Josh Dobbs (merged)

ESPN projecting Steelers will keep Dobbs on the 53 man roster to gauge trade interest and only use 8 o-linemen for the time being.

It's hard to believe that they haven't been gauging interest for some time. If there were willing trade partners, the Steelers would already know. The fact is that anyone who is interested in Dobbs knows that he will eventually be available either thru waivers or free agency. There is little to no point in trading for him.

Oh no doubt they’ve been gauging interest, but no one gets serious about deals for backups until cut time. And most teams won’t wait if the Steelers gamble through weeks 1 and 2 with Dobbs still available

I think the Steelers waited too long to gauge interest. They should’ve traded him during draft or near offseason. All the teams will hope they can pick him up through waivers. It’s like in Fantasy football and your QB is on Bye that week. You wouldn’t have traded for a backup but you could get one on waivers/FA. That’s exactly what all these teams are waiting for. Steelers waited to long to COMMIT to a trade. They probably thought they could get more value but now they will never know.

Correct TDawg, he'll start the next game and play 1/ 1.5 quarters. That's his last opportunity to audition for a job in a new city.

And if no takers, they then waive him and put him on the practice squad?
This is the scenario that I have felt would go down. I don't think they simply cut him, but I don't think they keep 4 QBs on the active roster. Practice squad would he better than being cut.

I think for most of us, any enjoyment doesn't come from watching Dobbs. It comes from watching D4H spin, spin, spin.

I don't spin. I've been consistent from Day 1.

You guys will learn soon enough that I was right all along. Just have patience. Dobbs has 20 years of amazing football in front of him.

Just know that everything I've been saying comes to a position of absolute confidence. Please don't think I've lucked my way into this prediction when Dobbs becomes exactly what I've been saying he would be for over 3 years.

You'll forgive me, but I just don't think I'll be able to help myself.

He has plenty of time for all that, and will get more opportunities in the NFL. I don't think he'll ever be a full time starter but he can have a good career as a backup and part time starter.
Read my post above and heed my words. He stays out 5 years and he will have to go back to school.

Josh Dobbs will make it work in the NFL where those guys couldn't. How come? Because he's more talented.

There's a reason I always compare Dobbs to Randall Cunningham. That's who he is most like ATHLETICALLY. Just as Randall dominated the NFL scrambling, so will Dobbs. The difference is Dobbs is a far better passer. His passing is most like Warren Moon. So combine Warren Moon's passing with Randall Cunningham's running and you get Josh Dobbs.

This is why I'm so confident in him.
HELL NO!!!! Dobbs passing ability is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE WARREN MOON! I mean, you've made some dumb, bad and awful comparisons but THIS one may be the worst of them all. Moon had a better arm, was far better at reading defenses, was better at decision making and his mechanics were just spot on. Here is a better example of Dobbs as a passer:

8. Akili Smith
43 OF 50
  1. Drafted: Round 1, 3rd Overall, 1999
The Bengals have a history of bad luck with quarterbacks. Smith might be the last one that was a huge bust, but he had a forgettable career with the Bengals.
He had a small sample size in college (one full season), but he was athletic and considered a two-sport star (he was a blue-chip baseball prospect too). All that athleticism, however, was teamed with a terrible ability to mentally prepare and grasp a playbook.
The Bengals could have traded this pick, but ended up staying put to draft Smith. They also get yet another spot on this list.

Warren Moon? Absolutely not and there is no comparison between the two

The more I read VN, the more I become convinced that D4H is some guy who is trolling us all with insincere takes, maybe it's just wishful thinking on my end

Seahawks will not be the landing spot for Josh Dobbs, but they prove that the Steelers have a very real shot of trading him. Seahawks traded a sixth round pick for Brett Hundley from the Packers.

IF, and I do mean IF, Dobbs even sees a regular season snap and that is a LOOOONG shot, you still will have lucked into it because you don't have the skill to evaluate the QB position AT ALL. None of this has been a knock on Dobbs just the reality of what he is up against. There is a reason QBs who are exceptional athletes in college but only decent as passers don't have long term success in the NFL. Guys like Cam Newton and Deshaun Watson are examples of what being a great athlete AND a very good to great passer can do in the league. Guys like Vince Young, Johnny Manziel, Josh Dobbs and even RGIII really aren't good enough as passers to make a splash in the NFL.

Well, there goes my pick.

And you're right, it does show that a trade market for backup QBs exists, but it's a buyer's market. If Hundley fetches a sixth rounder, then Dobbs isn't going to go for anything more than that.

Only one person expects much more than a sixth round pick for any Josh Dobbs trade.
