Jahmir Johnson, who graded out as the second-best lineman vs. WVU, could see snaps at right tackle, while Riley Locklear and K’Rojhn Calbert will get reps at guard after neither player saw a single snap in the opener. Which leads me to …

The next two weeks are huge for Calbert’s development, IMO. The staff is very high on his potential and physicality. But the 6-foot-5, 326-pound redshirt freshman hasn’t played much football in the last four years. He’s still very raw, especially when it comes to picking up the game mentally. Yes, Tennessee will pummel both ETSU and UTEP, but these tuneup games could be critical for Calbert’s development if the staff truly believes he will help the team later this season. Brandon Kennedy’s injury has opened up an opportunity for several players — with Calbert or Carvin having the most upside of any options. But Calbert needs to play. If he doesn’t get a lot of burn over the next two weeks, it’s hard to see him suddenly contributing against Georgia, Auburn or Alabama.

both Shawn Shamburger and Theo Jackson deserve — and likely will receive — a long took tomorrow. Shamburger has battled inconsistencies and poor practice habits, but he’s had a strong week of work the last few days and appears to in line to get plenty of snaps at the nickel — including real run with the 1s. After not playing a single defensive snap in Week 1, that’s big a development. As for Jackson, he played 14 snaps on defense against WVU, but that number should double tomorrow, too.

Another defensive backup in line for an added workload is Emmitt Gooden. The JUCO transfer has as much upside as any lineman in the interior and is pushing Shy Tuttle, Alexis Johnson and Kyle Phillips for snaps. The bonus with Gooden is his versatility. He can play the nose or slide over as 3 or 5-technique.
We discussed it on the podcast, but two starters who need bounce back games are Nigel Warrior and Daniel Bituli. Both had openers they’d like to forget. I will be curious how Tennessee rotates its inside linebackers tomorrow, as neither Bituli, Darrin Kirkland Jr. or Quart’e Sapp graded out well vs. WVU. Does Will Ignont get a look at all?

Shamburger, Jackson and Ignont have been inconsistent in practice, but they have a higher ceiling than they've shown. Getting them up to game speed will be a big help.
Yep. I don't see any of them moving up the depth chart though until they are more consistent in practice. I think cjp sent some messages this week.

We'll see how it translates in the rotations going toward

Would be nice to see some guys like Shamburger and Jackson come on strong and earn more time moving forward.

I’m hoping we see Deandre Johnson start stealing more reps from Kongbo too.

Calbert and Carvin coming along would help us shore up the interior as well. Those are some big dudes. I’m also interested to see how much work Jamir Johnson gets at OT.

The next two weeks won’t be the best games, but it will definitely be interesting to keep an eye on how we develop our depth.

Is this an effort thing?
maybe. depends on how you interpret "consistency", which is what CJP says is lacking from some guys.

i think these next two weeks are really important for a lot of guys. we're gonna need contributions from alotta different folks. and guys like Ignot, Sham, Labruzaz, Kenneth George, not to mention guys on the DL that are a little down the depth chart....

so yeah, you hate to put that pressure on some of them, but the reality is, we need them all to practice like they're going to start. if you have real competition in practice, guys like Micha probably don't see the field. and i hate to pick on him, because you could argue the same for bituli and warrior as well based on how they played Saturday....anyway, long story short, who's pushing these guys during the week? right now you have to assume the competition level, while it may have improved, isn't where it needs to be accross the board.

i think at O line, RB, QB and WR we've had probably the most competition top to bottom.
