Says he is holding on the ball too long.

Tyson Helton talks UT quarterback play

I agree that he can hold it for too long. He wants to make the play. It's better to throw it away than risk turning it over. There are times when the risk is worth it, but those are when it's close in the waning minutes of a potential game winning drive and only a touchdown will do. Otherwise, throw it away and avoid the sack.

He appears to still struggle with pre and post snap reads. He also isn't distributing the ball well enough. Callaway has 11 receptions. Next highest is Palmer with 4 and Murphy with 3 from JG.

Like last year, he struggles with his progressions, partially due to holding the ball too long, but mostly due to the o-line being hot garbage on 75% of plays.

With this O-line, holding the ball for 1.5 seconds is too long so there is that
The OL hasn't been horrible in pass protection and we can't know for sure how much of that pressure is because of JG holding the ball rather than making a good pre snap read and hitting a quick pattern. He has to get better quickly. If he doesn't, don't be surprised if he's replaced.

Lol Kongbo & JG, two of the most hated players on VolNation who have done nothing but commit themselves to this new staff & taken everything in stride. JG has held his own the last two games & is looking really good. Get the ball out quick hitting Callaway while having <1.5 seconds to make his reads before getting drilled behind that line? He's a baller.

Or.... maybe the OL is "hot garbage" because he's not reading D's well and getting the ball out. QD didn't have a bunch of sacks last year. JG did. Bray had very few sacks after the OL was called "hot garbage" with Simms starting. QB's have a lot more to do with OL play than most realize.

Who, and be specific, "hates" either one of those guys? CORRECT criticism is NOT hatred.

ETSU's paltry d-line punched through our o-line, a second after the snap on several plays. It wouldn't matter if JG was better at reading defenses or not in those cases.

The QB is responsible for making line calls and recognizing where pressure is likely to come from as well as where the holes in coverage will be after the ball is snapped. So yes, it matters if JG makes good pre-snap reads.

I am not absolving the OL of all problems. Some of that was completely on them. Some of it though wasn't.

JG does not have to get better quickly, he’s been fine so far this year in the limited throws he’s made. So far he’s 27-36 on the year with no interceptions and a couple TD’s. He’s in no danger of losIng the starting job, I don’t know why you would say that.

The O did not produce against a WVU D that is likely not as good as UT made them look. He threw the ball well vs ETSU but his ability to throw has never been in question. It his reads and decisions remain questionable until HE proves they're not. UT out-athleted ETSU but there were still a lot of problems. UT's O really didn't look good early and it wasn't all on the OL like you and others have suggested.

If you want to talk stats then consider that UT has played a middling P5 D and an FCS D and are currently 12th in passing in the SEC. They're tied for last in TD passes. One of those was KC in only 3 attempts. Among SEC starters, JG is 11th in yardage, 9th in yds/attempt, last in TD passes, and 9th in passer rating.

The O has to start being effective behind him. He's much closer to being replaced than you imagine.

The center is responsible for calling line plays and I don't know if any of our QBs have the permission to change plays at the LOS. The QB needs to be able to read defenses and let the backs WRs and TEs run a hot route. A lot of things need to be cleaned up on the OL.

Your still treating JG like this is last year. It’s been two games and the kids only had 36 throws. So of course his stats are gonna be low. He’s thrown no picks this year so you can’t say his decision making is regressing. He had a nice play in Saturday where he looked off his first read and then threw the deep ball, so I see some progression in his reads: If any one is in danger of being replaced it’s the offensive line players. Talking stats- our line had 16 run plays of 0 yards against WVU. Two in the first drive against ETSU. That is the problem, you can’t be efficient as a QB when your line is givIng up that many no gain runs. It takes away any and all balance you might have. And despite all that JG was still 19-25.
