it would have required a pretty good catch to have brought it in. I'm not advocating playing 11 WR like the previous group did, but other than Palmer's long catch, that group didn't establish themselves as a credible threat in those games. Is that the receivers not getting open, or the QB not getting them the ball? I don't know, but it's problematic and isn't helping the line or the running game.

Kirkland being a leading tackler is misleading. I'd be really curious how many of those 23 tackles occurred within 2 yards of the LOS. I would bet fewer than 25%. Linebackers tackling guys 8 yards down field is not a positive stat.

Banks needs to get his not fumble on before he has any chance to supplant Jordan. Jordan is having a good season, he likes to bounce it too much, but he's doing well.

I would prefer if Chandler received the bulk of Jordan's carries, granted with the assumption being that he could handle that load physically. I personally believe that he could, and in my opinion he gives you everything that Jordan gives you with the added benefit that Chandler has the speed to take runs to the house and he hits the hole consistently.

Look no further than 3rd down to find a stat worth talking about. We are around 30% on 3rd down which wears out the D and causes problems on the other 2 downs as well. When your QB cannot throw the ball downfield, whether it be because the Oline or his own downfalls, you are never gonna be any good.

Looks good. But, what does it look like when you break it down to what they have done against qualtity opponents versus the cupcakes.

I believe we need more creative passing on 1st and 2nd downs instead of passing only on 3rd and long most of the time... that would make our running game much more effective.

Its an old line that probably gets used too much most of the time, but I think it fits here. "We re too predictable"

We re predictable on 1st and 2nd down which forces 3rd down to be predictable if you don't succeed.

If we're not able to find a serviceable passing game in short order 20 points is gonna be a monumental feat.

I love Banks enthusiasm and energy but he has to hold onto that ball (I think he has 1/3 of turnovers this season).

We must use off week to replace Calloway on return teams...and reduce his hits that can cause concussion. Reoccurrence is real easy for a few weeks following.

Since JJ Peterson appears to be getting more game ready, I say prep him for OLB. Bituli, Kirkland, Sapp and Ignont are a pretty good core of ILBs.

Chandler has done that while missing almost 2 games. He didn’t play in the cupcake against ETSU and played only a series or 2 against WVU. He needs to play more.

Palmer has a good average, but needs to have more than 8 catches over the next 5 games.

looks like there are a lot of areas to improve...heck, I'd just like to see a pass on first down...:D
