Still confused on this one because that's 6 inches of rubber they're playing on
Natural grass fields are all sand based and have some give to them. That’s the problem with artificial. It just doesn’t give so it’s never going to absorb the shock that natural surfaces do. Even after that rubber, it’s concrete under there.

Turf fields today are nearly identical to natural grass.

Studies are even being done on padded fields where artificial would actually reduce concussion risk as opposed to natural

Not true anymore
Yes it is. There are mounds of research that support it too.

Heat, concussions, lower extremity injuries all go up on artificial. The texas rangers raaised he’ll because they tried to put artificial into their new upcoming stadium. Players hate it.

Is Turf Really a Better Way to Prevent Concussions?
New artificial turfs are causing concussions to decrease in recent studies

There are safer helmets and other protective gear available, but they're expensive. Some schools have a fundraising program to buy the new helmets. Some families buy their own. Prices have come down a little, as awareness grows.

Yep and now reasarch has shifted to the field surface as well. A lot of time and energy going into that aspect along with the helmets used.

Every little bit helps

There’s a thing called a clegg hammer which directly measures shock absorbing rates. Which then measure how high a critical fall is onsaid surface (aka how high you can be when your head hits the ground to get a concussion). Artificial is like 3ft and Natural is like 6. I’m on mobile so i don’t really have time to search but i will later.

On top of just playing on artificial is absolutely miserable in the summer and a study done by ETSU is finding an uptick in lower extenity injuries in Knoxville area since the installation of artificial fields

I say take all the precaution you can without changing the game, and if a man gets CTE, he gets CTE. Comes with the territory.
I actually agree with you on this Chief to some extent. The problem lies with kids and amateurs who aren't getting compensated appropriately or at all for the risk they are taking. Every job has some debilitating qualities, be it sunburns for roofers or sedentary work for office folk. You're supposed to be compensated for that level of damage. If colleges want to roll out life long health insurance policies for football players, then you're on the right track. It scares me that advances in screening are revealing people in their 20s or even late teens with severe CTE already present.

Baseball should never be played on artificial turf they’re complaining for a different reason.

I still remember probably the only time I got my “bell rung”. Of course I was playing football. I was a sophomore in high school. It was helmet to helmet contact. Damn. I was shocked. Really, from a physical sense I was stunned but in thinking about it I guess I was shocked. I don’t think it hurt as much as it just sort of made me feel like I could be vulnerable in ways I hadn’t considered because in the immediate aftermath I didn’t at all feel up to my strength. I think I decided at that point not to go head on with anyone else again.

The thing that stands out to me now about that is, I never told anyone, ever. I didn’t come off the field. I stayed in the game and played on, just trying to avoid head on collisions. I was embarrassed. That was the only reason I didn’t tell anyone and I didn’t want anyone to find out. I wanted to be known as a tough kid. This is the first time I’ve ever shared that story. I don’t guess I’m embarrassed anymore.

If I was a kid today being who I am I think I’d still want to play football. Today kids are taught not to lead with the head and if I had known the why of that back in the early 70’s I probably wouldn’t have experienced that moment of shock. I might have still been stunned but at least I would have understood why.

I don’t think equipment is going to be able to do enough to make the game safe. I think you make the game safer by teaching kids to NOT use their heads, just in case they don't learn that on their own. Jmo.

They say the true fix is to take the helmets off entirely.

I have said for years they should go back to leather helmets with no facemask. Much fewer concussions and many more broken noses. My 83 year old dad said they called you a p***y in his day if you used a facemask.

Changing the subject here..you heard any talk that Pruitt/staff may make a run at Kelly Bryant? I don't like our QB situation going into next season. If we had were able to pull Bryant, with our tailbacks and hopefully an improved o-line with Wright and Morris, I'd like where we're at offensively.

I doubt it, but no i haven’t heard either way. I don’t think Mauer (sp?) is the “QB of the future”, so i think their could be several options teams could look at. With the new 4 game redshirt rule... a broader market for QBs could be open now after the season.
