You may wanna go look how Uga was from the mid 80’s to 2016. Nothing but mediocre with a few good years mixed in. And up until Richt they never had a conference title (he won 2). If you remove every teams dominate stretch they look worse. Remove Bryant and Saban from bama and see how they look a little less greatI agree with most of this. Tennessee in reality is an inferior program to Georgia. 90's are an outlier. Outside of the 89-01 period, the Tennessee program isn't as rich in tradition as what a lot of people would like you to believe. Nobody remotely cares about what happened prior to the 70's.
A couple of things:
I do think the standards have been lowered. We’ve been objectively bad for 15 years. Not only has that been implanted into the national consciousness because it is the most recent results, but a 15 year run is basically 1/8th of the programs history. That’s a big chunk. If you exclude those 15 years, Tennessee still has an 8 or 9 win average. The 90’s were a peak - and an exception.
I don’t know if Pruitt is a championship-caliber coach. I have my doubts. But I think there is also reason to be optimistic. All told, it’s still much more likely that he’s ordinary than extraordinary. Those are just the odds.
Also I think the reality is that Tennessee has never really had to deal with a very good Georgia program. It hurts us more than I think we can understand. The same can be said for Clemson to a certain point as well.
If a player plays in 4 games or less he can still use a redshirt if he has not previously. If a player leaves after playing in 4 games or less it counts as him sitting out the season and he can be immediately eligible for the next year at his new school.
Yes, if he transfers now, he just sits out the rest of this year.
I was discussing this with a friend this morning after being told what happened second hand from a Sapp connection. I wonder if the information Pruitt got was not quite accurate., and he had to smooth that over. Apparently, Sapp didn't refuse to go in the game. He got into a heated discussion with a defensive coach, and then a GA got involved that didn't help matters. It got back to Pruitt. My guess is some players came to Sapp's defense.
If what you were told is true then I see this as win for Pruitt. If Pruitt can tell his guys I was wrong and do right by them, then I think he will get some of the hold-outs to buy inI was discussing this with a friend this morning after being told what happened second hand from a Sapp connection. Heck if you take out spurrier and Meyer from Florida they’re a bad program. But I’m sure you’d argue they’re much better than us lolI agree with most of this. The issue is that I believe Florida will be back to their elite status in short order. Maybe not to the level that Meyer or Spurrier had them at, but to a 9 or 10 win level. So that will make it more difficult when you add in Georgia.Georgia is the new Florida. UT dealt with UF when it was a championship program, so having dual elite teams in the SECE isn't anything new. There is greater parity in the SEC now, and to some degree, that's here to stay. But other programs are rising above it and UT has the resources to do the same. We're the only Big 6 SEC program that has backslid this hard, for this long. It's inexcusable... but it doesn't have to be permanent.
Here's the kicker, though-- we have a window of opportunity. Fulmer is our ticket to getting back to the upper echelons. He's the one with the vision, the passion and the clout to make it happen. When he goes, there go the resources and the drive for greatness within the university. When that window closes-- and it will-- then it's going to be much tougher.
InVOL, let me first apologize to you for some of the things I said, please forgive me, man; also to the rest of VN for burning the place down, all day and all night. I'm VERY optimistic...but, I'm also sick of losing to UF.
I had a big, long post typed out; but, I guess to summarize: I said many times yesterday that the playcalling and personnel decisions were puzzling at times, not good at times. I also said many times that the coaching has to get better. The notion that started this whole mess was the idea Pruitt and Co got outcoached in every facet. I wholeheartedly disagree.
Imo, 6 turnovers that led to 24 pts, and squandered great scoring chances for us and stomped out ANY momentum or rally we had in us, along with the blocking, and not just the OL's, but TE's, H- Backs, and RB's...THAT'S what got us blown out. Wouldn't have mattered what play was called.
InVOL, Go Big Orange, man!
Aren’t we just due for a damn game where the weird bounces go our way? I mean, we could really use it.
Doc, enjoy your posts, as well, and have nothing but respect for you, man.You need to refine your debating skills, dude. You come off as loud and biased. Invol is a respected poster. I enjoy reading some of your posts, but you all are never going to agree on this one. Why not move on?
I don't know what the rule is but this is what the ESPN article claims: "A new rule allows players to play in four games without burning a redshirt season, allowing McCleskey to be eligible to play in 2019 without being required to graduate. "
Thing is, it's not the players fault either. Whenever half of them should be at Cincinnati, and find themselves trying to compete in the SEC, how much can we truly expect out of them, you know. And I'm saying criticizing this staff having to deal with these players is stupid. The blame is on the bunch of guy who came to UT to play school not football. I think they were sold on a country club atmosphere, and I believe they resent Pruitt demanding focus on the thing they were brought here to do.
