We're not a good football team, simply put. That had a total 2010-2013 Tennessee football feel to it yesterday. Long ways to go.WVU made us look like a D2 squad. I’m shocked so many are still believing we will somehow turn it around quickly. Maybe they watched a different game than me. Yesterday, I was stone cold sober, and I watched the whole game to get a gauge of the new regime/team. I saw a WVU team get a nice tune up game against a D2 type of squad. I’m sorry, it’s what it looked like to me. Imagine if we had played App St! This place would have imploded.
i think we're just gonna have to live with the defense. it's gonna be a work in progresss. i don't read too much in to the pressure, or lack thereof, yesterday simply due to how they distribute the ball. they get rid of it quick. and there were moments where we did apply good pressure. We know what we have, and it’s a combination of talent issues and learning a new scheme on both sides of the ball. Recruiting rankings, evaluations, whatever you call it were either dead wrong on a few guys or they we truly ruined by the previous staff and are facing their last shot at redemption.
Pruitt said it in the fall camp to the secondary. “ if you’re going to get beat, you’re going to get beat playing my way”. Well flowers looks talented in run support but he got exploited playing man and wvu took advantage as they should have.
Pruitt, for better or worse, is playing his system and these guys will either learn or get beat until he can recruit someone to play it correctly.
Lack of pressure on the qb definitely didn’t help a young secondary .
The offense showed some great pieces but it will completely depend on the line settling in. I think Guarantano, the receivers, and especially the backs look dangerous enough to score some points. The first few snaps the line just flat out whiffed, and they’re lucky Guarantano wasn’t killed. Looked better as the game went on.
My uneducated guess is we will make a bowl/miss a bowl strictly based on the offensive line play.
I'm still undecided how good WV is. My gut tells me they are a top 15 team but we made them look like a playoff team which is bad. Maybe they are truly that good? It'll play out in the next few weeks but it's definitely hard to take many positives, as a team, from yesterday. I expect them to improve but they've got so far to go I'm not sure it will show up in the win/loss column. My prediction is that we beat our non-conference opponents and win one SEC game, probably Vandy or KY and finish 5-7. And, we will struggle against one of the non-conference opponents.WVU made us look like a D2 squad. I’m shocked so many are still believing we will somehow turn it around quickly. You have to be kidding me. They only scored on big plays? They moved the football on that defense with ease dude lol. We got absolutely smoked by a team that was head and shoulders above us. Take the orange glasses off.Major over reaction right there. WVU could only score on big plays. Offense didn't have many 3 and outs. Huge improvement from last year.
LA, I just don’t think we have the horses to get a W against UF right now.
Need to focus on accelerating the newcomers and beating UF. If we lose to UF in Neyland on the 20th anniversary en route to a 2-6 start, a lot of fans will check out on the season. UF is the pivot game.

UCLA lost to Cincy at home? Wonder if those fans are giving up on Chip like some of you are giving up on Pruitt after one game. Hahaha.
Fact is WVU is legit and we’re further away from being good than most of us thought. But also there will be improvement over the next two weeks. We’ll know a lot more about this team when the gators come to town. Must find a pass rush if we want to make a bowl game.
So here’s a play that i watched again...
We come out in a cover 2 man under look. Which honestly should cover this play perfectly:
Diagramed like this:
The problem is the Lb bites on the playfake instead of dropping straight back. Even though Buchanan was beat and chasing, if the LB doesn’t bite and drops back that route has to go deeper and would be a tougher throw and closer to the safety.... and I’m not even going to comment on Abernathy’s tackle attempt.
Good call, poor execution.
