All I know is Terry Fair is going to earn his paycheck getting our secondary ready for WV's passing attack... We won't be able to shut them down, but if we can minimize the long balls and put constant pressure on the QB, we can stay in this thing until the end.

BTW, I just get the feels when I look at our staff and see Fair, Simon, and Hardesty .... full circle stuff.

If we are successful running the ball they will be forced to load the box on us. If at the end of the game we determine we couldn't run the ball well enough the real reason we may lose the game is we weren't able to pass the ball well enough. We cannot afford to be any more one-dimensional than we will try to make them. The only way for us to stop this from being a shootout is for our defense to stop Greir. On our side we need to score as many TDs as possible, however we can do it, and keep scoring TDs. Of course we don't want a shootout with them; what we want is a blowout against them. I don't think any lead for us in the waning moments of the game will be safe. jmo.
i think there's going to have to be a certain level of "we're going to have to live with WVU making some plays on offense" type patience regarding the defensive match up with WVU's offense. we're not going to shut them down, consistently.

i think two things matter in that match up:
1. tackling in space. it's just an absolute must with their system. they're going to get guys in space and we'll have to be taking good angles and making tackles, one on one. make them earn it. can't give up a bunch of big plays.
2. there will be opportunities to turn them over and get off the field on 3rd down. have to make those count.

what ever else happens, we'll just have to live with it, cause they're going to move the ball and score.

offensively, you touched on something important. i think i'll be a little surprised if we see 6 or 7 man fronts to start the game. now their secondary issues numbers wise may dictate they start in some zone, and maybe they'll try to protect their secondary a little bit, but as we sit here today, no one is scared of our passing attack. so when we have man opportunities, we have to show we can beat that. so while i agree that we will likely want to be a run first type offense, i can see us being somewhat aggressive in the passing game early in this one, especially if we do see the stacked box, with 8 man fronts.

gonna be interesting. no doubt our defense has the tougher match up though.

This right here. I think someone mentioned it before, but if you watch their highlights from last year, their receivers were running behind some slow secondaries. Thankfully, we have veteran safeties to help over the top.

OL for WVU is looking like Smith, Locklear, Kennedy, RJohnson and Richmond/Hall. Richmond is best at RT and can slide over to LT when needed. Decent OL for a power run game, especially against a weak D like WVU's.
surely Hall isn't game ready right now? but as this week presses on, i think you're right on that 1st five.

Be interesting to see how locklear does because Carvin and Calbert have more beef and on his heels. Could really smash folks with one of those two next to smith and Kennedy.

i think you'll see those guys play plenty, agreed. i don't see how how they keep Carvin off the field at this point. he'll be in the regular rotation for sure.

Yeah, Amerson looked like an AA when Zach Rogers was dustin' his ass lol. I think this WVU team would beat that NCSU team by a decent margin. Jmo.

Carvin, Calbert and Tatum are in the 10-man. So they'll play. And my guess is they could work their way into starting sometime this season. Our 10-man isn't nearly as bad as people think. Smith and Kennedy are solid anchors, and the other guys are coming along.

Fair or foul???

1) This first game will be a huge indicator on how successful our Offense will be for the year

2) this first game will tell us very little about how successful our D will be on the year.

I think both statements are fair

I think one or both of them will eventually take over as starters but Carvin is a true freshman and Calbert is healthy for the first time ever and needs to develop confidence in his legs first. I would think at this point Locklear has way more experience and I would imagine significantly better technique, which can be far more effective than pure power with less technique at this level, so beginning of the season he is probably the safer more reliable option.

Foul. I think the Florida game will tell us more. We'll have had 2 cupcakes to sort out the depth chart, and WVU is too one-dimensional to draw significant conclusions outside of a few key metrics (turnovers, pass rush).

I agree that the florida game will tell us more but I think on offense if we struggle that is going to tell us a lot about what kind of year we are going to have on that side of the ball.
