Oh no doubt. He’s still got the ego. He’s telling everyone who will listen at Catholic that Tennessee should win a minimum 8 games this year. I’ve heard that exact thing from two separate people.

He’s also a big source for Austin Price and the VQ staff.
That seems weird. Almost once a podcast they rag on Butch about either lying or his deficiencies as a head coach.

There was zero chance anyone anywhere is getting fired in that situation.

End of year 3 he had gone from 5 to 7 to 9 wins. Coming off a top 5 recruiting class. Picked to win the East. Preseason top 10. National media was picking us as a playoff dark horse.

Ludicrous.
He was at 8 wins at the end of the regular season with multiple blown games, no wins of note, and had had multiple controversies including player conduct issues, a fight with a player, and multiple OL quitting mid season.

It would have been a move that took balls, but wouldn’t have been completely unprecedented.

I just wonder even though it may have been merited being fired after dobbs senior year... how the job would’ve been perceived nationally? I wonder what our candidate pull would look like. You know the media would’ve spun it like we just fired a reasonably successful coach based on his records.

He wanted the Michigan job badly after his first year here when they hired Harbaugh. I think he may have been on their list had Harbaugh turned them down.

I think North Carolina approached him at one point as well - maybe after 2014?

Unc came to him during the 2016 season. He was their top target if fedora got the Baylor or Oregon jobs. Then both fedora and Butch pooped the bed vs instate rivals that's weekend and threw everything off

Fedora is 🚮🚮. I remember when he was a super hot commodity.

Wouldn't that be a self admission that he's a garbage head coach?

"Yeah, I went 4-8 and didn't win a single SEC game before getting fired, but the next guy? He should be able to win 8 with my players."

Didn't Dooley covet the UNC job as well?

We need to stop hiring losers who are ready to bail for easier jobs after having a modicum of success here. Cuonzo did the same thing (although obviously we ended up more than okay there).

Throw that Title IX issue into the equation. Do you still think we would have taken an image hit by cutting him loose?

Better? (This is actually my fantasy football avatar. The rest of the league hates Tennessee)

I really don’t know. I mean he’s the most successful coach here since mid 2000s fulmer and fire him for back to 8-4 season when the last time we went 8-4 was like 10 years prior.

I guess it just depends on the way whoever spins it. I got nuked on here for saying we should’ve fired butch the moment Georgia fired mark richt and hired him. I still stand by that.

Did he borrow Johnny Majors jacket and tie? If so there would be a bottle of Jack Daniels in the pocket. View attachment 170802
I didn't get to watch until last night and I said something similar to my wife. He obviously had that jacket and tie in his office closet, and tied it on his way to the studio. No cufflinks, no lapel pins, no hair to comb... no bs. He comes across as very regular, blue collar, genuine guy.

eh, it doesn't matter. by the end of 2016, i think most doubt was removed. there were signs in 2015. but part of the process, young, whatever...then 2016 was so up and down and up and down, and hten...just down.

i don't blame anyone that thought he deserved another year after 2016.

but i would have fired him after the vandy game that year.

Yea i agree. I would have too. We could’ve had a shot at Richt maybe. (Probably would’ve chose Miami over us but still) i think that was the same year. Not sure tho.

2016 was a bad year to enter the coaching search....UGA, Miami LSU, and several others were on the market. competition would have been really stiff, and while i wanted to fire Butch, i wasn't excited about the prospects of trying to out bid some of the other programs out there.

Yikes. Mullen already has as many (3) 40+ point games as Mac did in his 3 years at UF. They had 9 total between Mac and Champ
