Thought some of these stats were interesting regarding downfield passing from our OC's previous stint. Apparently these come from an ESPN internal employee database so I couldn't find full lists or previous years, but in comparison to the big names in the draft last year it's still interesting.

So Darnold had the most attempts that traveled 20+ yards in the air downfield by a fairly significant amount. Middle of the pack in screen passes. Which led to middle of the pack for the drafted guys but above FBS average in Air Yards per Attempt. I have no doubt we will want to be a power running team. And I believe we will utilize the screen a lot as well. But this is one of the reasons I believe we will take a lot more shots downfield than people expect. I get the "oh it's the first year so we gotta not lose it" stuff. And my prediction may be way off. But that's my opinion. And one reason I think JG will win the job. We'll find out soon enough.

There’s a huge gulf in Sam Darnold’s arm talent/ability and the two guys we have on campus.

Agree. I think preference would be to have it all click for Guarantano so you have your guy for 2 yrs. they have made it clear in media comments what they need to see from him. Get through progressions faster and make the guys around you better. Those 2 things are critical and so is winning the West Va and FL games. Whoever they feel better about who can get them through that first stretch 4-0 before the brutal middle will be the guy.

That middle stretch will be rough so plenty of chances to see both at some point this yr

He’s fine in that department but there’s a reason Darnold was a first round pick and looks to be a day 1 starter in the NFL.
I agree. I'm not saying JG is Darnold. I'm saying our OC comes from a background of liking to take deep shots. So the qb with the better arm may fit his system better. Just providing evidence and reasoning for why I have the opinion I do. Like I said. We'll find out soon enough. Just speculating the same as you.

JG has as good of an arm as you will find. The big difference in Darnold vs JG is Darnolds IT factor, playmaking instincts and making everyone else around him better. Darnold was a winner that upped their level of play. Hard to know what JG in that category but as unfair as it may be he didn't lead team to wins in close games late last yr. the great QBs can pull those out by being the difference in how everyone plays together with them in the game. It's possible our offense was just so bad that nobody could have won but my gut tells me if Darnold was or QB last yr we win more games with same staff

And that’s what we’re talking about.

From what I’d heard I was very high on JG - thought he’d have a big year.

Now it seems like they’re planning to ride Chryst (if he shows more consistency these next two weeks) and either hope JG doesn’t transfer (he will if he’s not the guy), try to get Hurts next year, or do their best to make sure Shrout is ready.

Lots of conjecture

qb is the most important position on the field. it's not a one man show, certainly. but a good/great qb, can make up for a lot of issues elsewhere.

and as i type that, i do agree with you. there was so much wrong with the whole passing game in general, i'm not sure it would have mattered who the qb was. maybe it makes a difference in a couple of the close games, maybe it doesn't. in the end, superb qb play last year maybe gets us to 6 wins. that's probably about it.

this offense this year needs to be as balanced as possible, with the understanding that no one is going to respect our passing game until it's proven you should. i would imagine we'll see a lot of 8 man fronts, daring us to throw the ball early on. whoever the qb is, will have opportunities with man coverage. WR's will need to beat that and the o line will need to protect, and the qb needs to deliver the ball.

over simplified of course, but in general, i find it hard to believe we'll get a lot of 6 or 7 man fronts with defenses trying to keep us "in front" of them....lol.

Chryst fits the offense better and has the confidence of the coaching staff from a playbook, adjustments, etc. perspective.

JG has the better arm and has performed pretty well in camp - although he’s been more boon or bust.

They’re going to give Chryst every chance to win the job.

UEM be like...

I taking shots down field is a lot easier to do when you have darnold. Darnold has a lot of that adlib play style that Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre had too tho. Where he will go off script or extend plays and then take shots down field. His eyes never left down field even escaping the pocket.

Watching him play against penn state was literally watching art.

There is no comparison b/w JG and Darnold outside of the fact that they both play QB.
agreed. not sure why we continue to go down that rabbit hole in regards to any qb comparison at this point. i don't think anyone is going to mistake JG or KC as all american/1st round draft pick type guys.
