yep. and taking that in to consideration, if there was every any inkling with the offensive coaches that JG could start here this year, then the biggest thing they could accomplish by bringing KC in here is to provide competition and depth at QB short term, and starting next year, you'll have probably a full on qb competition with JG, shrout and any incoming freshmen. and i won't be shocked if they go grad transfer route next year too, no matter what. jmo.
Thought some of these stats were interesting regarding downfield passing from our OC's previous stint. Apparently these come from an ESPN internal employee database so I couldn't find full lists or previous years, but in comparison to the big names in the draft last year it's still interesting.
So Darnold had the most attempts that traveled 20+ yards in the air downfield by a fairly significant amount. Middle of the pack in screen passes. Which led to middle of the pack for the drafted guys but above FBS average in Air Yards per Attempt. I have no doubt we will want to be a power running team. And I believe we will utilize the screen a lot as well. But this is one of the reasons I believe we will take a lot more shots downfield than people expect. I get the "oh it's the first year so we gotta not lose it" stuff. And my prediction may be way off. But that's my opinion. And one reason I think JG will win the job. We'll find out soon enough.
on the first part, agree 100%.If anything else having a veteran qb from a great program that has received top tier coaching should be an example to JG what it looks like to work in practice, film room, etc. it’s up to JG to do that and from what I’m hearing he’s still struggling with adversity and the leadership qualities you want in a QB.
My opinion of what they “want” is based on the fact that I believe, of the two QB’s in the competition, that they feel most comfortable with Chryst - and I believe that to be the case. So if you grant me the assumption these two guys are what they are to a certain extent - that they would prefer for Chryst to perform better and win the job.If anything it would be the opposite. They would want the talented sophmore to grow up, win the job, and play well. Even if KC wins the job, plays like a nfl qb, and we go 9-3... we’re still back to square one next year.

ha...on that last part. i think he wants a qb that can stress a defense. figures a HS qb's interecepiton issue may just be because he's in HS and doens't understand all the how/why things happen. w/the right coaching, a kid like that, can be a weapon if used correctly aginst a defense.
i think as a defensive coordinator, he knows what he doesn't like to see. he doesn't like big powerful offensive lines. he doesn't like big, fast, powerful backs that are hard to tackle, he hates TE's that are a match up nightmare against most LB's and he probably hates big rangy WR's with huge catch radiuses.
and i'm sure he hates QB's that can place the ball down field and make the defense chase.
so offensively, pruitt probably just thinks "i hate this....." and then goes and finds it.
just a theory.
yep. and 2020 will just rinse and repeat. not knowing what the future holds for the QB position, it may be 2020 or later before we have a multi year starter at QB....
yeah it is. i do think the RS rule put in place, may slow some of it down, but the reality is, if you're getting QB's like that to sign, you can almost bet 1 or 2 just aren't going to finish at your school. The way grad transfers are going now where players will have 2 years to play is honestly a game changer for QBs.
there's a lot of different directions this could go. if KC does get the nod this year and winds up being the guy for 2018, i feell confident, just like many here do, that JG is gone. so no matter what happens this season, one of the guys in the 2 deep isn't going to be hear in 2019.We're on target to sign Bailey in '20 and if we can sign a second QB in '19, that adds an option. We'll see what Shrout and Maurer bring next year. Will be surprising if McBride doesn't transfer.
