This is true. That said, JG needs to improve A LOT and quickly. He still isn't making great reads or decisions. He's locking in on Callaway too quickly. He makes line calls so we can never be completely sure when the OL makes a mental mistake or it is him. OL play did seem a little better when KC entered with the 1's.We need JG and the receivers to gel and for the team to feel confident more than we need Chryst to get reps.
Not the way it works. Coaches saw both all summer long and through fall camp...made the decision that JG is better, gives the team a better chance to win. And nothing that JG has done through 2 weeks (71% completions, 152 QB rating, has made all the throws and no turnovers) has changed any of that. They clearly made the right choice based on what we’ve seen thus far.JG played good. But we really need to see more of Keller Chryst to see if he can take over if our oline collapses and JG gets hurt. What if he started next game to see how he does? What if he was to play better? Thoughts?
If he just can't get it mentally... if his decisions and reads to not continue to improve and improve at a greater pace... then it makes perfect sense to sit him. He has to be worth the investment of time and patience. He's a 3rd year player. He should be picking up blitzes better than he did vs ETSU among other things. If ETSU's coaching staff can recognize JG's weaknesses and exploit them... what will better opponents do?Keller is gone after this year. JG still has at least a couple of years left. Setting JG makes no sense to me. Keller can do the job but JG needs the reps.
To the extent that's true... then the investment may eventually be in Shrout if JG doesn't come along mentally. His ability to read D's and make good decisions isn't where a 3rd year player should be.I totally understand your point. My point is JG will not improve his QB play sitting on the bench. We are not going to win the SEC this year. We need to plan and play for the future.
You're hanging that on one drive? He needs to make better decisions and reads. If he doesn't and is still "our guy" then UT may suffer its first 9 loss season.Yet we had a 17 play drive against WVU in week 1. BTW jg started that game and lead that drive as well as all the other Meaningful drives this year. He’s our guy.

I haven't said anything about last year. It is THIS year. JG has improved but he hasn't been great against a middling Big 12 D and an FCS team. One good drive and the O didn't produce much of anything else against WVU. Part of that is the OL but JG STILL isn't making great decisions and reads. Most of the D's left on the schedule are better than the two UT has played. Ultimately when coaches talk about "managing" the O... they're talking about doing the things that put points on the board. For the QB that's making reads before and after the snap, decision making, understanding situational football (like not throwing a 3 yard completion on a 3rd and 12),... the mental part. UT's 14 pts vs WVU was anemic. Three of the early scores vs ETSU were produced by D/ST's.We’ve only had 2 games this year, what else am I supposed to hang it on. Or would you all like me to hang my opinion on everything froM last year like you all instead of looking at the now like it should be.
The question isn't KC. He is what he is and isn't likely to be a whole lot more. So either JG gets better by playing and being coached up or he doesn't and they have to go another route. if they pull the plug soon then it will probably be KC. If it is later in the season then it could be Shrout. The big question is whether or not JG can "get" the mental part.Keller had all Spring to beat out JG for the QB spot and didn’t do it.
If Pruitt thought he’d be the better QB, wouldn’t he be playing more instead of handing the ball off in garbage time?
He survived the beating last year, what would make you think he wouldn't this year? Most don't want him to succeed anyway. 71% completion percentage and 152 An rating atillbisnt good enough I guess.

um, b/c we want to win and at least to me, Chryst looks like the better leaderTerrible, illogical idea.To this point JG has done nothing to lose the starting job. He's completing over 70% of his passes on the season with 8.7 yards per attempt and no turnovers. It would be foolish to start Chryst and hurt JG's confidence when he's played relatively well to this point.
I understand giving Chryst some reps. He needs to be ready to be the guy if JG were to get hurt or play poorly in SEC play. Until one of those two happens (hopefully neither does), Chryst is nothing more than a solid, experienced backup who will come in for mop up duty. I seriously do not get why so many Vol fans want a senior with a low ceiling starting over a sophomore with a high ceiling who also happens to be playing relatively well.
He just looks more confident in general. JG has that deer in the headlights look nearly every time I see him. If I can notice it from the TV screen then i'm sure players can as well. And this isn't too surprising considering experience brings confidence and KC has 3 years more experienceYea you sure can tell that by a bunch of hand offs and three passes.
Not what the people around the program say. I don’t think most people who have watched see it that way.He just looks more confident in general.
