Rucker: Reality-check yourself after Vols' rough opener

It will take a Herculean effort by this coaching staff to get us 6 wins this year. We badly need to reach a bowl game. The extra practices (even if it’s in Birmingham) will pay dividends down the road.

The only solution to our woes are recruiting and practice. I think we can make 6-6.

Most of the board did.
“Most” is an overstatement to say the least. Most were saying 5 to 7 wins with a handful saying 8 or more. I didn’t think it for a moment, but this looks like a 4 win team at best. There was very little SEC talent on the field yesterday.

Sheesh, its 1 game. We were playing 3 true freshman in the secondary against NFL receivers and a Heisman finalist QB.

This.. To beat this offense you have to be very physical with their receivers, screw up their routes, COVER and KEEP Grier in the pocket or he will shred you...

Not sure how anyone thought this defense would magically be able to do that THIS year, first game out..

We'll show some progress and I believe we will get there but it won't be this year.. Some on here REALLY need to chill...

Pruitt is good but he's not a magician..

I did see improvement in the first half, I did think the long halftime hurt us more, I also do think the team will get better with each game. I hate to use the half time excuse but the vols seemed to be adjusted and UWV seemed gas and then the long halftime gave them rest and hurt a young team and got them out of rythem.

Did anybody here honestly think this team could be 'great' as Rucker put it? I sure didn't talk to any Vol fans who thought that.

I dont recall a single post that seriously claimed greatness. However I would think most rational fans thought the coaching change would help develop the players and as a result the game would at least be competitive.

At this point, other than QB, I'm not sure that has happened. The worst thing for me is the absolute ineptness some of our WR showed in the blocking game.

There are some bright spots and some adjustments were made on the fly to correct early issues which for certain was a nice change. However both Calloway and Jennings should have been made a bigger part of the offense. As good as some of the RBs looked those two have NFL abilities and IMO JG has the arm (when given time) to exploit teams and this could have happened yesterday.

Anyhow, that was a far cry from what I expected and pray that this staff figures their **** out and manage to win 6 games this year. But I cant say right now that my Hope's are up...

Will be ignored by many. I have a problem with comparing year 1 head coach records. CJP is a cornbread lovin' southerner, he's had incredible talent at previous jobs, but he neither looked like our answer nor did he look like the defensive specialist we were sold.
LOL I dont see how you enjoy watching football.

If any, it was a small number. Most people just wanted to see respectable. We didn't get a lot of in yesterday's game. You can argue about our talent, but looked like there were a lot of busted assignments. To me, that's a lot on the coaches.

Rucker nailed it with that article. He is 100% correct and it would do everyone some good to pay attention. Last year was the worst Vol football team in history, you cant expect a miracle this year.
If CJP is a good coach they will improve as the season goes on and thats what we should be watching for. Then we do like Saban said near the end of his first year when asked after a loss what he was going to do to fix things. He replied "recruit better ball players" and walked off the field.

That folks, is the only solution to our troubles.
Not asking for a miracle but would prefer not to be boat raced against a mid level B12 team. A team that was barely over .500 last year...

Oh, he didn't look like a defensive specialist and our answer after one game against a superior team with a 4-8 roster? Well **** him then, better back the moving truck up. Trash take.

Sorry. Didn't know you had a massive crush on him.

Then you have to ask, why is 5-7 realistic. Because of 3 cup cakes?
Because I think we can improve through practices and experiences. Didn't say 5-7 is a guarantee. In fact it's probably a ceiling. 3-8 isn't unrealistic this year.

I’m so tired of being patient. Really, really tired.

But it is what it is. I’ve tempered expectations this year. Not sure I’m going to even turn on the Bama and GA games. May listen on the radio while doing something else, but I’m simply not going to put myself through that.

The DB's got torched, and that's suppose to be Pruitt's strength, and the defense in general was horrid
I just wanted to see good fundamentals and coaching that isolated their flaws. I saw nothing like that, and it concerns me.
