There’s a good reason that NFL players don’t get timed in the 40 AFTER the Combine. Fans aren’t as knowledgeable about what constitutes PLAYING speed. Jerry Rice never timed faster than a 4.6 and I never remember him getting hauled down after he got past corners who did. You have to have acceptable speed at the SEC level and beyond, but the BEST players don’t cost themselves with wasted motion. Justin Martin was plenty fast but didn’t play like it and that’s been case with Tyler Byrd. Bama players have benefited from superior TEACHING in that aspect and that’s what Pruitt’s preaching.No doubt about that. But the old axiom that you can’t teach speed is also true.
Martin was the first that came to my mind also.There’s a good reason that NFL players don’t get timed in the 40 AFTER the Combine. Fans aren’t as knowledgeable about what constitutes PLAYING speed. They wanted Jaylen McCullough (reported 4.7) at RUNNING BACK! What kind of shizz show is Muskrat running over there?Martin was the first that came to my mind also.
Pruitt has been nothing but BRUTALLY honest about the condition of our team since he's been here "too small", " not enough effort" etc;
But against all facts and evidence to the contrary, a rival fan of the cocks comes in and accuses him of sugar-coating and we have a group that that can't wait to lap up every drop.
Almost funny, except, not.![]()
This is not a CJP quote. He most likely got this from Gene Stallings. Gene said that a 4.4 will get you out of the play in a hurry on defense. Can't remember the whole quote, but its a good one and very true.
Agree 100%Had a boss in the Army who had a similar pet phrase: "son, going 100 miles an hour in the wrong direction isn't going to get you to the goal, it's just gonna get you farther away from it faster."
Sounds like Jeremy is reassuring our lads that they can be just as good as any team full of 5* players (*cough* Bama), as long as they do a good job learning from his coaches how to play smart.
I haven't given up on Tyler Byrd yet. I'm hoping some coaching up turns him around!There’s a good reason that NFL players don’t get timed in the 40 AFTER the Combine. Amen!If you have ever coached a team sport like football, soccer, basketball etc., you learn quickly that a player that understands what his assignment is and how to do it, is more valuable than a more athletic player that just doesn’t get it, or doesn’t try. Busted assignments are killers.
It is really frustrating to have a great athlete on your team and you can’t get him to understand what you want him to do. Many times they are able but not willing to listen or try. Many times coaches continue to give them special consideration and a starting position when they need a little bench time.
Impossible to win big without lots of speed. Possible to lose with lots of speed if you're stupid and run in the wrong direction. Therefore, speed can never be overrated, but must be tempered with some degree of intelligence. If he said it can be overrated, he's absolutely wrong. If he meant otherwise, he needs to learn English gooder, even for a football coach.
