My only complaint from a coaching perspective is about helton’s playcalling. We were throwing with ease on them and he kept trying to run the ball in really inconvenient situations. I think the defense would have looked a little better if we didn’t keep giving them the ball back

We had so much success throwing to the left and then seemed to abandon it?!

I think in a number of those situations,Helton was expecting a blitz so called the run plays. Our TE’s didn’t block very well at all. The missed screen was a timely call that might have scored, but execution was off. I agree running London twice was not a good call.

I don’t think we were a poorly coached team at alll last week.

I think the coaches expected better execution based on practice and didn’t think some guys would revert back.

They will learn.

I think game management was really well done.

I liked the play calling except for the two runs to London at the end of the second quarter.

Penalties were down. Zero turnovers.

I would grade the coaches higher than the players on this one.

Interesting that you mention grades because I was messing with that this morning. Disclaimer: I'm no expert.

So here are my grades for the game last Saturday. I watched and re-watched, listened to all the interviews and this is what I came up with. If you have a different take (likely) just copy the list and change the grades.

QB – B
RB – C+
WR – B
TE – C
OL – D
P – D
LS – B
K – C
H – B
DL – C-
ILB – C-
OLB – D
CB – D
S –D
KR – D
PR – D

OC – D
DC – F
ST – D
UT - F

That’s not a great report card lol

Yeah think Helton can improve on some of the play calling. Defense was giving us the intermediate throws all game. I’m betting he watched the film this week and knows he can get better there.

That was also his first game as a REAL OC so he’ll get better as he goes imo

I'm wondering what the holder did to get a B

I honestly don’t believe I could put Warrior back on the field after seeing his play last Saturday. His effort was pathetic. Abernathy just looks lost, takes horrible angles, and can’t tackle. The older dudes are a mess. Alontae and Flowers at least tried hard
As much as I hate to admit it I totally agree with this. I had real high hopes for Warrior this year. I know it's only one game but his lack of desire to tackle is very very concerning.

What does Tim Jordan have to do to get a solid B? Lynch versus Saints in the playoffs kind of run?

It's not Tim Jordan; it's the running back group. Our rushing offense after week 1 is ranked #94 in both yards gained and yards/attempt. Without Jordan we really didn't have anything but in general 129 yards on 38 carries for 3.39 yards per attempt for our rushing offense doesn't seem good. I skewed the grade up only because of Jordan.

Let me rephrase my earlier comment. We made a bunch of errors last week in assignments. It’s obviously a sign during any transitional period. We are running a new O and D, it’s not unusual for there to be so many busts. I just figured we would be able to play a complete competitive game against WVU. I was wrong

If I may, the above post is a much better way to frame it.

At the risk of "piling on," you took a nugget about broken tackles--one of the few bright stats from Saturday--and told everyone what a horrible thing it actually is. Post after post after post was negative.

Maybe you can forgive a few folks from thinking maybe you've gone a little too dark. But again, the quoted post above seems a better tack.

JMO FWIW and all that.

I’m not trying to be a dick, but the guy didn’t even try to help us win. He’s too talented to play with that kinda effort

I also stated how awesome he played. My concern was injury.

FSU isn’t in need of a rebuild. Taggart had one good year at USF and lands Oregon. Then a bad year at Oregon and landed FSU. I met the man. Wasn’t impressed but he keeps upgrading. He’ll usually smears cupcakes and loses to good teams.
I always thought he sounded and acted like a pure idiot, and until that one good year at USF, it seemed like just about everybody else in T-Bay thought he was an idiot too.

"Coach T dri dat bus" was a huge Sports Animal joke..especially on Ron and Ian and The Big Dog. They made fun of him unmercifully.

I'm not putting him in the lack of talent group. He's got it and he showed it last year. I don't know if he doesn't want to buy in to Pruitt or not. I really don't know what it is. Maybe he just had a bad day and needs a pass this game. He can't continue playing like that though. He just can't.

Wow espnu guys (first team} actually said Tennessee looked a lot better than FSU in their debuts

Did you watch FSU? Not only not did they lose bad but looked undisciplined and sloppy doing it. Talent is no excuse there. Jimbo is elite recruiter.

TN lost but it was players not executing more than poor coaching.

I'm sort of taking Pruitt & Fulmer at their word. I think we have a good team but we didn't play well. All kinds of reasons for that. Pruitt said we have talent and want-to but need know-how. Fulmer said we have a reasonably good football team. That's still my position until they change theirs. I think we have a good football team but we need to play like it. So we have a lot of upside, hopefully.

Vols looked like a very poorly coached team Sat. It looked no different than the Butch era. Pretty bad for a coaching staff with so many lauded accomplishments and that cost a fortune.
Apparently you've never coached anything in your life. It takes more than 8 months to change a culture in someone. There has been a lazy mindset throughout this program since Butch fired Dave Lawson. You can't completely change your body to SEC ready in 8 months of hard workouts no matter who you are, when for the last 3 years you've worked out on your own for the most part. Let CJP establish the culture, build the foundation, then in 3 years you can say what you want.

Pissing and moaning about it now is the worst thing you can do, gives our fanbase a bad rap and there are recruits and family of recruits that see this type of attitude on these boards. If Tennessee football is so miserable to you that you want to hate on everything about the program, I would recommend finding a new program to root for.

His wife feels the same way.
