We tried to temper your expectations

Still think if we are healthy by the Florida game we beat them. Next 2 games we get to tune up the mistakes plus not face another Heisman first round NFL QB just Felipe Franks. There were flashes on offense after coming out scared as hell for a waste of a first qtr. This will be the one W no one was giving us a shot at.

That is the popular premise. This thought of.... Last year we had talent and no real coach; This year we have a real coach and no talent... has me dubious

I've said all along we were talent challenged.

If you are so mentally weak, that the manner another fan chooses to cheer for their team causes you problems, then maybe cheering for a team isn't for you.

And so what if I expect to win? Doesn't mean I accept the losses or mediocrity that the program had been mired in thr last 10 years any less than you. It just means that I don't want to be pessimistic about something I enjoy.

You guys that cloak yourself in this "realist" title to me are like the guy that got his heart broke and are so scared to take a chance again.

I have failed at plenty of things in my life, but refuse to take let it stop me from trying something new or taking a chance.. on anything.

We get one shot at this life and I'm gonna enjoy it. I'm sorry my positivity has kept us from getting a good coach, the choices that the AD had made for hires, the choices the BOT, had made for AD, the Haslams using UT like their personal plaything. I'll try to do better.

And for the record, how has my positivity directly caused you problems? Did I accidentally spill some on you and get your hopes up once, but you ended up disappointed and couldn't handle the emotion it caused? Let me know and I'll try to avoid getting any on you next time.

Edit - and for the record, I don't talk a lot of smack, usually give my opinion on the team to other vol fans. The trams settle it on the field and the tram with better players or coaching usually win. I don't have to thump my chest to others to feel good about the Vols.

I remember years in the Dickey, Majors, and Fulmer eras where I was honestly confident we would win every game. I knew we wouldn't, but we had teams during those eras that were solid and could win just about any given Saturday if things went our way. These are not those times.

Yeah, I'm mentally weak and maybe cheering for a team isn't for me.. blah, blah, blah. good grief.

Can we talk about the talent gap when it comes to the defense?
I understand completely the struggles for the DBs. Are we not talented (better than WV) at LB or DL?

So you're the only one that remembes those days? I was cheering right along with you. Yes, it would be nice to have that feeling again.

But me being optimistic doesn't cause problems for anyone except those that choose to be miserable.

If your last name isn't Haskam, Thorton, Edgeron, then how you cheer for a team means Zilch. We have no say in the hiring, firing process. The Schiano hire was the outlier. That was unprecedented and may never happen again.

But I still can't make the connection how me being optimistic and wanting to enjoy something causes fans like you problems?

How does that work exactly?

Errybody always trying to “SAVE” people. Was 29 when the Vols broke through for a NC. Leading up to that, encountered disappointment in the 70’s, 80’s and almost all the 90’s...nobody tried to TEACH me how to handle it...all of us just did. Get over yourselves.

Our cbs weren’t looking back because THEY WERE GETTING RUN PASSED and were having to put their heads down to catch up. I don’t think it’s a fair criticism to compare to last year, bc last year there were some obvious 50/50 balls in the air where the cb was right there but failed to turn around. I didn’t see that happen at all yesterday. I did however see safetys playing more aggressively coming over the top looking for pics. We should have had one for sure, maybe two. I think we will see that a lot more going forward. That is a staple of a CJP defense. It was nice to see a forced fumble and recovery though.

And some guy at Alabama did. And he improved them statistically as well.

Pruitt left Bama twice to take promotions.

Left for FSU to become DC. Left for TN to become head coach. the

Smart worked with him previously and had the opportunity to retain him when he took over the Bulldogs and chose not to.

After 2 or 3 exchanges with a poster, I give up the ghost. It's pointless to belabor a point with knuckleheads willing to argue until the late hours of the morning to say they won the point. If you want to do that with someone, I highly recommend Butchna. He will argue the horns off a goat if you keep replying to him.

With a few of you, I'd just rather yell, "Hey, you win. I have a headache. Leave me alone, will you?" I had a wife like that. Wall to wall lip. Not even conceding would shut her up.

The only exchanges we have had were you telling me that fans like me are the problem, without backing it up with even one example.

That's all I am wanting. Show me 1 example of where me being optimistic has caused you or the program problems. Don't think that's asking too much since that was the cornerstone of your original post where you quoted me.

Wonderful. A guy who won't accept "you win" as a concession. All I need now is ReaderVol dropping in to drop a "Butch is great, Butch is good, now we thank him for our food" comment. I'm watching LSU-Miami. And you gave me a headache. I'm done.

I am driving 9 hours to come down to Knoxville for the game this coming weekend against ETSU. I’m still fired up because I’ll get to see my best friend from college (we try to meet for game at least once a year when I’m not deployed overseas). But I’ve grown numb after so long without much real hope of getting back to relevance. Like someone on another thread said: All the fair weather fans are long gone. All that’s left are the dazed guys like me. Kinda walking through the desert like zombies. Seeing mirages.

It’s gotten to the point where I am not sure if what I’m seeing are really reasons to be hopeful for the future or just me fooling myself as a natural reaction to ward off the frustration. During and immediately after the game, I think I saw good signs, but I’ve since concluded that there’s at least a 50% (maybe more like 60-70%) chance that I’m just seeing what I hope is there.

Either way, GO VOLS! I’m here until I’m dead. I just regret that my 9-year old son hasn’t seen much to give him a reason to get excited about the Vols’ prospects. He recognized Butch Jones as a fraud before I did. Maybe now it’ll be different. I’m hopeful ... just not confident.

On the thread title alone...
"Good for you"
On the rest...
