I think we needed a higher floor guy. I would have been absolutely ecstatic had Gundy actually accepted (much more so than Gruden), Leach, even a Les Miles would have some appeal as a stabilizer, although not ideal. If the Tampa Bay stint had never happened, Schiano coming off rebuilding Rutgers would have fit the profile. I get it, he’s radioactive for many reasons and I don’t regret him not being here.

It's a moot point, but for the sake of argument, other than Leach and Schiano (and the NC State HC), did UT actually have a legitimate chance to hire any of those coaches? Gundy appeared to use the UT interest as leverage to get $/extension, and I'm not even sure Miles would have been/was interested (correct me if I'm wrong). FWIW, I wanted Gundy or Mullen.

There's no quick fix to this program, regardless of who could be the head coach. I think a lot of the anger UT fans have is a result of their unrealistic expectations of where this program is right now. You don't have to like him, but UT fans need to hope Pruitt succeeds, or, in the least, begins to turn this program around, because if he's gone in three years, UT fans are going to be even more dismayed by the slim pickings for HC. I'm not arguing that the coaching staff is omnipotent, but
let's see where this team is at the end of the season, and how we look early next year, before we start questioning this hire.

Guarantano arrived at Tennessee on a wave of optimism. Personally, he was one of the most touted players in the 2016 recruiting class, coming in as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback according to 247Sports’ composite rating, and as a top-100 prospect overall. And the program he signed up for was, finally, on the verge of a full-blown resurgence: The 2016 Vols opened in the top 10 on the heels of a 9-4 finish in 2015, with a senior incumbent behind center and a pair of hyped recruiting classesin 2014-15 poised to bear fruit. Guarantano’s addition as the heir apparent to Joshua Dobbs was just the next logical step toward becoming a perennial SEC East contender.

The subsequent two years have not gone that way, to say the least. The 2016 team failed to make good on the preseason hype, and by the time Guarantano entered the starting lineup for the first time last October, it was for an outfit that was already foundering on its way to an 0-8 finish in conference play; the Volunteers finished last or next-to-last in the SEC in total offense, scoring offense, rushing offense, passing offense, yards per play, first downs, third-down conversions, red-zone conversions, and sacks allowed.

Love the 'my kid is' posts this AM. Been there. Take it from an old guy; grind. Just love, communicate and discipline them through it. It's true that when they marry and have kids they start figuring out that we might have known what we were doing. When the light bulbs go on, that becomes your crowning achievement as parents. Of course by then you probably have moved on to the greatest gift God and your kids can give you - grandkids.

As to our Vols - always darkest before the dawn. Just like above there is a process that will not be circumvented or avoided. We hoped the process would be accelerated by the broad, successful experiences of the staff. We probably overlooked the poor condition of the roster as well as the inexperience at OC. I no longer expect a bowl game. The way the team performed Saturday was pathetic physically and emotionally. They did not want to be there, it showed and it appeared they were in disarray. That's what I want to see strongly improved. Don't try to dominate other SEC teams at physicality because you can't do it with this roster. That will take 3-4 years. Be smarter and unpredictable while playing the most talented guys that give maximum effort. What I keep seeing is tryouts for some players while continuing to use guys that could not get it done in previous seasons with no identity or philosophy on either side of the ball. Those issues start at the top with CJP. Hopefully he is addressing with his staff and roster so that there will be steady improvement for the rest of the season.

Grind.
In my line of work, our extended family is greatly sacrificed due to our location. Bracing myself for the loss of my children in the coming years, and eventually only seeing grandkids for a couple of weeks every two years. 🙁

Of course it’s a moot point, armchair quarterbacking, whatever you want to call it. But I named 4 coaches, two were very interested, one we offered and he stayed at his Alma mater, and we have no idea on the other one, so you can’t chalk it up as “he wouldn’t have come here anyway.” I was a full fledged Mehlen, but I would have preferred him to Pruitt.

As far as your last paragraph, I don’t know what to tell you. I’m going to question the hire until it shows otherwise. But you’re right, nothing to do but be patient.

Again.

I think so as well. I saw too many fans get literally angry at the idea that just making a bowl game this season would be a major accomplishment, with many of them actually thinking we could beat anyone on our schedule other than Bama this season, including UGA and Auburn. This despite every analyst out there saying this team was very thin on SEC talent. I do think we have some decent talent in some of the skill positions, but if you don't have the talent in the trenches, the skill position talent is rendered rather harmless. And with that bad of an OL you have to have a QB with the elusiveness of a Josh Dobbs, which we obviously don't have.

I was guilty myself last season of scoffing at the analysts, such as Booger McFarland, who said 2017 for the Vols would be 'abysmal'. But almost all of them said pretty much the same as they said before this season, that UT would be lucky to get to 6 wins. I wasn't going to ignore that this time, but so many of our fans seemed to think a new coach from the Saban tree would come in and take this roster loaded with hidden SEC talent and immediately challenge UGA for the East.

I appreciate optomism, but apparently there is a fine line between that and delusion.

I said this yesterday and I believe these kids don't know the rule. It sounds like many think they can transfer and play next year and that isn't true unless they graduate. If I am a coach at one of these schools I am bringing in my compliance director to explain this new rule and I bet these defections slow down

I bet many know what they are doing. They are getting advice from somewhere. They aren’t just going to sit out essentially 2 years.

No with the new transfer and redshirt rules they will redshirt this year and be eligible to play next season

Edit: Nvm you are right. Thought that’s how I read it but they still have to sit out unless they’re a graduate.

Interesting that Kingston Harris is still working out on OL as a RG.

I figured Crosby would’ve stuck there but I don’t think he “loves” football. Too good an athlete to not be successful otherwise IMO.
