FL Gov. candidate Ron DeSantis "Lets not monkey this up" while referring to black opponent

How would you interpret his quote?

  • Seems like a racist use of words.

  • I know of the phrase "monkey this up" and use it regularly and it is not a racist term.

  • I don't care if it seems racist, I think he is still the better candidate than the liberal.

  • I agree with him, we should not "monkey this up".

How does he benefit?

Trump Playbook 101:

Make statement you know invokes theme you want to exploit, which is controversial, and do it indirectly. Let everyone else talk about it. Then shrug and grin, like you had nothing to do with it. Let simmer.

Not sure how you can determine it's not about the opponent when he says "he" half a dozen times in the 30 seconds leading up to the comment. The anchor's face is priceless.

Your white guilt sees what it wants to see. Sorry, but there's nothing here.

“The last thing WE need to do is monkey this up...”

So is saying we don’t want to “monkey this up” he’s calling his opponent a monkey?...🙄

When I heard it the connotation I took would be that the voters of Florida--that's the "we"--would "monkey this up" if they changed course by going with Gillum.

You're just like the fools on the left who shout down "Uncle Toms" who speak out of line with their race. Just because I disagree with you, doesn't mean I have white guilt.

Tell me, why did her face look like that? Can somebody explain that? I can.

Where does he get more votes out of this? Are people that were voting for Gillum now doing to change their vote to DeSantis?

It's like you guys don't even understand that context is a thing. Also, you can't compare commonly used phrases with a made up phrase.

Yeah, and you know what he was thinking when he said it. I didn't know you had that kind of reach. In that case, yes, he was calling him a monkey to get votes. He so smart!

Her expression never really changed from start to finish. I thought DeSantis was complimentary of his opponent, and said that he performed better (I feel sure he was referring to performing like a circus monkey) than the others in the debates, and that he would have his work cut out for him.

If thats the fact then the people of Florida get what they deserve, but I don't see them voting for a socialist as Governor

Oh, he does not have much of a chance to actually win. But, this faux outrage will gain him some votes that he would not have gotten.

But I understood that he was saying the voters would "monkey it up" by putting Gillum in there, which could have a more literal or figurative meaning. Kind of a double entendre.
JFC. Yeah I heard it was directed at us the voters but we would be acting like monkeys in reference to electing a black man thus obviously were calling the black man a monkey!

Never change EL never change.

😂 So you show the face she makes at the start of the exchange, they cut to DeSantis and he goes thru the whole statement, then several seconds AFTER he said it and probably close to 30 seconds from the initial picture they cut back and she has a different facial expression.

Shocking truly shocking. 😂😂

Its primarily a get out the vote thing. He and the GOP in Florida generally know that their biggest enemy in November is Republican voter apathy. And that is true really all across the country. That is why Trump et al are trying to nationalize every race.

It's about building a bulwark against impeachment of Trump.

It's about keeping Pelosi out of power.

It's about continuing to undo that which Obama did.

Not about local politics or even state issues. The message that got Trump elected is one of spite. Stick it to the Dems. Stick it to the media. To hell with what makes sense -- if it makes the Dems mad, we are for it. Delight in partisan politics as opposed to sound public policy.
