Where do we have to improve?

It's the first game of the year against a pretty good team. Yea we made their defense look better than they most likely are but their offense is top notch. Were young and have a new coach, everyone is trying to find their fitting on this team, players and coaches. I don't think it's all doom and gloom, they will get better as the season goes along, it can't be worse than last year. Honestly I think Bama, Auburn, and UGA are the only sure fire losses, I think the rest of the schedule are winnable games, they will have to improve and play at their best but they can beat the other teams.

This team won't win SEC games without a miracle or different players

Pass rush = awful
Secondary = really, really awful
Run D = not good
Run blocking = not good
Pass blocking = awful
Passing = fair (qb improved)
Running game = ok (considering)
Special teams (all around) = not good
Tackling = not good
Play calling = fair (at best)

Lots to work on........pretty much everything on D, and blocking on O

This, but we will still be okay this year. Worst case, 6-6 and a December bowl.

Relax...these things take time.

Go Vols.
Long term I believe we will be good and have confidence in CJP and Staff.
6-6 this year may be tough.
We don’t have any game changers unless they. Are true freshman and not quite there yet!
We have some talent but no Barnett or Maggitt or AJ Johnson to disrupt an offense or Kamara on offense

They may not win any Sec games but I'm more optimistic than you are I guess. It's a long season and have plenty of time to improve. Other than UGA the sec east is mediocre at best, none of the remaining teams in the east are anything to brag about. South Carolina might make the jump and put themselves up there with Georgia but do you think any of the remaining teams are top 25 teams? I don't. Hopefully this coaching staff earns their pay and gets the best out of these kids, if that happens they can certainly beat some of these east teams. UK, Vandy, and Missouri are beatable, and who knows about Florida, I just can't write them off after one game, maybe it's just the fan in me.

You could point at basically any position and you wouldn't be wrong. As for me, I'd say our passing defense needs vast improvement. Our secondary got torched today. Sometimes it was a great throw by the QB or poor pass rush, but too many times the secondary were a step or two behind...just letting guys get behind us..

There were a number of throws where Grier had a man open and/or got a good look, but just missed the throw. We were fortunate on a few plays no doubt. It could have been much, much worse..

Defense
Get more pressure on the QB so he doesn't have the easy time to throw.
Effectively defend the Tight Ends and WRS so that busted coverage isn't happening more than 3 times. Busted coverage was either a big gain, or a all to easy td, etc.
Create the turnovers early so that the offense is disrupted, also create more than 1 turnover.
Play 2 Halfs of Football because it's pretty damn hard to win a Football game when the other team scores 27 points in the 2nd Half since this was a close 13-7 game at halftime.
Don't just make contact wrap the hell up and bring the damn player down.
Don't give up a high amount of big runs.
Limit a team to fgs for most of the game not just 1 half.
Reduce the success percentage of the other team for 3rd downs by stopping the other team.

Offense
Keep the momentum going from a turnover by scoring a td otherwise it's a utterly wasted opportunity and momentum is lost.
Score than more more than 17 points in the 2nd half if limited to 7 points in the first half, and score more than 7 points in the 1st half which is possible.
Score points when needed and early so the Vols don't have to score more than 14 points to come back.
Move the ball on 1st and 2nd downs so can avoid 3rd and long situations where getting a first down is damn challenging when on the same drive.

For both sides avoid the damn awful mistakes of false start and other penalties that make it more challenging for stop the team, or get a first down.
Also for both sides Play effectively as a team for most of the game.
Offense executed with tds to make the game close except the Mountaineers would score touchdowns, and the defense was able to create a fumble which they recovered and the offense didn't finish because couldn't score a major td.
Football is a team sport and they need to play together as a team to win a team sport.

Otherwise it's a Car with 2 Flat tires that is driving in a race with a other car that has no flat tires.
That was the Vols today for most of the game.

For me our D line has to get a lot better. Little QB pressure and when we got some we couldn't get a sack. Anytime WV ran the ball they got at least 4 yards. A lot of the guys on our D line are juniors or seniors, so it's time for them to play well or get out of the way so we can develop the younger guys.

I know our secondary didn't play well, but a lot of those guys are Freshman so I was expecting to take some lumps. We need Warrior to be a leader back there. I'd like to see either Jackson or Shamburger play more too at the other Safety spot.

What is your take?

22 is a liability in the secondary he can’t tackle or cover. I would love to see him improve of replaced.

The front four must learn how to tackle and get off blocks. They have to get better for this team to make a bowl game.

Many of WV's pass plays appeared to be perfectly executed, making defense extremely difficult for DBs running tight on their man. However, some of Grier's passes could have been handled by the defender. Our guys seemed untrained in committing to making a play at the crucial moment. They were not turning for the ball when the receiver turned. They failed to intercept or block passes, and then failed to tackle after the catch -- when they could have. And where was the press at the line we've been reading about? Did anybody see our DBs playing press? WV's receivers were more experienced, and they were visibly more aggressive.

Where don't we need to improve? Lookit, this is not going to be a sprint, but a marathon. Give Pruitt some time, he's dealing with years of revolving doors with staff previous and no continuity, outright neglect and coaching up.

Jeez take a breath folks. One game against maybe the best passing offense in the country. Yes they looked bad especially second half. There was some good offensive production. Their OLine was just bigger and stronger than our Dline. Go look at measurables, same thing for OL and DL. There were some questionable offensive play calls. DBs are real inexperienced against a WR group that is prolly holding three NFL draft picks. Plus Heisman QB. It’ll be ok. There is a real chance that by the end of the season WVU is in the playoff discussion. We may have just gotten beat by an Clemson, Alabama, Georgia grade team. We got some good games to get tuned up before FL. Hey at least KY almost got beat by nobody. It is possible we are just a 6-6 team this year. Like everyone says. Calm down.

Have to get some pass rush together. We give up automatic 3 yards against the run on d. Defensive backs should improve week to week. Linebackers were mediocre at best. There was not a single player that flashed on defense.

I'm not encouraged at all with the offense. That is a mediocre defense we just made look elite. There were some very questionable calls. Offensive line was offensive. Receivers looked pretty good. Run game is going to struggle this year with consistency.

I thought we looked slow in all aspects of the game. We were chasing way too much in this game. Also, concerned about toughness. We were not playing a SEC team today and I thought we were very soft.

Not exactly comparing apples to apples, but this game felt eerily similar to those games against Oregon in which we should have matched up with them talent wise, but we just couldn't couldn't seem to loosen up enough to meet them head on. Always reacting, a step late, and chasing vapor.

1Secondary
2line of scrimmage
3 offensive play calling (don’t play safe all the damn time)
I don't think it was playing safe. I think it was JG not being able to one have time to throw and two not seeing the whole field. Can't tell me Callaway and Jennings were the only guys open all game.

Edit: That being said JG threw well. I just think he might of missed some open targets.

Missed assignments caused a lot of what you saw. Very good QB for WV caused a lot of the blitz packages to be shelved, even when we ran them, Grier was still able to execute. First game will be completely different than the last game you see the Vols play this year.

Tennessee has very few good players, Im Not sure any Vol player could start for WV, possibly Trey Smith, but few if any others
That’s ridiculous. Their best receiver was a guy who was playing QB at a Juco. The difference is Holgerson has built a staff and a program for eight years and then hit the jackpot with Grier.
That was not a matter of jimmies and joes. WV hasn’t even been recruiting in the same waters as UT.
