I would like to see more Keller

Keller is gone after this year. JG still has at least a couple of years left. Setting JG makes no sense to me. Keller can do the job but JG needs the reps.

We need JG and the receivers to gel and for the team to feel confident more than we need Chryst to get reps.
This is true. That said, JG needs to improve A LOT and quickly. He still isn't making great reads or decisions. He's locking in on Callaway too quickly. He makes line calls so we can never be completely sure when the OL makes a mental mistake or it is him. OL play did seem a little better when KC entered with the 1's.

He needs to distribute the ball better and make the right run game calls. He needs to make big strides in pre-snap reads. Too many are laying everything at the feet of the OL's or alternately hinting at a QB change. Neither is productive. The OL needs to gel. The O as a whole needs to gel. Everyone... including JG... needs to play significantly better.

JG played good. But we really need to see more of Keller Chryst to see if he can take over if our oline collapses and JG gets hurt. What if he started next game to see how he does? What if he was to play better? Thoughts?
Not the way it works. Coaches saw both all summer long and through fall camp...made the decision that JG is better, gives the team a better chance to win. And nothing that JG has done through 2 weeks (71% completions, 152 QB rating, has made all the throws and no turnovers) has changed any of that. They clearly made the right choice based on what we’ve seen thus far.
Chryst will get his snaps where they can get him in there when the game isn’t in doubt so he can be ready as JG’s backup.

They competed, JG won the battle (easily) and now he’s the starter....so he’s the one who starts. Chryst is the backup. That’s it.

If he just can't get it mentally... if his decisions and reads to not continue to improve and improve at a greater pace... then it makes perfect sense to sit him. He has to be worth the investment of time and patience. He's a 3rd year player. He should be picking up blitzes better than he did vs ETSU among other things. If ETSU's coaching staff can recognize JG's weaknesses and exploit them... what will better opponents do?

Youngstown St was only down 28-14 to WVU midway through the 3rd qtr. They had a better yd/play vs WVU than UT. My point is that WVU still hasn't proven they have a credible D... yet they shut UT and JG down for most of the game.

JG is getting his shot... but the clock is ticking.

I totally understand your point. My point is JG will not improve his QB play sitting on the bench. We are not going to win the SEC this year. We need to plan and play for the future.

To the extent that's true... then the investment may eventually be in Shrout if JG doesn't come along mentally. His ability to read D's and make good decisions isn't where a 3rd year player should be.

Yet we had a 17 play drive against WVU in week 1. BTW jg started that game and lead that drive as well as all the other Meaningful drives this year. He’s our guy.
You're hanging that on one drive? He needs to make better decisions and reads. If he doesn't and is still "our guy" then UT may suffer its first 9 loss season.

We’ve only had 2 games this year, what else am I supposed to hang it on. Or would you all like me to hang my opinion on everything froM last year like you all instead of looking at the now like it should be.

I haven't said anything about last year. It is THIS year. JG has improved but he hasn't been great against a middling Big 12 D and an FCS team. One good drive and the O didn't produce much of anything else against WVU. Part of that is the OL but JG STILL isn't making great decisions and reads. Most of the D's left on the schedule are better than the two UT has played. Ultimately when coaches talk about "managing" the O... they're talking about doing the things that put points on the board. For the QB that's making reads before and after the snap, decision making, understanding situational football (like not throwing a 3 yard completion on a 3rd and 12),... the mental part. UT's 14 pts vs WVU was anemic. Three of the early scores vs ETSU were produced by D/ST's.

I'm not trying to offend you but QB's impact O play in ways far beyond throwing the ball. Their decisions make plays go or not go in ways that aren't obvious. A good pre-read can result in a 60 yd TD on a slant against a blitz. A bad one even if the blitz is picked up by the OL makes the play fail and look disorganized. OL calls by the QB can make a running play go or fail. JG didn't lead the O to score many points last year. He didn't look greatly improved vs WVU in game management except for the one drive. He looked better after the delay vs ETSU but you have to account for competition.

I'm not calling JG "hot garbage" as someone did the OL (I'm pretty sure they're hard working, dedicated Vols too). I AM saying that he throws well but lacks in other areas in ways that must improve.

Keller had all Spring to beat out JG for the QB spot and didn’t do it.

If Pruitt thought he’d be the better QB, wouldn’t he be playing more instead of handing the ball off in garbage time?
The question isn't KC. He is what he is and isn't likely to be a whole lot more. So either JG gets better by playing and being coached up or he doesn't and they have to go another route. if they pull the plug soon then it will probably be KC. If it is later in the season then it could be Shrout. The big question is whether or not JG can "get" the mental part.

We don’t have the luxury of giving experience to both QBs. KC has more experience already. When JG has enough reps in you’ll see the other QBs. If we start fast and JG look good I expect him to play little more than to mid Q3.
As we bring in less experienced linemen you don’t want JG hurt.

He survived the beating last year, what would make you think he wouldn't this year? Most don't want him to succeed anyway. 71% completion percentage and 152 An rating atillbisnt good enough I guess.

I want the kid to succeed but last year we went what like 4 games without a touchdown?

He only has thrown 1 passing touchdown in 2 games. Which was on 4th down from the 1 to DWA. Until he proves he can throw TDs consistently he needs to keep improving.

We cannot beat SEC competition with stats like that, you have to be able to put your receivers in places to score. Granted I know he made some good throws last game bit his receivers were like 10yds ahead of the corner every time and he still didn't manage to throw a TD ball although yes it was close to the goal line. We need to be able to finish.

JG has been given the reigns and is in control of his playing time and future. JG has the opportunity to be the guy, but if he doesn't we have a larger issue of who to play. KC is the short term solution or WM or possibly burning the redshirt on Shrout.

I say that we need to let JG get his reps and build on continuity with the WR's and his confidence. We should know by mid season if a change needs to be made.

Against UTEP, I hope we get up early and we get to see CK get some playing time and actually throw the ball.

Also had multiple drives in the WVU game where he had them in 3rd and short and the running backs couldn't pick up the 2-3 yards to keep the drive going. Works both ways.

JG is the quarterback the rest of the season unless he gets hurt. That's done. We can argue about whether there will be another competition in the offseason, but that's got nothing to do with this season. It's his job and the competition wasn't even particularly close. When a competition isn't close, you don't just throw the other guy out there and suddenly hopes he's figured out the things he consistently failed at prior to that.

Terrible, illogical idea.To this point JG has done nothing to lose the starting job. He's completing over 70% of his passes on the season with 8.7 yards per attempt and no turnovers. It would be foolish to start Chryst and hurt JG's confidence when he's played relatively well to this point.

I understand giving Chryst some reps. He needs to be ready to be the guy if JG were to get hurt or play poorly in SEC play. Until one of those two happens (hopefully neither does), Chryst is nothing more than a solid, experienced backup who will come in for mop up duty. I seriously do not get why so many Vol fans want a senior with a low ceiling starting over a sophomore with a high ceiling who also happens to be playing relatively well.
um, b/c we want to win and at least to me, Chryst looks like the better leader

Yea you sure can tell that by a bunch of hand offs and three passes.
He just looks more confident in general. JG has that deer in the headlights look nearly every time I see him. If I can notice it from the TV screen then i'm sure players can as well. And this isn't too surprising considering experience brings confidence and KC has 3 years more experience

Playing Chryst should only be done if Guarantano is making stupid mistakes and costing us games. So far he hasn't. Next year the team has a chance to make a big jump, and having an experienced QB with a full season under his belt would help tremendously, especially since our O-line will very likely be better next year.

I would like to see Keller play 2-3 quarters on Saturday because I don't think JG will last the season vs sec defenses and our o line.

Not what the people around the program say. I don’t think most people who have watched see it that way. 🤷‍♂️
