Bad hire

The onside kick was a great call, we had the numbers.

The fourth down calls were a first time HC getting overwhelmed by a situation. The game was not over. Needed to punt and calm things down. Not turn the game into a boat race.

In perfect UT vs UF fashion, we had 4 guys going up for the ball on the onside kick, and the one UF player comes down with it. I also don’t have a problem with the 4th down calls either. In both situations, our defense was playing well at the time. Their points were coming off turnovers, not big plays given up by the defense

Dude, Pruitt inherited a bad team the same way that Mark Helfrich inherited a good team. Give it some time before you make your verdict. I know that “it takes time” is the last thing any Vol fan wants to hear, but unfortunately thanks to terrible AD leadership for the past 10 years we are in a helluva hole.

Our defense was playing well, which is why we needed to punt and calm this game down.

If your defense is playing well you can afford a gamble to keep the drive going. Needed a momentum shift and some life pumped into team. A 4th down conversion could have done that. A punt wouldn’t have. Agree to disagree.

Let's look at the results so far for some other newly hired coaches:

Texas A+M - Jimbo Fisher: 2-2 (0-1 SEC)

Nebraska - Scott Frost: 0-3

UCLA - Chip Kelly: 0-3

Florida State - Willie Taggart 2-2 (0-2 ACC)

Arkansas - Chad Morris 1-3 (0-1 SEC)

Arizona - Kevin Sumlin 2-2 (1-0 PAC12)

And one NFL team just because:
Oakland Raiders - Jon Gruden 0-2

4 of the coaches above were high on the list of many people on this site and their results don't look any better than CJP. Remember that most of these postions come open because a team has had some bad seasons. It's not like CJP showed up to a disciplined and loaded team with on field leaders. I think we saw both some good and poor coaching decisions tonight, but I liked that CJP was willing to take some chances (onside kick, 4th down attempts). Pruitt may turn out to be a bad hire, but lets give him some time and hope that once he has his own players on the field we start winning and he's our coach for a long time. Who would want to go through another coaching search? Do you think people will be knocking down the door to come here to be the 5th coach in 10 years? This is going to be another hard year to be a UT fan, but lets not start burning mattresses just yet.
But those are teams that suck. We're Tennessee. Apples and oranges.

Your offense is struggling. You punt, play good D, and try to change field position.

Check the guy the stadium is named after.

When we lose to KY and Candy will we still use the talent excuse?

It’s not just talent, there are talented players on the team. The upperclassmen have been developed terribly by the previous staff. It’s super hard to shake those habits. Pruitt is a different kind of coach, he’s hard nosed, they aren’t used to this. Case in point with Sapp refusing to go into the game.
