Can we all agree that whoever we start, he wouldn't even make third string at UGA? We need an elite QB prospect in this class and every class.

Chryst was brought in to compete and at a minimum provide 2nd team depth. But I don’t believe for a second that they’re gonna skew the circumstances in Chryst’s favor....the players would pick up on that in a second and JP would run the risk of creating dissension and splitting the locker room ..... I think he’s smarter than that.

No, it’ll be a fair competition and Chryst will either win the job fair and square or he’ll be JG’s backup as s capable guy with good game experience.....and I think that’s the ultimate scenario that’ll play out here.

If u was a grad transfer and u had one year left would go to a school where u had a chance to start or go to a school to provide depth? JG has to be twice as good or better to start over Chryst..QB is the most imortant piece to a team to a new coach..I may be wrong but JG only have one win on his resume vs Chryst 12-1 record regardless of Chryst opponents he still got the wins..No knock to JG..Im just being realistic..

For me there's way too much upside for JG compared to Chryst. I honestly expect JG to be the guy. He's not Dobbs but there's a lot of similarities between his 2017 and Dobbs' 2013, and I expect our line and our playcalling to be better than both last year and 2014. A lot of you are really underestimating how predictable we were on offense under the last regime. When we had talent like Dobbs, Kamara, Hurd, and Kelly all coming out of the same backfield we were able to look like a functioning offense but once those elements started to leave, the evidence reappeared. Guarantano is good enough to get us to a winning record this year. Unless Chryst has mastered all elements of the offense already, and can get us in the right run plays as well as the right pass plays at the LOS, I really don't see what his upside could be.

Why does JG have to be twice as good? If you have two guys that you think give you the same chance to win, you take the one that has more time. Especially if they display the same capacity to learn your system. QB might be important to first year coaches(I disagree, personally, especially in college and ESPECIALLY in this league), but even more important is having some consistency, and continuity. And being smart with the football is paramount to a change of regime.

Totally agree if he is not ready now don't see him ever being the guy. Shrout is a physically talented player that has to mature and learn the system plus get a little more consistent. JG should get the start and based on his first couple possessions determine whether he keeps it. If he can't dice up the W Va defense not very many any easier down the line.

To add I think the call is going to be both will play against W Va. I think that is where the starter going forward will be determined.

As I’ve recently heard Hubbs and Price say, Chryst was not promised the starting job at Tennessee like you’ve continually suggested, only the fair opportunity to compete and be the guy if he is the best guy.

Keep saying it all you want, but I’ve heard time and again from guys who oughtta know (VQ guys, Mathews, Swain, etc) that they think Chryst was brought in to compete yes, but more than anything else, to provide depth as JG’s backup if he doesn’t win the job because the coaches know McBride can’t play here. And as of this week, guys like Hubbs, Price and Simonton are still saying JG is in the driver’s seat to be the starter vs WVU. We’ll see....Chryst still has the scrimmage today and another few practices next week to try and leapfrog JG and win the job. If I were you, I’d keep praying day and night like you have been that JG isn’t named the starter, but I don’t think I’d hold my breath.

In Chryst’s case he was just trying to find someone who would take him. Very few would. Most assumed he’d just go play for his uncle and back up Hornibrook for a year before trying to get into coaching.

Damn greazy, how will Brandon be able to play with chryst winning all those games for Tennessee this year when he is the only person on the field playing right? Quit with the record crap, chryst is as responsible for that 11-2 record as a starter as Brandon Johnson is responsible for all of the losses from last year.( Hint: Neither are ultimately responsible for a win or a loss, you know cause there is 10 others onthe field trying too.)It's a team sport, quit acting like the teams around them are irrelevant.

Stanford already has their guy. If Chryst had stayed there, he would be competing for second string. Here, he is being given the opportunity to compete for the job. That's a sizeable improvement over what his circumstances would have been at Stanford. Chryst lost his job to a freshman and would have had to go to a low level conference to be guaranteed a starting job. To reiterate what I said earlier, Chryst is a one year mercenary with a low ceiling. JG is a sophomore with a lot of upside. If the two are pretty close, you start JG. Just common sense.

I predict rumors abound that KC has all but locked it up after today's scrimmage. Then JG starts WV despite all reports to the contrary. He then proceeds to lead us to wins in the first 3 games, but struggles against Florida and is replaced by KC in the second half. We win a close one to Florida, KC is then named starter for Ga. JG pouts while we lose the next 4. JG then is named as starter for UNCC. We win all but Mizzou, because of a Dooley curse. Finish 7-5 with a trip to Belk or Liberty bowl.

Second. By Vandy he was running the whole offense. He was passing downfield more than QD. Also 154.5 rating vs Vandy, an SEC team. The only team QD even had over a 135 rating was Indiana State.

You do realize that the one time Dormady faced a decent team we got shut out 41-0 right? In a game JG was 6/7.
JG performed better and played better competition than him minus the azz kicking Dormady got by UGA. Who played most of the game vs SM? What did JG do before he left the game? Come on stop trying to twist things to make JG look bad.

Our whole source of disagreement isn't any "hate" I have for JG but rather my realistic recognition of his weaknesses and your delusion concerning the same PLUS your habit of trashing and "hating on" anyone who beats him out or threatens to. You even went so far as to try to draw "evidence" from what JG did against UGA playing against reserves playing their base D with the game already out of hand? Do you not see how ridiculous that is? Dormady stank out loud in that game. The whole team played poorly but he had his worst game and possibly the game that sent him to Houston. Sometimes failures that bad just can't be overcome without a complete change. It again confirms my point about you that you can't feel for a Vol who failed while recognizing he failed. You are blinded by bias. The only person here comparable to you in my years on this board is D4H.

So what stat site is there that I can go to that shows offensive ypg, sacks, record etc under the qb's stats? I'll save you the time. NONE. They aren't qb stats. If they are Jalen Hurts is the greatest college qb of the last 20 years. They are irrelevant.

If you can do math and use a calculator... then check out www.cfbstats.com. Most of the specific info I use comes from there.

Based on what has been said the coaches really like the top three qbs. They really like Maurer. Shrout has a long way to go to. Accuracy and taking care of the ball do translate. In fact Shrout has been having issues with them in practice. Its not a coincidence.

I didn't say Shrout was competing for the start this year. The only way he starts imo is if the top 2 get hurt and McBride is ineffective or gets hurt too. Why are you so OCD about denying the simple fact that the coaches are excited about someone other than JG?

IMHO, it is a straight forward competition and both guys were told what they had to improve on to earn the job. It sounds like JG has made progress but this podcast indicates that he got chewed on during the scrimmage and didn't respond well. That's a double whammy.

What that DOES NOT MEAN is that it is a problem overall. We just don't know. It also doesn't mean that Chryst has overcome his issues... and he has some significant ones.

As for Chryst "being the guy"... he was for the better part of two years after taking the job from the previous QB. Stanford was 6-2 when he was benched and went 3-3 from there on out. Costello's numbers were a little better but not much. Shaw to his credit stuck with KC through some less than stellar games then stuck with Costello through tough times too. Costello being younger in this case was the better investment all other things being equal.

He did lose his job but it wasn't quite as clean cut as you might think. Stanford is a heavily run first team.
This doesn't pertain to your post, but I just want to throw in one last thing. Everybody take what you may have heard Vol Colonel say in the podcast with a grain of salt. Like, a really really small grain of salt. I didn't listen to it, but based on the comments I'm seeing on the board, it sounds like he threw some bs out there per his usual.

Yes. As we should with anyone else who comments right now... including Swain and others who have said JG is great and running away with the competition. What is directly observed isn't much. The rest is just rumors and second hand info. However with the specific claim that JG was chewed out for holding the ball... that rings true since we know it has been a problem AND because Pruitt specifically mentioned it in his press conference concerning the scrimmage.
