I think some of your fans have done a flip flop. You were too confident in pre-season, which is common with new coaches. Fans underestimate how hard it is to come in and organize a program and get college players to understand new schemes. That was obvious with your defense against a very good passing team. I also thought WVU defense played way better than anybody expected them to.

Now you're underestimating how much the team will improve as the season goes on. They're on the steep part of the learning curve and by the latter half will execute a lot better. Georgia's inexperienced defense is in the same place right now. Shutting out Austin Peay looked good on paper, but our defense didn't look good to me. They should be better later in the year, but this weekend against USCe could go bad for UGA. If that happens, our fan base will over react too I guess.
Agreed. after we win the next two people will be back saying we have a shot at beating some good teams.

Most likely
I don't know. Vol fans have more resiliency( :) ) than any fan base I've encountered. They can take the most minute positive from the most dire circumstances. Now they might not show for games but I expect VN to be buzzing with everything from doom and gloom to 15-0 for 2019.

Yep. After we win the next 2 and are at 2-1 people will be talking about how Florida doesn’t stand a chance.

If we can straighten some things out these next two games I'm gonna go ahead and say they have no chance. That being said...our DBs will have to become at least average SEC players overnight and I doubt that happens.

Ur just mad I'm going back to LA Saturday until Christmas and have 7 tinder dates lined up 😎 they're going to be disappointed when I'm not the dude in my profile picture tho
Or the chick...depending on which profile. 😉

Not quite what I said, but ok
One joke at Peterson's expense and a few comments about his contribution expectations this year doesn't exactly constitute "giving up."

Not directed towards anyone specifically. Just saw some stuff in his thread that sounded like people were ready to write him off since he didn't come to UT in-shape coupled with the fact that he had grade issues.
Anyone thinking that is being ridiculous. I don't know what you put, Nick, so there ya have it. My apologies as I did not mean to make it seem like I was attacking you.

As for my expectations for Peterson this season, I am not in the crowd thinking he will do a lot this year. Gonna be a while before he makes a huge contribution to our defense if it happens this year. Missing summer and fall practice really hurt him development-wise so anything from him this year is gravy.

A lot of people project realistic expectations as negativity.

JJ hasn’t been working out and has had a hard time getting through his coursework. It’s going to be a tough adjustment given he will have to get in shape, acclimate to his classes and then learn the defensive system.

It’s why when he got in I said he’s very likely to be a 4 game redshirt (unless he comes in and blows away all expectations.) It’s not the end of the world. He can be a difference maker for us in November. Maybe even sooner!

Definitely a strong candidate for a 4-game redshirt. Wouldn't surprise me if he hasn't already been told he was.

My critique on the critique was about numbers. I didn't feel like "people" were dismissing Peterson. It was more like "person" at best.

It's a peeve of mine I will never win. "All of VN," "all you guys," "everyone," "everyone on here" are all way overused. It's almost never as many people as the pronouns suggest. It's hyperbole.

It's often made worse by some of the arguments between two or three posters that can go on for pages that make it look like more people than it is. Sorry for drifting too far off topic.
I totally agree. It bothers me too when literally everyone on VN does that.

JJ Peterson had a workout program, access to one of the best HS facilities in the South and a HS coach who was expected to help him achieve his target goals. But he came in very out of shape. No point RSing him-- nobody expects him to be around four years. He'll play as soon as they can bring him up to game speed, then manage his PT.
Just gotta hope he doesn’t pull a hanmmy or something.

I totally get it. We're all fans here. If I say Tim Jordan is going to make us forget John Kelly by mid-season, I'll stack up "likes" and high fives all around. Throw out a negative theoretical without anything substantial, and people get riled up. I do it too, I'm sure.

So... Tim Jordan is going to make us forget John Kelly by mid-season.
You would also have plenty of people telling you to slow your roll. It works both ways. I don’t really buy the whole “anybody that says anything negative gets picked on” narrative. Positive comments get the same kickback from negative, excuse me, realistic people

I believe I'm very objective, but not viewed that way.
Imo you’re viewed more as being objective now than you were a couple years ago. The reason is, if you have a negative opinion now you state it and move on, whereas in the past you would State it repeatedly.

I still hold to the premise that it isn’t the actual negative comments that get so much backlash (although there will always be some) it’s the frequency and voracity of said negative comments.

Exactly, and it helps if you sweeten your sour a little bit. People swallow it easier.

For example, "I know he's got time to get things right, but this whole Peterson thing isn't playing out well so far."
