A QB with a great arm gives you more options for scoring points, but a bad QB can score more points for the opposing team than he scores for you. It's an interesting thing when evaluating QBs.

1. How many points do you need to score to win?
2. What kind of offensive emphasis will score that many?
3. What quality of QB play is required to do so?
4. How many more will you need to score if your QB makes mistakes?

The answers would vary by opponent. So might our starter.

there's a lot of different directions this could go. if KC does get the nod this year and winds up being the guy for 2018, i feell confident, just like many here do, that JG is gone. so no matter what happens this season, one of the guys in the 2 deep isn't going to be hear in 2019.

after that, it starts to get real hazy not knowing how many qb's we'll get this year, who they will be aside from Mauer. and projecting out to the 2020 class is a fool's errand at this point...lol so yeah, to say the qb position is "up in the air" is probably putting it mildly.

If JG can't beat out KC this year, trying to beat out Shrout next year isn't likely to go much better. JG's window is now, IMO.

well another thing to consider, and i think this is really where the crux of the problem is, and really what the staff wants to get to....is do you have a QB that allows you to game plan for what YOU want to do, and not around what he can't.

and no matter who our starter is, i think there's more gameplanning to be done about what either guy can't do, vs. what either can do to dictate the outcome.

Peyton manning wasn't a game manager. Heath shuler wasn't either. Tee martin was. they had to change the way they called games and created game plans around his limitations.

you didn't have those limitations with guys like shuler, mannin, clausen etc.....that's where this staff wants to be.

I just want the team to win. WVU is ranked only because of Grier. Their defense is going to be a patchwork defense. It wouldn't surprise me if we can get a good passing attack going with how thin their secondary is.

agreed. like i siad, no matter what happens, 1 of the guys in the current 2 deep isn't going to be here next year.

My opinion of what they “want” is based on the fact that I believe, of the two QB’s in the competition, that they feel most comfortable with Chryst - and I believe that to be the case. So if you grant me the assumption these two guys are what they are to a certain extent - that they would prefer for Chryst to perform better and win the job.

I don’t believe they are ~comfortable~ with JG. Even if he has the most talent, they’re not sure he gives them the best chance to win in the offense they’re trying to create this season. Of course they’re not going to be upset if JG turns into Peyton Manning and runs away with the job - but that hasn’t happened and probably isn’t going to happen.

So of the two available options: a talented guy who may not totally fit the system and has issues with turnovers and internal timing

and: the guy who may not have the most talent but fits the ideal system a bit better and can more effectively operate within the offense and its schemes

I absolutely believe that if all things are equal (they’re not right now but it’s close) that they will give the benefit of the doubt to Chryst.

Just my opinion of course. A little bit of what I’ve heard and a little bit of a gut feeling based on the fact that - according to every report we’re getting - that JG is way ahead but for some reason is not getting more snaps than the rest of the QB’s. They want Chryst to overtake him. It doesn’t mean they’ll play the “worse” QB just for fit. But I think it signals how they “want” things to occur.

In general what you are trying to express is accurate. But you are all over the place basically mismatching your terminology. Sounds more like your issue is you don't want to see a certain style of offense. If the coaches feel a QB that is more turnover and sack prone but might make more splash plays doesn't give us as good of a chance to win as a safer boring QB then they are choosing who they think gives us the best chance to WIN. The job of QB goes way beyond arm talent. It's like playing an undersized post player in basketball because he gives you a better chance of winning than a taller player. Do you want a better player that is also taller? Absolutely. Do the coaches want a player with more arm talent and big play potential AND does all the other stuff better too? Of course. We don't have that on the roster.

I'll be shocked if the game plan isn't to run the ball straight at them behind Trey Smith until West Virginia shows they can stop it.

Sometimes football is just that simple.

well i'll throw this out at ya, cause in merit, i agree. think we will definitley try/want to run the ball and man handle them up front.

but if they come out and show us 8 man fronts, and we have little to no help at safety, and you have man coverages....dont' you try to attack that? that more than anything else would help the run game....

it's going to be interesting to see how they line up defensively, and how we choose to attack it if they do stack the box.

I agree and I think that will be a very big portion of the game plan. But, we do have to throw the ball some and it wouldn't surprise me if our passing game does well.

if we prove we're proficient at all in the passing game, that will do nothing but help the run game. it's gonna be interesting to see how we attak that defense, especially early on in the game.

really curious about how they're going to line up against us.

Yep. I'm going to be giddy if we can just line up and run it right at them from the jump, and then light them up with DWA when they try to adjust.

Say we have a porous defense... you probably start JG. If our defense proves to be legit, KC is probably the man.
